I know this is a roundabout way of calling me an uncaring cunt (guilty).

That being said, empathy is not exactly the most desirable trait if you work in healthcare. A bit of empathy is very good because it can help you understand your patients better. But you are constantly watching people have the worst day of their life and then sticking needles and catheters in them. You watch people die with their loved ones grieving next to them. Sometimes you have to make split decisions that have life changing effects and then be able to leave with those decisions afterwards. This is a really hard environment to work in if you’re very empathetic.

I think anyone working in medicine should be compassionate, instead! This is a skill that can be practiced too. They ought to be kind and comforting to their patients and their families. But they should also be able to clock out and not think of them again until their next shift.
