Terms You Might Want To Know For Your Wuxia/Xianxia Fic

MXTX's danmei are getting increasingly popular, and the fandoms are getting more fic-happy. I've noticed that some writers seem interested in writing their own fics but are concerned of making mistakes with niche honorifics and titles. I've noticed some that have jumped right in, but have made innocent errors that I'd like to correct but fear coming off as rude or presumptuous. And so I've made this list of terms that covers the basics and also some that are a little more niche since they're usually directly translated in cnovels.

DISCLAIMER: This is by no means a comprehensive list of everything one needs to know or would want to know concerning ancient Chinese honorifics and titles, merely what I myself consider useful to keep in mind.

Titles

Shifu: 'Martial father'; gender-neutral

Shizun: 'Martial father'; more formal than 'shifu'; gender-neutral

Shimu: ‘Martial mother’; wife of your martial teacher

Shiniang: ‘Martial mother’; wife of your martial teacher who is also a martial teacher

Shibo: elder apprentice-brother of your shifu; gender-neutral

Shishu: younger apprentice-brother of your shifu; gender-neutral

Shigu: apprentice-sister of your shifu

Shizhi: your martial nephew/niece

Shimei: younger female apprentice of the same generation as you

Shijie: elder female apprentice of the same generation as you

Shidi: younger male apprentice of the same generation as you

Shixiong: elder male apprentice of the same generation as you

Shige: elder male apprentice of the same generation as you, specifically one who has the same shifu as you or is the son of your shifu

Zhanglao: an elder of your sect

Zhangbei: a senior of your sect

Qianbei: a senior not of your sect

Wanbei: a junior not of your sect

Zongzhu: Address for a clan leader

Zhangmen: address for a sect leader

Daozhang: Daoist priests or simply a cultivator in general; gender-neutral

Daogu: Daoist priestess or a female cultivator; not as commonly used as 'daozhang'

Xiangu: Daoist priestess or a female cultivator; not as commonly used as 'daogu'

Sanren: a wandering cultivator

Xianren: 'Immortal Official'; a title of respect and power like 'General'

Xiuzhe: 'Cultivator', can be shortened to 'Xiu'

Xianjun: 'Immortal Master/Lord'

Xianshi: 'Immortal Master/Teacher'

Dashi: 'Great Teacher', address for monks

Xiansheng: Teacher/Sir; in ancient China, the connotation is very scholastic

Houye: address for a duke

Jueye: address for a noble lord, ei. a duke, marquess, earl, etc.

Wangye: address for king/imperial prince

Daren: address for imperial officials

Furen: Madam; the wife of an imperial official/nobleman OR a married woman granted a rank by the royal family

Nushi: Madam; the counterpart of 'xiansheng', connotation is scholastic

Taitai: Madam; address for an old married woman of the gentry, either wife or mother to head of household

Laoye: Old Lord; Address for an adult man with adult children of the gentry; possibly head of household

Nainai: Madam; Address for a married woman of the gentry, possibly wife of head of household

Ye: Lord; address for an adult man of the gentry, possibly head of household

Shaonainai: Young Madam; address for a woman married to a young man of the gentry

Shaoye: Young Lord; address for a young man or boy of the gentry, generation lower than head of household

Xiaoye: Little Lord; can be a synonym for ‘shaoye’ OR the son of a shaoye if ‘shaoye’ is already being used within the family

Xiaojie: Young Mistress; address for an unmarried woman or young girl of . . . the gentry and only the gentry, I believe. Correct me if you know for certain this is incorrect. (WARNING - It's an archaic term that should really only be used in an archaic setting if being used as a title instead of a suffix, because the modern vernacular has it as a term for a prostitute in mainland China. [Surname]-xiaojie is fine; Xiaojie by itself should be avoided.)

Gongzi: ‘Young Master/Lord/Sir'; ‘Childe’; young man from a household of the noble or gentry class

Guniang: 'Young Master/Lady/Miss'; ‘Maiden’; an unmarried woman or young girl from a household of the noble or gentry class

Laozhang: 'Old battle'; polite address for an unrelated old man of lower status than you

Laobo: polite address for an unrelated old man of a higher status that you

Laotou: 'Old man'; informal but not derogatory, implies fondness/closeness

Laopopo: 'Old woman'; informal but not derogatory, implies fondness/closeness

Please note that all of these listed above can be used as stand-alone titles or as suffixed honorifics.

Strictly Prefix/Suffix

-shi: 'Clan'; the suffix for a married woman, essentially means 'née'. (ex. Say Wei Wuxian was a woman and married into the Lan clan through a standard marriage. She would be called 'Wei-shi' by her husband's contemporaries and elders when not in a formal setting. It implies lack of closeness; used by acquaintances.)

a-: A prefix that shows affection or intimacy.

-er: A suffix that shows affection or intimacy; typically for children or those younger than you

-jun: 'Nobleman'; a suffix for a greatly respected man

-zun: 'Revered One'; a suffix for a greatly respected man

-ji: A suffix for a female friend

-bo: A suffix for an older man of your grandparents' generation

-po: A suffix for an older woman of your grandparents' generation

One thing that often happens is people get very confused about what is wuxia, xianxia, and xuanhuan due to lack of understanding about the terms. So I made this venn diagram to help. 😂

my vision for DVAWTK modern AU is as follows: Baili Qingmiao comes over to Wenren È's house because he told her she's his goddaughter and she believes him completely and she needs a ride to the mall, and he’s sitting in a pool chair drinking wine in the middle of the day and watching his…subordinate? chauffeur?? bodyguard??? um, Yin Hanjiang, that guy he brings everywhere with him, do laps in the pool. both of them have absolutely no expression on their faces.

Crossover Crackship Shu Yanyan x Liu Qingge

Hear me out:

LQG goes out on a mission and SYY is nearby.

SYY immediately starts trying to seduce him because he is a pretty powerful cultivator and he gives off dumb jock energy.

Only problem: LQG is a feral raccoon of a man who has no social awareness because his sister took it all

SYY *Accidentally trips into LQG's arms*: Oh no~ I think I've broken my ankle! Could this big strong cultivator ca-

LQG *immediately puts her down*: Here *hands her a roll of bandages* Wrap it with this, my sister told me not to because I don't know how to regulate my strength.

SYY: Ah...

This comedy of errors goes on for a while. SYY is desperately trying to seduce him not because she even really wants to, she just refuses to admit defeat. LQG is confused on why SYY is still here, but she is very resourceful when she's not purposefully being dumb for no reason.

SYY: Do you like men?

LQG: *vivid SY flashbacks*

SYY mind: ...Is that a yes or no?

The mission wraps up and SYY is kind of sad to leave, partly because she didn't manage to seduce LQG and also because it was actually kind of fun.

Before they part ways, a giant monster comes out, and SYY ends up being the one to defeat it.

SYY is panicking because LQG probably figured out who she is and LQG is panicking because SYY looks radiant covered in monster guts and blood.

Now there are two ways that this could go that I've thought of

1. LQG just asks if SYY wants to go hunting with him and they end up partnering up together whenever LQG leaves by himself. Somewhere along the way LQG finds out SYY's identity and doesn't care. SYY still does make passes at him, but she does so half-heartedly and they end up dancing around eachother until LQG gets hit with a wifeplot and SYY has to save him. This ends in a beautiful cumulation of pent of sexual tension and yearning in which they get together. LBH is happy because that means he can keep SY to himself. No Shizun, he didn't deliberately set this up with help from LMY because she was tired of the pining and would let him help write the sequel to Regret of Chunshan.

2. They get dosed with an aphrodisiac and do it. SYY immediately leaves next thing and tries to forget about it. However LQG tracks her down and basically asks to marry her, since they've slept together. SYY says no but LQG is horrified at the thought of not taking responsibility and SYY eventually compromises with a courtship. It ends up being the weirdest thing to ever grace the earth. LMY was orginally on the fence but ended up being really passionate about it (Thankfully for LQG not BingYuan passionate, he would never be able to look at her again). WE is genuinely the last person to know about this, YHJ figured it out but didn't say anything because then it would be forbidden and SYY would immediately start trying to go after WE again.

LQG would just look at WE and ask if YHJ's his wife (LBH calls SY that and WE looks at YHJ how LBH looks at SY so he thought they were also together). WE would just stare at him while realizing his feelings. WE and YHJ end up together and because LQG helped, WE doesn't forbid his and SYY's relationship.

LQG doesn't want to ascend with the other peak lords and instead wants to wait for SYY and SY doesn't want to ascend and leave LBH, same for SQH and YQY (TianYue agenda strikes again) the peak lords end up just leaving the peaks to their successors and just going rogue and trying to get to heaven by themselves or staying with their demon spouses.

The great war rolls around, SYY and LQG are flirting/fighting and both sides are watching in horror and/or treating it like entertainment. YHJ and WE are treating it like a date, the monks were not prepared to be made into oil lamps for the sake of romance. Also the instant SYY seems to be in trouble, LQG switches sides.

Also MQF basically happened upon BQM and took her as his disciple.

SYY still has her harem because LQG understands her cultivation path and knows that he won't be much help with that (I HC him as ace-spec). He isn't jealous because he knows that SYY loves him and only cares about her harem just for cultivation purposes.

They do end up ascending together and are known as the Love & War gods. YHJ & WE also ascended together and are known as the Fiery War gods.

Also this isn't really connected but I picture YQY just having small shrines dedicated to each of his martial siblings that have ascended.

LMY would initially be on guard but her and SYY would be the best sisters in law.

Wuyong Trio

TGCF x DVAWTK crossover where Wenren E was from Wuyong. He basically grows up with Jun Wu and Mei Nianqing. Tragic backstory stuff happens and he basically leaves. Wuyong falls and he doesn't end up realizing for a while and when he does just feels so guilty. Also I'm pretty sure it's canon that WE was declared legally dead so just imagine the angst with JW & MNQ being heartbroken about WE's "death." And then it being reversed with WE thinking that JW & MNQ are dead after the fall of Wuyong.

Once WE, along with YHJ, reaches godhood he basically just does the spiderman pointing meme with JW. He is also so confused on what the hell happened to JW. To make things funnier, I picture JW and YHJ having this insane rivalry over WE (I'm not shipping JW and WE but I'm also not not shipping them).

Xie Lian's fate would be different because WE just basically adopts him (along with Feng Xin) and JW doesn't want to alienate someone else he was close to. YHJ ends up basically adopting HC and MQ.

MNQ ends up being dragged up to heaven by WE because he was so tired of witnessing JW's pining.

Once [name] was dropped off at the manor she was greeted with an hidden annoyed expression by the man Bruce Wayne. Her father.

She hated that expression.

The one that she would get from the people in the clan when they passed by her.

She had Mai her sister to help her be brave.

But she isn’t here with her.

[name] was scared and sad that her own father didn’t even care for her. Just what kind of man was he? All those news reports and stories about him being a good man to his children were all a lie?! No, [name] didn’t like this at all. This isn’t fair.

“I’m sorry for the lost of your mother.” Bruce said briefly and quickly dismissed her with Alfred.

Her mother died long ago and that’s the only thing you can say to her when you’re first meeting your daughter?

“Then you’ll be fine handling it. I have to go. When I come back we can go to the arcade.” Dick offered a smile and [name] returned it but it soon dropped when he left.

‘At least we’ll go to the arcade later..’

[name] had treated her head due to already having experience when living with the clan. She waited and participated to go with dick to the whole night just to be disappointed when he didn’t came.

‘He probably forgot…maybe next time.’

but there was never a next time.

[name] was bored on day 3 of being in the manor and had always asked Alfred if she could talk to her father but he always said he was busy.

“Papa is busy again…what do I do..” [name] talked to herself and she had stumbled in the library and looked at all the books.

As she walked looking at all the books she had bumped into someone and they grunted that they dropped their book and looked to see who it was.

“oh.” [name] looks down sadly.

He scoffs “Another one of Bruce’s adopted mistakes?”

How could her bother (she thinks) say something so rude. He then crouched to her height.

“I-I’m his kid! I promise..a-and your my brother right?”

He raised a brow then smirked “look kid.” He put a hand on her shoulder and squeezed it till it hurt.

“You’re just one of Bruce little distractions for a while and then he’ll forget about you and everything you like. Don’t think you’re special. And I’m not your brother.” He then pushes her aside and she hits the bookshelf.

He walks away.

Because she had hit the bookshelf a book had fell on her head cause of the push and her head injury began to blood again.

“Ow it hurts…it hurts so much. How can he say that?”

[name] cried silently but it was never heard by anyone.

A week passes since she been in the manor and she hadn’t been able to hang out of dick or her dad. She was able to find out who that guy was in the library after overseeing him and dick talk which she learned his name was Jason.

When [name] sees them talking she smiled softly ‘two of my brothers! We can maybe hang out.’

[name] went down the stairs and walked to them and as her footsteps were heard their conversation stopped and they looked at her. One had a obvious annoyed expression and the other had a forced smile.

”Um I’m [name] I never uh got to tell you guys my name”

“because we don’t ca-“ Dick had stepped on his foot to make him shut up.

“Oh! That’s a uh..unique name.. well his name is-“

[name] interrupted him excitedly “It’s ok! I already know! You’re dick and that’s Jason!”

“oh..um don’t call me dick. It’s Richard.”

But that’s what everyone calls you? Why can’t She call you dick?

“oh. Sorry.” [name] smile disappeared. “What’s do you want?” Jason had said with his arms crossed. And [name] looks down “oh I was wondering um if we could all go to the arcade-“

“About that, sorry me and jay here have something planned already sorry.”

[name] walked upstairs sadly and she stumbled a room that was slightly ajar and she looks through the crack and sees a person sitting on a chair looking at a computer.

‘We can probably hang out!’

She walks in the room and the door cracks from the movement of being open and her steps made noises on the floorboards causing the person to turn their chair.

“Who are you.” The person had said with a tired expression.

“I’m [name] it’s nice to meet you. I was just wondering if we can hang out-“

“No, get out I have stuff to do and you’re ruining it.”

“Oh sorry.”

He turns back around to continue what he was doing and [name] had left closing his door and she frowns

‘Everybody is busy..but that’s ok maybe later we can hang out…’

As [name] had walked away to go to her room she had seen Alfred make way to the same room from before and she hears Alfred say their name.

Tim.

….

Week and a half passed since she stayed in the manor and she had met Cassandra and Stephanie. Cassandra didn’t really care to talk to her much but she did interact with her but only to ask about where someone was. Stephanie on the other hand would actually go out her way to talk to [name]. But only for a little while and leave. But at least [name] had someone to talk to when she needed help on something but she would be interpreted most of the time by Cassandra or Tim. But if not she would sometimes cut off their conversation saying that she remembers had to do something and would leave. After the new week had passed Stephanie had lost interest and only talked to [name] when she sees her to say hello and that’s it.

The family in general didn’t talk to her that much. Always finding a reason to not talk or just not wanting to interact in general. When [name] would catch any of them talking to another they would suddenly get quiet or lower their conversation when they see her.

One day she had caught on their conversations and she found out her father Bruce was Batman!

[name] was walking to the kitchen silently and saw nightwing and Batman arguing and nightwing had took off his eye mask thing and she sees it was Richard! Shocked she also sees Batman take off his mask and it was her dad Bruce!

That means her other siblings are vigilantes!

[name] not thinking had went to them smiling “I didn’t know you guys were cool heroes! That means I can finally be a hero right?” Bruce had turn to her and looked at her with a stern expression making her even more scared of his already scary expression. She quickly realized she wasn’t supposed to be here so we ran back upstairs looking down sadly.

As she walked upstairs she didn’t see Tim had coffee in his hand walking to the stairs too so when she had looked up her head had hit his hand and the coffee fell out his hand and he tsked annoyed.

“god…”

“sorry! I didn’t mean to-“

“Shut up! Just shut up ok?! You always bother me trying to ask dumb question and it’s annoying! You’re so damn annoying! Why can’t you just go back where you came from?!” Tim yelled finally losing it due to being up late all the time solving a case.

“I-I’m sorry I’ll make you a new one-“ [name] desperately try make this argument go away “no just move!” He pushed [name] out the way. She was on top of the stairs so once he had pushed her she went tumbling down.

‘Ow ow it hurts it hurt it hurts it hurts’ Her left arm twisted in the way it shouldn’t. And once was near the end of the stairs a nail lose from the wall of the stairs had shook from her sudden weight. It flew off the wall and as soon as she was about to reach the end of the stairs the nail had pierced her eye.

[name] screamed in pain as her eye bleeds out.

The noise had caught Bruce and Dick’s attention and they went to where the noise was coming from and seen her at the bottom of the stairs and Dick quickly checked her injuries and Bruce had looked up seen no one on top of the stairs.

“What happened? Are you ok?” Dick asked crouched to where she laid at just and Bruce just stared as he stood with a his usual scary expression.

[name] couldn’t form any words as she cried.

“She fell.” Cassandra says walking out from the shadows where she had witnessed the scene.

“I was passing by and seen her slipped” She said with her arms crossed.

[name] couldn’t say anything to say it was Tim because she was in so much pain as she gripped her bleeding eye.

‘What? The time you want to speak on anything that involves me you want to lie about me felling when Timothy pushed me…that isn’t fair. No that isn’t fair at all..how could you? I thought we were sisters..’

Bruce sighed now he has to treat this girl because she slipped.

“Can you be more careful next time? There isn’t any need to be an inconvenience for everyone.” Bruce deep voice stated with a hint of annoyance. [name] cries went more quiet as her not injured eye widen and stared at her dad Bruce.

‘How could you say that…’

After that incident her arm was now in a cast and her eye had cohesive bandage around it which was also around her head.

[name] had stayed in her room for a whole month after that incident. Alfred had always went to check up on her and made sure she had breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Alfred worried that she would lose hope on being apart the family so he would always give her encouraging words or tell her stories about them and or how they were younger since she already knows the family’s alter egos. [name] would always smile to not have the English butler worry too much but she has already given up on try.

<Years later>

[Name] was now 14 and she still had been neglected and now they didn’t even give her good excuses on why they don’t want to talk to her.

But [name] was fine with the silence. She had Alfred.

Once day a new person would be introduced to the manor.

Damian Wayne

Once [name] found out he was half little brother she was happy but also sad because he will be met with the same neglect, but at least they’ll have each other! After all they were real siblings! It will be just like when she was with Mai!

“I’ll be the best older sister again”

Oh, you were SO wrong.

Damian was and had everything you wanted from the family, Warmth. Care. Love. It wasn’t fair. It wasn’t fair at all. He was so lucky that you wanted to throw up and shout from how he did nothing and was able to fit in, but it didn’t matter because he was YOUR little brother, YOUR real sibling. So you tried to bond with him.

Now you were clenching your already partially blind eye as it was now bleeding from the sword that slashed down at it that Damian was holding.

“What’s wrong with you?!” [name] said angrily.

“I’m only teaching you a lesson. You’re a disgrace to the Wayne bloodline. The best thing you could do for my family is to kill yourself. Damian said putting his sword away and once he had turn his back to walk away [name] had rushed at him, and grabbed his hair and slammed his face into the wall. He grunted holding his bleeding nose and he turned to [name] with a glare.

“Do you want to die, you disgrace?!” Damian said getting ready to pounce on her. “I’ll like to see you try, you little shit” [name] got in stance from when she was trained those years back, but she was a little rusty.

Damian pounced on her and tried to pull the little bastard off her as he pulled on her hair and his other hand trying to punch her. From the sudden weight [name] was moving backwards.

“Get off me you little fucker!” [name] said slamming his back against the wall. Damian yelped in pain, and had let go of her. He laid on the ground about to get up until multiple footsteps were rushing upstairs. The family had heard the commotion and see [name] with one of her closed eye bleeding with a long cut, but Damian had a bloody nose while on the floor with [name] standing over him.

Damian who sees this as a opportunity to get [name] in trouble he rubs on of his eyes and makes a sniffing noise to seem like he was crying. Just when [name] was about to say anything, or before anyone got to do anything Alfred had walked up to name.

A loud SMACK sound was heard and her face moved to the side from the slap.

‘You’ll have to forgive me master. But he’s just a child. I’m sorry. You’ll have to please forgive me’ Alfred had said in his head as now the attention was now on Damian. They comforted him even though he was the one who started this mess.

[name] stood in shocked from the slap from Alfred that she didn’t notice Bruce had walked up to her.

”Why would you do this [Name] ? You know he has a rough childhood so would you attack him? I had expected you would do better and ignore any of his rude comments. I’m disappointed in you. I want you to stay away from him from now on.”

[name] didn’t have a single word on what to say because she was sure they wouldn’t believe or want to hear what she will have to say. So she walked past them to go to her room, as she walked to her room she could feel their hatred in their eyes burn in her back, and Damian’s cocky smirk.

The incident was forgotten. Well the scar that happened to [name] had been forgotten, not the nose bleed she gave Damian. Every family move night, event, day they’ll give her more of a cold shoulder or glare (Jason and Tim).

You’d think [name] would have Alfred? But no. After that incident she didn’t really want anything to do with him. She thinks that he’s just like the rest of the family. But he’s not he swears! He still tries to talk or make her happy even though [name] shows no interest on wanting to interact with him.

But it soon changed when she was walking home from school after track practice.

“Yo! [name] Wayne right?” Someone asked from behind her and she turned already about to blow off on this person.

“Nice to meet ya’! I’m now your sensei!”
