”Floating World” kimono sculptures (Odoriko, Young Bijin and Chado), by Karen Lamonte

(From her official bio) In 2006, Karen Lamonte was awarded a seven month Creative Artists Exchange Fellowship […] during which she studied the kimono as an investigation into the Japanese use of clothing as social language.

The inquiry into beauty as seen through a different cultural lens lead to a body of work called Floating World.  Inspired by the lexicon of the kimono, the [life sized] sculptures in rusted metal, bronze, ceramic and cast glass and have been extensively acquired by museums for their permanent collections.
