SOMEHOW THEY SURVIVED THE CONVERSATION & BUCKY FEELS AS IF HE CAN BREATHE AGAIN. He realizes now he'd been unfair in thinking Tony would just up and leave and pretend this had never happened. He'd stayed , he'd had the uncomfortable conversation. Suddenly, he snorts and rolls his eyes. Yeah , life is resuming and he likes that. "You realize i was trying not to break you? remember what i did to your car door once? super soldier strength. Neither of us would have had a good time if i'd shattered one of your bones." THERE IT IS ; NORMALITY , playfulness. Stark and his snark. Maybe , just maybe , they'd be okay.

There's a quiet peace that settles within him. As uncomfortable as this conversation was, Tony also understands Bucky better now, and for that, he's grateful.

Somehow, it makes this all feel that much more real and a little more possible. He has a lot to figure out on his end; Bucky does too. But if they can chip away at this piece by piece, who knows what they'll find underneath the rubble.

With that, Tony's brain is finally able to return to where this all started.

"You know, I'm far less sore than I expected to be after a night with you." He smirks and slices off a bite of pancake. "Next time, you're gonna have to try a little harder."

Clicking his tongue, he rakes his teeth over the fork and resumes life as it was. It's meant for the living, after all. The dead will have to wait.

IT'S COMPLICATED & WEIRD AND BUCKY KNOWS IT'S NOT GOING TO BE PERFECT ; there's too much history and bad blood. Howard aside , Bucky had also been responsible for the murder of Tony's mother and that wasn't going to go away. Bucky knows that. It's something they're trying to navigate but it hasn't been easy and the soldier does not expect nor does he feel he will ever deserve , forgiveness in that regard. SOMEHOW THEY'VE COME TOGETHER. Whether out of loneliness , or because they shared a trauma. Bucky can't be sure , but those nights where they watch movies and bicker , eat good food - they've come to mean a lot to him and he hopes , maybe , that Tony feels the same way. At his words , he nods. Not walking away. That's reassurance Bucky hadn't realized he needed until now. Maybe because he'd become so accustomed to people leaving. "Yeah , i get it." Hell , he'd be okay even if last night didn't happen again. If Tony just wanted to go back to casual friendship , with an added side of movies , Bucky would accept that. He'd understand. "Take all the time you need."

'Hanging out with you', Tony expects. 'Waking up next to you', he doesn't.

So, maybe he hasn't just been making up this thing between them, and Tony isn't entirely sure if his attraction to Bucky is just a new brand of self-loathing or what else might be going on here. His suspicions tell him it's something more, but sometimes it's easier to just pretend it's...not.

But unlike Bucky, Tony doesn't have a therapist to block, but maybe it's time he finally gets one...a real one. Maybe a real one for Bucky, too.

"I'm not walkin' away, no." He shakes his head. "Believe it or not, but I enjoy your company, and you actually don't hate all my movie recommendations, which apparently counts for quite a bit in my book."

With a deep sigh, Tony leans back in his chair. He taps his index finger on the table in a moment's thought before his gaze seeks Bucky's. They haven't figured everything out; they likely never would, but this conversation has gone markedly better than he expected.

"If we're going to continue our new, uh, extracurriculars, though," he clears his throat, "there's one person I gotta talk to first. You good putting a pause on anything too physical until I get somethin' sorted out?"

Tony could live with not making peace with himself over this. The person he couldn't, however, was his mother.
