Americans really will always blame their own racism on Russia somehow.

1. i reblogged your post specifically because i love your blog and your writing so i felt less bad reblogging a russian propaganda video to criticise it by at least also reposting a blog that i like

2. some americans can be really racist, but also it can be true at the same time that russia can have caused this particular perception problem themselves. russia has absolutely no qualm turning around calling people russian left and right when it suits their interests.

3. it’s true that russian controlled territory has hundreds of ethnic groups to the east, but hmm i wonder why it’s so diverse? oh, right, it’s because imperial russia marched east, brutally conquered these peoples (often facing intense resistance), then decreed “ok you guys are russian now” and went to work on systematically erasing their cultures. it’s russia and russian media that constantly pushes the idea that all these places are russian because it’s convenient for them— this is first and foremost where westerners get the idea that russia has one monolithic identity. world’s tiniest violin.

4. they constantly do this. they’ve been doing this for hundreds of years, across whatever regime happens to be in power at any given moment. this tiktokker certainly knows that but doesn’t say shit about it because she’d rather make videos for english speakers about how culturally diverse and great russia is. She can conveniently sling mud at the west and imply the problem is that, actually, it’s us westerners who are the real racists who are just so blind and refuse to understand their culture. this content is literally designed to sow division among the west by planting the seeds of doubt among westerners who (rightfully) value and appreciate cultural diversity.

5. they are bombing my family right now. sorry, i don’t have much sympathy for some russian mouthpiece tiktokker trying to appropriate the language of acceptance and antiracism to imply that russia is some kind of cultural melting pot that we westerners are just simply too racist to understand. no, im not buying that framing. the biggest reason why westerners have trouble distinguishing these cultural groups is because the thugs of st petersburg and moscow have been marauding, repressing, and forcibly assimilating their neighbours for centuries and they are literally still doing it to this day while the west clutches its collective pearls.

that said, i know things are really hard right now. it’s easy to be depressive at the state of things and shit on your fellow citizen because it feels like everyone globally just wants to be stupid, ignorant, and stick their head in the sand to all our problems. but all the isolation and polarisation is exactly what russian media wants. the more we fight amongst ourselves, the easier it is for them to drag us back to the dark ages.

so even though i have been being so negative i wanted to at least end my reply to you with something positive and say thanks for caring about stuff. not just like, this particular topic or anything, but in general.

i think a lot to myself about one story you wrote where there’s an ancient android who was built as a weapon to fight a long forgotten war but ended up on some backwater world using her weapons as tools instead. there was a part at the end where she chooses to take up arms again when her new planet gets invaded and the moral was that it’s important to be able to set aside one’s weapons— that you can be more than what you might have been made for— but also to know when it is best to pick them back up.

I like that the character whose predicament we’re brought to consider and empathise with is morally complex in her history as a war machine causing atrocities juxtaposed with her choice to use her gifts to make others’ lives better on her new planet, but that we’re not given enough information to weigh her deeds on the proverbial karmic scale because that’s not the point. her choice is what matters.

i know this is a really long tangent, but the reason i bring this up is because we live in really confusing and lonely fucking times. idk what’s real anymore and i don’t know when we should choose kindness vs we should keep our guard up to the information and people around us.

all of this social media stuff feels way larger and way harder to comprehend than any one person possibly ever could. So, i feel like the best i can do is put my 2 cents out there when i see stuff that upsets me but at the same time try to remember the human on the other side of the screen who is also probably struggling just like me. so yea, i hope you have a good morning/evening/afternoon and thank you for sending your ask and considering my perspective on this issue.

There is a Russian proverb, “do not point the finger at others when you know you are no better yourself”. cultural appreciation and awareness is cool and wonderful! but let’s be completely clear: the reason the world sees russians this way is a direct and intentional result of their country’s own actions. reap what you sow, baby.

i can’t help but play the world’s smallest violin that people have misconceptions of what a russian looks like when the reason that country got so big in the first place is by playing fast and loose with what it means to be russian.

i'm losing my fucking mind. a damn near perfect file in simcity 3000 was chugging along just fine and suddenly everything broke. tax income dropped by like 90%. i was getting warnings about low land value despite them being at their highest nearly across the entire city. baffled, i made a backup save and then let it continue for a bit and. i literally got fucking fired. i lost. i didn't even know you could lose simcity. and again, everything was still just as meticulously perfect as autism/adhd hyperfocus could make it (very).
