"what d'you think?" taiyang asks, sliding the little box over. inside are a pair of fingerless gloves with palm grips and extra padding. both of them have his daughter's iconic emblem stitched on the back, and an R each, at the base of each thumb. "should help keep your hands warm in the cold. stitched them myself, so any imperfections are made with love!"

     ruby grins when she sees the gloves inside the box, and while she’s no expert on sewing, she can’t find a single imperfection. she  q u i c k l y  slips one of them on, wiggling her fingers a bit before squealing happily and wrapping her arms around taiyang for a hug. “thank you so much dad!” she cries, squeezing him tight. “i love them!”

blake!!!

     “      i don’t mean to wake you.  .  .      ”      she muttered softly,      careful not to wake up the rest of the sleeping teammates as the train rattled along the tracks.      blake hadn’t been sleeping as she was never able to do so very easily.      “       you were crying in your sleep.  .  .      is everything okay   ?      ”

     ruby starts a bit when she hears blake’s voice. quickly the young leader wipes her eyes and sits up in bed, smiling as brightly as she can manage. “oh, no, i--” she wasn’t asleep. she couldn’t sleep. seems she’s had trouble ever since haven and she hates it. “i’m okay.” she lies.

sun!!!

          “so, you’re tellin’ me, there’s a…” the simian pauses, glancing around them as if to make sure there were no prying ears about. then, he’s leaning back down, closer to the rose to speak quietly, “secret vault under my school? that’s so cool!”

     ruby nods, though she doesn’t seem as over-enthused as sun does. “right now we’re pretty sure vacuo’s safe, but i think after atlas we’ll have to go there too.” she says. “these people aren’t gonna stop. but...” then she smiles up at him. “i definitely feel better knowing you and your team are gonna be there ahead of us.”

"Ruby!" Yang ran up to her little sister and gave her the biggest hug in the history of hugs! "Are you alright?"

     ruby laughs as she’s wrapped in the hug, jumping a bit so yang can pick her up. “i’m fine!” she says, smiling from ear to ear. “what about you?”

cinder!!!

     No. It was about the simplest response Ruby could have given, but even it was enough to rile up Cinder’s anger and hatred towards the girl. Her gaze narrowed as Ruby spoke her blatant threat, finger’s clenching the handle of the blade with a white-knuckled vice grip.        “…Show me, you say… I’ll cut you down where you STAND!” Practically spitting out her words, the Maiden wasted no time in surging forward towards the young huntress, blind rage and malice driving the woman on. Raising her sword, Cinder quickly took aim for a near-assuredly fatal jab towards Ruby’s chest.

     she doesn’t have nearly enough time to extend crescent rose in its entirety, but she does have time to pull it up over her chest to take the hit. ruby cries out and stumbles backward, just barely catching her balance. she throws out her arm, letting her weapon  e x t e n d  fully.

          “i don’t want to fight you!” she repeats. “we don’t have to do this!” but she will if she has to. she can’t forget that.

cinder!!!

      “Tsk, on and on with this exhausted, STUPID mantra. You yourself make it oh so obvious that you’re bound to fail trying to save everyone… then again, you haven’t exactly done a fine job of saving your dear friends, either!”         Cinder’s bout of laughter only trailed off once the silver-eyed girl approached, an eyebrow raised as the maiden’s expression of amusement slightly faltered. Who did she of all people think she was, demanding things of her… rather than answers, the woman merely raised her hand, a bellow of flames leaving only a daunting blade in her grip. “You entitled little brat…. you want me to answer your questions, yes?                                     Make me.” 

          “ n o . ”  ruby spits. “you only like to talk when you know you have the upper hand. you did it at beacon. you did it at haven. what makes  n o w  any different?” ruby takes a deep breath. “i don’t want to fight you. not because i’m afraid of you but because i’m sick of it. so tell me.”

     she glances briefly to cinder’s left arm, silver eyes glimmering. “...or i’ll show you what i’ve learned about how badly i can really hurt you.”

blake!!!

     “      well.  .  .      ”      she began,      her mind’s eye remembering all of the delicious food she loved back home.      what stuck in her head was of course.  .  .      “      the fish there is really good.      my dad used to get some fresh   &&.   he would fry it up for me   &&.   mama.      there are lots of different ways they could have been cooked.      i especially enjoyed the seared fish that one of the restaurants sold.      ”  

     seared fish sounds like heaven on earth, and ruby  h o p e s  she isn’t drooling. she has a feeling she might be. is she? she puts a hand to her mouth. no, all good. “that sounds so good.” she whispers. “if we ever get to visit you in menagerie you gotta take me there so i can try it!”

     “People like YOU, I’m assuming…. a truly wonderful job you’ve been doing with that so far, by the way.” The maiden’s sinister smile only grew at the sound of Ruby’s harsher tones, a low chuckle following Cinder’s words. Her amusement was welcome indeed, but only a temporary distraction for the fact that she wanted Ruby completely and utterly destroyed.       “Baggage like that keeps them useful, nothing more.  It might be a shame to you, but madness, despair, and countless other emotions make for quite the effective motivator… not everyone can be driven by such childish and sickeningly upstanding morals like you, girl.”

          “wanting to help people isn’t childish.” she spits. “i know i can’t save everyone but i have to try, don’t i? if i don’t then what’s the point?” ruby takes a deep breath and marches up to cinder, staring her in the eye as the girl  s h a k e s  in her boots.

          “tell me now.” she growls. “no tricks, no lies, no jokes. after  e v e r y t h i n g  you’ve put me and my friends through, you owe us that much! so answer me!” she’s so scared she feels like she might  c r y  at any moment. it’s such a sickening feeling, to stare her friends’ murderer in the eye and try to hide how terrified she is.

      “….Why? Really, if that’s still a question you have, then you’re even more naive and pathetic than I once thought.” Nothing but sheer amusement and mockery paint the Maiden’s features as she stares at her would-be opposition. Cinder had half a mind to simply lunge towards and cut down the girl where she stood, but no… that look of confusion and disdain was far too much to give up this soon.       “In case you haven’t noticed, the masses are confused, scared, chaotic… in the face of a unified enemy, they’re left disorganized and weak.” 

          “ s o   w h a t ? ”  ruby spits, a venom in her voice that hardly is used. “they don’t need someone to kick them while they’re down, they need someone to help them stand!” her fists clench at her sides, arms shaking from fear. she can  s e e   i t  in cinder’s eyes: her life is on the line and ruby put it there.

          “what do you get out of all of this?” she repeats. “what do any of you get out of this? this won’t bring hazel’s sister back from the dead! and it won’t make tyrian better! why hurt people who just want to help?”

     a small burst of laughter escaped the feline’s lungs as she landed back against her bunk,      her hands moving to ruby’s side to keep her from falling off the bed,      though ruby’s grip around blake’s shoulders was sure to keep her from doing anything of the sort.      “      yeah,      they had some work to finish up with my dad starting the new movement   &&.   everything.      ”      she paused,      a small hum in thought as she pondered what exactly she should tell ruby.      “      well.  .  .      it’s pretty cramped.      but it’s warm most of the time,      &&.   the beaches are beautiful.      the water is crystal blue.      you can see directly to the bottom,      all the sand   &&.   fish   &&.   ocean life living beneath the surface.      was there anything specific you wanted to know   ?      ”

          “ohh, that sounds so cool!” ruby coos. then she hums, resting her chin on blake’s shoulder as she thinks over the topics she wants to ask about. “tell me about... the food!” she decides. “we’ve gotten to eat so much awesome food since we got on the road and i’ve never had menagerie food! even the fake kind made here in the kingdoms!”
