We arrived early to class to work on some finishing touches, like sound! We were trying to render during the first presentation... Luckily it finished on time before ours!

Immaculate Selections by Adam Kennedy (2013)
The cube was animated in After Effects! That’s pretty impressive. The music choice is pretty good. I like how it’s rendered...

Sandy and I are working on sound for our parts. We ended up liking the sounds we found, so we saved them and gave them to the rest of the group.

Voces, en Tiempo Mí by Juan Manuel Pedraza
Very ambitious. I can tell he’s passionate about his work. Nice singing too.

Working on editing something of mine to use for Angie’s part. I realized that I’m really starting to get comfortable with AfterEffects..

Magik Cube by Mao Ramirez (2013)
Very interesting! Short, simple, but very energetic. I like the rendering of the 3D. :)

Me and Sandy were putting our parts of the film together. We were working in AfterEffects and experimenting with the different effects! It was a refresher for me, working with the keyframes and stuff (because it’s been so long). I love how her part came out! Adding a different layer mode really helped to give the banana some emotion.

Poster Project by Jodie Mack (2013)
This is one of the most experimental stuff I’ve ever seen in a while. LOL I like the beginning, really freaked me out. But very experimental indeed..

The week after spring break.. So we recorded a background for my part of the film. It’s the sky, since I’m animating a bird! Still gotta work on sound and editing the background in AfterEffects.

Boogie Doodle by Norman McLaren (1941)
This reminds me of the funny film about the dot and the line..

Week 10. So far, this is my part of our final. I had Angie, who started off as a banana, morph into a bird. She then goes into another portal that opens up on the bottom right. We’re thinking about how to do the background!

Week 9. Today we came up with ideas for our final film. It was pretty fun working with everyone! Though I had to leave the table for a while because some of the reference videos we saw were pretty disturbing.

Set in Motion by Jane Aaron (1987)
This one deals with visual music, and papers glide across actual objects. I like this one because it feels very surreal, but in a positive way. Usual surreal stuff makes me feel scared, but this one evokes happiness. It could be music choice? Very hypnotic.
Her work featured in children’s shows and taught children the alphabet, etc… I might’ve seen her work when I was younger!

Week 8. This is my part of the animation video! I messed around in Photoshop and AfterEffects.
RESEARCH:
https://vimeo.com/197134336 Scratch and Crow (1995) by Helen Hill
It’s interesting because it’s very abstract, yet the subject matter is… not so abstract. But because the subject matter is concrete, it made we watch this expecting logical things to happen, but then the weird stuff like watermelons raining from the sky took me off guard.

Week 7... We finished our film! We dulled the colors on some of the clips so that they could fit with the rest of the film. It took a really long time to put this together... I like it! I’d like to thank my teammates for being there and helping to composite, and being the masters of sound!

Miwa Matreyek has a background in animation and used herself as a shadow puppet. I just love her technique!

Week 6... Today, we split up our team into 2 stations. I worked with another teammate on silhouettes. We got some beautiful construction paper and cut out some shapes, and then animated it on a light table.
There was some weird yellow color in the background that wouldn’t stay still. So we keyed out the yellow in AfterEffects, and it ended up looking like this. We kinda like the look though, so we’re gonna keep it. We’ll try to find a way to make the other clips in the film look consistent with this one.
The entity doesn’t have a motive or objective... it’s a loose cannon and all over the place. Unstable and doesn’t know what it wants.
RESEARCH:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3-vsKwQ0Cg Dots (1940) by Norman McLaren
Now here’s a simple one... Ah, good old animation before it had to become all super and complex. Sometimes we forget that simplicity is better.

Week 5... Today, we were animating with baking soda! While doing so, we came up with a more concrete idea for our Entity project:
Since an entity is a “being,” we want to focus on the formation and deconstruction of an object, or that “being.” So we plan to build a lot of things and reverse the process in AfterEffects.
I really feel like we could do way better if we have about 1 more week, but with the limited time we have, we’re coming out pretty nicely so far. We came up with lots of good ideas that we never had before. But we’ll also have to find time for sound.
RESEARCH:
https://vimeo.com/1722567 Unsubscribe #3: Glitch Envy (2010) by Jodie Mack
It’s strange but hypnotizing in a way... The sound is very experimental as well, and it’s important in this film because the contents on the screen build up with it.

So I composited all the animations we made last week and put them into 1 video. It’s pretty... interesting?? I had fun keying the oil painting part in the beginning. I put different color solids under the video layer so that it looks like the paint is changing colors. I wanted smooth transitions, so I decided to begin the shadow puppet animation a little before the oil painting one ended. I put the pixelation one at the end.
It turned out to be kinda surprising! Because the beginning of the video seems kinda mesmerizing, and then the pixelation takes you off guard.

This film shows how powerful sound can be. I don’t think it has a narrative, but I love how the camera shakes towards the end. It really adds drama.

Some more AfterEffects keying and masking practice. I also fixed the dimensions and frame rate of these videos. For this one, I put a cave background so that it looks like a spooky head ghost floating around in the dark.

We were doing some keying lessons in AfterEffects today. Now I understanding keying more. I really liked keying this one! I put a purple background to make it look spooky. Thought it’d go well with all the noise in the video.

Another one of my favorites. Shadow animation looked really cool and it really just gave that whole “experimental” animation vibe... Maybe we can incorporate it into our “Entity” project?

This was a story we made using the cut-and-paste storytelling technique... It was one of my favorite activities, we laughed a lot. :)
