Solo Show - “I Wonder...”
- I wonder if the exhibition will feature more landscape, people, or space imagery?
- I wonder if the font was a little thicker if it would be more effective?
- Do these colors represent something galactic?
- I wonder how to repetition of stars in the artist's work are important?
- I wonder why the stars are not a typical color?
- I wonder what the gradient effect means in relationship to the stars?
- I am curious to know if the artist intentionally made “Starry Sight” in relationship to “Starry Night”

The one thing that always gives me confidence is my lip gloss! I love this lip gloss because it makes me feel like brand new. Not only that but it reminds me of my mom and best friend who used to have to force me to put it on, so I will be applying my lipgloss before every critique.

Golden Spiral
This image was taken at Jenkinson’s Boardwalk and is an example of how the golden spiral aligns with the image to make it successful. The image is broken up into perfect golden squares and rectangles, and particularly in this image, one can see how each section is filled by something (or lack thereof) in this composition. The most important part of the image is the firework and sign that says Pavilion Arcade, which is emphasized in this photo. At the very end of the spiral one can see the words “Pavilion Arcade”. This acts as a focal point of the image and the fact that it is placed in that area of the golden spiral allows it to jump out at a viewer. Similarly, the fireworks in the image have the same mechanisms working for them. The left side of the composition while bare also adds a lot of depth and elements to the composition. For instance, one can see the depth of the building leading into the dark night sky. Furthermore, the darkness of the sky contrasts very well with the brightness of the signs and the fireworks, allowing them to pop out even further as focal points. The scaling of the image is also successful. The firework from this perspective looks very large and takes up almost a third of the composition. The fact that it is not in the center also gives the piece a lot more movement and content. Overall, this piece utilizes the golden spiral in a successful manner.

Rule of Thirds
This image successfully follows the rule of thirds.  The rule of thirds is a great way to break up a composition in order to emphasize certain points and show exactly what is important in the image. Because the main subject lies just beside the center, it creates a greater emphasis on the sign in the photo. By following the rule of thirds, the eye is able to move around the composition rather than just obviously putting it dead center. In this piece particularly, I believe it is effective because the sign says, “Please leave only your footprints” on one side of the composition, and then one can see a pristine beach on the other side of the composition.  Even though the beach may not be perfectly clean, it still gives off the illusion in this photo. While the sign is the focal point and in the foreground of the image, the rule of thirds allows to point to be made even more clearly because the image is slapped right next to this beach. If there was just a picture of the sign alone, it would probably not be as effective because one can not see the effects of what cleaning up litter could do for the beach. It is also visually pleasing to see the horizon line on the rule of thirds as well because it allows for one to focus on the sky as well. Because the sand does not have a very interesting composition, there is more sky in the photo to emphasize the bright blues seen between the ocean and sky.

Reflective Process Critique
B&W:
What did I do?
For my B&W section, I unfortunately mixed up the instruction and thought the piece had to be composed of found objects as well. However, I still believe I did a successful job of finding grayscale values to match the image. I used a black notebook to outline the image, scrapbook paper for the colored areas, and package wrapping for the lighter valued background.
What was important about it?
I think persistence in this project was very important because it was frustrating working with different materials.
Where could I use this again?
I could probably use these techniques again in different collage work.
Did I see any patterns emerging?
Some patterns I saw emerging was the importance of the outlining to the piece as it gave the piece its context and a completely different feeling.
How well did I do?
I believe I did well despite mixing up the instructions as from afar, my piece does not defer extremely from others. I do wish the image was drawn a little more to scale.
What should I do next?
Next time I should probably write my instructions down in a more organized way so I do not get mixed up.
Color:
What did I do?
For the color portion of the project I used napkins for the white, wrappers for the yellow and red, and old folders for the blue striping as well as the green area, and yarn to make the outlining.
What was important about it?
I think the yarn outlining was the most important part about it because it allowed the piece to come together and look cohesive rather than messy.
Where could I use this again?
I could use this again in creating different textured work, especially in using yarn to create outlining work.
Did I see any patterns emerging?
A pattern I saw emerging was the difficulty of the yarn to stay thin as I was cutting it because it was naturally unraveling.
How well did I do?
I believe my piece was successful in depicting the image. I think it utilized many different textures and came together in an interesting and unsuspecting way.
What should I do next?
Next time I should have a bigger collection of scrap work in order to utilize different and more pieces in my work.
