Hell hath no fury like a wet Paris-Roubaix. This is from the 1965 race, and belies a misconception that the race lost its worst cobbled sections during that decade. True, tarmac did replace pavé in many town centres, as well as on some of the main roads, but stretches like this existed in the countryside and were never ripped up.
In fact the man responsible for the Tranche d’Arenberg being in the race, 1962 world champion Jean Stablinski, told me that there were many stretches of pavé worse than Arenberg in the same area. Only he didn’t dare tell the organisers because of his consideration for the riders.
