Starry
.... so to be honest I couldn’t hear ANYTHING. Like the audio and echo was particularly bad during this lecture.
I did a little digging online tho, and it sounds like a great service. I’m happy to see someone tackling the problem of internet infrastructure through the use of design. With technology moving so fast, it seems so archaic to have to dig underground to replace old cables every time theres a newer faster service. This old system inherently divides the rich communities who can support these changes financially and the poorer communities who can’t prioritize this change. Which is why I was really interested in the use of millimeter waves to access our internet instead of the typical use of a broadband connection. What I wish I had understood better is how they can offer a fixed low rate if this is a newer technology.
Thats where the internet comes in ( thank you google)
From what I was able to understand, Starry uses a similar technology as wifi to capture internet data, (over the air). The millimeter wave spectrum they are currently testing is free which makes sense cost wise. The unfortunate result of this is that the waves are much more short range, and require the use of a powerful antenna to receive the data into our homes.
Im excited to see what comes from this, the router is super nice looking and I like how they’ve incorporated visual data about your internet consumption into the the touch screen and made it super user friendly. What I am less excited about is the 2 part antenna that is required to collect the data and which goes straight out your window in oder for the router to catch the signal.

Big I Design

We got cool fun pocket tools from Chad Parker for FREE!!!! ... the perks of having an in person speakers.
Another perk, is all the time he was able to spend with us. We got some really good insights on how to manage multiple projects at once and how to effectively use Kickstarter as a platform to understand what the market is looking to buy.
So what happens when a project fails? you learn from what didn’t work, and try something else!
Thank you Chad!

“tune into what your customer is interested in”
Lisa Smith, Chief Design officer of Areaware skype called us “today” heres some insights into retail/wholesale.

- Areaware is like a record label or a publisher
- designers get royalties for their designs
- fulfilment vs wholesale
fulmilment: more expensive, new model, pays for itself
wholesale : varies , keeps mobility down
- can secure volume with manufacturing by asking for volume pricing.
A few tips designers may not want to hear:
- will make more money if they follow a format “that sells” (prescribed standards)
- Know your market, buyers don’t care about the design story only about “best sellers”
Thank you so much for these insights Lisa!

LOVELY LUMI
We completely forgot to share with Stephan that we are big fans of his product!!! thank you @arielllynne for the tip to check out Lumi.
I for one LOVE my Lumi stamp! I have so much fun stamping doodles and best of all people love it too!

Best marketing purchase I made by far, I also received my stamp literally the same day as launch which i was not expecting at all since i had barely ordered it 2 days before. Cheers to the great service Lumi provides!
ok so Stephan...
Stephan Ango, co-founder of Lumi was kind enough to share his insights on design with us this “week” lol. What really stuck out to me was that Lumi is really a logistics enterprise and that he solved the big problems he faced using the tools he learned in design.
WOW!!!! He was able to benefit from the process of design thinking and apply it to logistics something totally different then a physical product and it actually freaking worked, it is profitable and it creates a great service that people enjoy. I thought that was all very satisfying.
I don’t technically consider myself an industrial designer because my technical skills are so underdeveloped ( sketching and rendering meh!!) but I love what design thinking has to offer. I love valuing the needs of humans above the needs of profit, and I really think the world can benefit from using design to solve a lot of the problems it faces today.
This conversation hit me way closer to the heart then I expected.
Thank you Stephan!

When I heard Chicago Design Museum was inside block 37 I was a little confused. However after meeting with Tanner Woodford I understood it is all part of a bigger plan to bring design to people in the most unexpected ways. Chicago Design Museum is “ Youthful. Adaptable. Collaborative.” so why not put it inside a shopping mall?

The museum’s mission is to "strengthen design culture and build community by facilitating the exchange of knowledge through dynamic experiences” They realized that Chicago was a great place to foster the community they needed to support a project like this.
Things I really liked about the space was:
- Their rotating seasons, they close between exhibitions to facilitate the installation of the next exhibit but this means every new opening is an exciting and welcoming opportunity to come back to the museum and see how they've managed to change the space.
- Their consignment/retail shop. I thought it was super cool to see the work of designers showcased in this space.
