The statement Vera declared was too accurate about both of the sisters and how their personalities differed from the other. No two people were alike, even if the younger Valdes daughter wished she was anything near and close to what her older sisters were like. Though, after her misfortune of losses as the years dragged on, Ava became quieter on her thoughts and beliefs on a future for herself. Things were different now. It was just something she didn’t share with Vera because any moment didn’t feel right enough for Ava. Perhaps, now was the chance as she toyed around with the thermostat in her chilly, unoccupied home from the past few weeks. “Yeah, maybe I should. Just let Papa know I need this favor and I’ll pay him back,” she answered, finally cranking up the temperature with the buttons before turning to Vera with a weary smile. In all honestly, she didn’t quite know where Alec and her were in times of living, regardless of her having crashed at his place but eventually, the topic could come around. She wasn’t jumping the gun on it but anything is possible with them being back together. Right now, all she could do was agree with Vera’s proposal. “Go and take a hot shower. Hopefully by the time you get out, it will be warmer.” Knowing, she didn’t need to say it a second time, her sister had a mind and was moving long before Ava could finish off her words. Finding herself sitting on the edge of her neat bed, comforter in pristine condition as if Ava fixed her bed this morning before dashing off to an occupied work day. “Yeah, well, work keeps me busy. If I’m not here, I’m pulling all nighters with my patients. Nothing is ever safe,” she informed in return. Pushing herself off her bed, now roaming to the doorway of her closest as arms crossed, leaning against the wooden frame and smiling toward her sister. “You know I’ve never been the type for partying. Nina and yourself make up for my lacking interest in it. Remember the few times I went out, dragging Alec with and he had to carry me back home? Pretty sure I only had two drinks and I was out like lightening,” she laughed, reflecting on the memory of her high school days and the lavish parties. But, if her sister wanted to take her out then Ava would go. “When do you want to go out?” She poised the question, lingering a few moments longer in silence. “How are you feeling?” It was a question Ava always returned to Vera without needing to explain.
Tumblr media
Vera understood a busy work schedule, in fact, all the Valdes women did. It was good, in her mind, to keep yourself busy because it kept your body and mind working at all times. It promotes an active metabolism, it gave one a purpose, and it kept the mind from stressing over stupid little things. At least, that’s how it was for Vera and so it was why she committed herself to her work so much rather to a committed relationship.
“I know, but it’s good for you to go out sometimes. Not always, but just sometimes.” Vera replied, still combing through the material. “Just to get yourself into a different mindset, else you might as well marry your job. That wouldn’t be so good for you.” She snorted, glancing over her shoulder at Ava, none the wiser to her current situation with Alec. “I don’t know. Some weekend, where you don’t have to work in the morning. That way you feel free all night, you don’t worry about how much to drink, or where you might end up later that night...” She suggested with a smirk. At the sudden question, however, Vera’s smile faded a little. “Warmer.” She replied, knowing that that wasn’t the answer her sister was looking for, but Vera didn’t feel like talking about it. “We should plan a family holiday for next year. Just us, Nina if she can get the time off. Mama can watch the babies, we can go somewhere warm. Somewhere where cocktails are cheap. I hear Thailand is good.”

novakslovensky‌:
Things were beginning to feel safe here which both comforted and terrified Novak. Getting too comfortable was a bad thing because it meant guards went down and he could be caught but damnit, he deserved at least a little bit of time without feeling on high alert. Still, the easy and basic things to life were welcomed today as he was tired from work. Pushing his cart through the grocery store, he passed for a moment to push up his sleeves a bit. Kingsholm’s weather allowed for him to hide the scars from his past, especially an incomplete LSRN that the staff at the facility in Germany had loving branded into his upper arm but the grocery store was warm. He had already tossed off his jacket and hat but damn it was still uncomfortable in the store.
Rounding the corner, he felt his cart collide with the end display. Cans tumbled from the impact, the noise ringing out into the store as they rolled in all directions. “Fuck it.” Came out before he could stop it as he moved to start picking up the cans he had knocked over. His eyes locking on someone close by. “What? You can stop staring.”
Tumblr media
She’d only wanted to get a can of søt mais off the shelf when her path was dramatically crossed by a small tower of other cans crashing across the floor. Giving an immediate huff of impatience, she looked at the boy with a harsh stare, clear disapproval on her face as she then took a step over the mess. At his reply to her reaction, however, she was not so impressed. “Yes, and you can stop making a mess of other people’s errands.” She quipped back quickly, simply wanting to be done with her grocery shopping so that she could go home and not have to deal with people for the rest of the evening. “How about that, hmm? Or is it too difficult for you?”

The line for the only open register was ridiculous, in thanks to it being the only one available and the mania that possesses people during the holiday season. Kingsholm seemed like such a lowly populated town and yet it was like the entirety of Norway was always there when all Tavi wanted was a quick trip to get wine and chocolate cake. So, she stood, happy that at least someone familiar was nearby to kill time with. “You’re right, they don’t like it — I don’t like it. In fact, I hate how right you are. Honestly, it’s like you head out in your usual routine, but then you see a ceramic Nisse that’s so cute and it’s ruined the entire vibe of the outing. Do I buy it because it’s adorable to look at and everyone hates the negative types around Christmas? Or do I not buy it because I like to complain about capitalism?” A wave of her hand punctuated the dramatic tangent, before Tavi looked at the wine in her basket with a wistful sigh before she turned back to Vera, energetic once more as she spoke. “I need to start on that as soon as possible. What are you up to tonight?”
Tumblr media
Hearing the two options, Vera thinned her lips into a flat smile and spread her hands out, because she had nothing to add but agree. She liked the festive season, she loved the community tree and the lights and the way snow glittered outside when you were warm on the inside. But the people... the crowds and the people she could do without. “Hmm, nothing exciting.” Vera looked then at Ida who still was all-consumed by the iPad. “I thought maybe I would pull the decorations out, not that I intend to start putting them up, but with work being so crazy at the moment, I need to plan ahead.” Looking back at Tavi then, she tilted her head with a small smile. She knew Tavi would get it. The festive season, it was a bad time for everyone, and Silver accidents were no exception. “What about you?”

His smile merely grew wider as he heard Vera’s answer, far used to the hidden meanings behind her demeanor and ways these days. Though, one part of him wished she didn’t need to hide the parts of her that stood thankfully or craved aid, that her mood got the better of her and washed away the traits he had come to enjoy from Vera’s company since his younger years. Things had changed, as it did, and you had to find a way to adapt was all. “And what’s that supposed to mean? Just because my hips are getting rusty doesn’t mean I can’t keep up with the youth of today!” Matías nudged her shoulder in a playful manner, nodding in the direction of her home as he started to walk forward. “How are things though, besides wet?”
Tumblr media
Vera’s eyebrows rose and she blew out a sigh, as if not in total agreeance of his statement about his rusty hips. “Between you and myself, I think you should be applying for retirement.” She risked, sarcastically, before joining him under the umbrella. With the elbow that he nudged her with, she grabbed it. First, scoldingly, before she softened and held onto it to keep them connected under their shelter. “Well... Truthfully, they could be better. Work is absolutely suffocating me at the moment, there is so much paperwork and not enough hours in the day to do it in... And Ida has been really grumpy with me lately. I think because I’ve been at work so much, she’s making it impossible to be the good guy. Did I tell you Stefan is taking her to dancing lessons now? Soon, she’ll come home telling me he’s bought her a car and that’ll be the end of it.”

Leon was used to bad weather. How could you not be around a place like Kingsholm where the weather was so unpredictable? He was also used to training in the rain, one of the reasons why it hardly bothered him – but after hitting up the store, all he wanted was to get back into the safety of his car. He stopped halfway when he noticed a woman standing in the rain, seemingly glued to the spot as she rummaged through her handbag. Shielding his eyes from the rain, he shook his head. “No, thanks,” he said, before taking a step closer. “Do you need help though? It’s not that much fun to stand out in the rain, is it?”
If there was a line of people queuing for the random help of a stranger, Vera would considerably be at the back of it, or maybe not lined up at all. She hated the idea of handouts, hated people getting anything for free, and didn’t trust the apparent kindness of anyone who didn’t know her. So she looked at the man suspiciously, already in a bad mood as she was soaked to the core. “I’m not doing this because I want to.” She shot, “But unless you have an unexplainable key to my house on you then you’re really of no use to me. I think I left my keys at work and that’s on the other side of town, stupid me for getting a taxi.”

Once under the safety of her awning, the brunette began to dig through her work bag, searching for the helplessly tossed item of her keys and thankfully finding them moments later. Jiggling the keys in her hand before unlocking her front door, knowing it would be culture shock to be back in her place after spending her spare time at Alec’s. Withholding a stunned and chilly expression as she entered further, placing her bag on table by the door before shooting Vera a bright smile, “What can I say? When a damsel is in distress, I come running.” She joked heavily. “You’re my sister. I’ll drop everything for you. I want you to never forget that.” With the amount of times Ava informed Vera couldn’t be counted on both hands. “I leave for work and my house becomes a freezer. Do you want to head to my room and borrow some clothes? I think the last thing we need is you getting sick under my care.”
Tumblr media
"True,” Vera sighed with a smile. “You are like a little princess in armor saving all the men from the dragons. Me, I let the dragons eat the men.” She joked, walking into her sister’s home like it was her own, putting her handbag down where she always did, and taking her boots off. Shivering and hissing through her teeth, Vera agreed. “You should really invest in some induction unit heating, let Papa send that man who did mine over and sort this place out. I think the only way I’m going to warm up in here is if I take a hot shower — then I will borrow something.” She announced before taking her hair out of its wet up-do, and meandering down the hallways towards the main bathroom. She liked Ava’s home. Of course, not as much as her own given that their styles varied in some aspects, but as a whole, Vera approved of it a lot. At least when one didn’t spend much time here, it stayed clean, unlike Nina’s and Vera’s seemed to with small children running around. Running a steaming hot shower and letting her pores open themselves to the heat level of hell, it only took Vera a speedy four minutes to thaw herself out and re-familiarise herslef with Ava’s closet. “So many things in here you never wear...” She called out finally as she went through different garments. “You need to go out more. I need to take you out more so that you can wear this stuff. Look,” She pinched at a dress. “Price tag still attached. Horrendous.” Vera joked before pulling out a glittery, slinky number that she’d never seen Ava wear, not even once. Vera flung it over her arm then and decided she was going to try it on just for fun.

Turning her attention from the somewhat tilted upwards glare at the speaker back down to the line and the people around her, Octavia’s gaze fell onto Vera, and it was like the judgemental part of her felt a kindred spirit — despite the women not having a lot to do with each other, there were some things that were identifiable even in the briefest of interactions. “Honestly, do we have to spell it out in the stars or something for corporations to get the hint? People don’t like being brainwashed with Christmas carols and decorations. It’s not going to make us buy your things more.”
Tumblr media
Vera paused in her shopping, not normally one to make small-talk by choice, but it seemed that Tavi was in the mood. Anyway, Ida was busy watching something on the iPad in her cart, so for once, Vera had the freedom to almost do what she pleased right now. “They might not like it but I think it’s proven clearly that the human race is by far the most stupid and impressional of them all.” She responded, leaning against her shopping cart. “I think I’m very stubborn but even I see the og polkagriser on sale and think that I need to buy it. And if you don’t, the rest of the community makes you feel guilty for not participating.”

Nodding along as Vera let him in on her mishappenings, he could do nothing but battle a mix of amusement blended with relief that he had managed to bump into her in the case of an emergency. “Good thing I have a spare key, then. Either way, we have to get you out of this cold. You’re no use to Ida with the flu.” Matías sighed, holding over the umbrella Vera’s way so that she could grab it and properly shield herself until they got inside. He had a perfectly dry jacket, he’d survive. “Onwards to warmth we go!”
Tumblr media
Vera hated to accept help, and she didn’t much like it when people offered either. But Matías wasn’t people — he was family. A connective limb of her own upbringing and a niche part of her safe space which she rarely allowed herself to confide in. But right now, she could do with the shelter and a spare key. There wasn’t many in her life she trusted with such things, but Matías had earned a respect and appreciation long ago. Trying to hold back the grateful grin, she began to put her things back into her handbag, settling for the offer. “Fine... But you best keep up, you know I hate to deviate.” She said in a tone that only those who knew when Vera was teasing would be able to identify.

She was just trying to get groceries. There was a distinct lack of instant noodles and tea leaves in her pantry, which needed restocking almost immediately or her life would fall apart and the world as she knew it would explode — or something like that without the melodrama. But as Octavia moved towards the register, she paused at the end of a line, curiosity but also morbid shock registering on her features as she looked for the speakers in question; tucking her hair behind her ears, she spoke, almost to no one in particular. “Is that Christmas music?”
Tumblr media
Thankfully, despite Kingsholm’s size, they did hold ownership of a full-service grocery and for that, it allowed Vera to do her shopping late rather than early like most people. Weighing up a bag of kavring in one hand, she hadn’t been paying attention to the gentle melody playing from the speakers until a woman spoke up beside her. Turning and recognizing her from the Institute ( Vera was very good with faces ) she then took a moment to also listen. “Helsike...” She sighed, slowly looking around the store and then at Tavia. “It’s too soon.”

rylannorwood‌:
This was his evening, as his mother proudly informed her only son. It was a momental step forward in his skyrocketing carer. Those were her precise words, not his. He was a humble man who didn’t really dwell too much on his work accomplishments for that matter. Though, his mother was the complete opposite of him. She lived on the fact of sharing word around town over how grateful for having such three talented kids on the end of the day. She boasted quite a bit. Not even caring if it annoyed anyone but living alone for years in the childhood Norwood household with a husband no-longer in the picture and knowing book club could only be so much, she lived off their success. Though, Rylan compared to his sisters, he allowed it to happen and he couldn’t imagine not having his mother tag along for the evening. If anything, he wouldn’t hear the end about it as she kindly, but subtly reminded him, over his choices. Nonetheless, he could spot the happiness of his mother’s expression for tonight and this was all he needed.
It was a stranger sight in front of him. It was something he figured was bond to happen soon or later, which it happened later, but nonetheless, here he was standing across from his ex-girlfriend on the evening of his grand evening. In another life, if things did work out and his seer abilities didn’t ruin the possibility of their potential happiness, they could’ve been here alongside one another as a couple. It was a time when Rylan wanted everything for her and would’ve laid his life down for her like an obsessed young boy he once was. Of course, the things he had for Vera simply didn’t fade away into the abyss. After all, she was his first love and the one person who managed to put him in his place when everything was chaos on his life. But some things needed to end for growth. Word traveled quick for him over the new, startling changes in her life and even though, in the beginning, he wished it was him. It was his own heartbreak and his own fault for how things ended with them. It was also him knowing if he got too involved with Vera, things like his Seer abilities would’ve caught up to him in a matter of time and he lied. He stayed lying in their relationship ever since he found out at thirteen. He still loved and cared about her like anyone ex-boyfriend would. But, he wanted the best for her. If it was another, then so be it. Rylan was content with that happy ending for her. Even though, truthfully, after he learned about her engagement and pregnancy, he stopped on wanting to know about anything and everything related to her. It was his moving forward period.
But, she looked incredible. Even if he didn’t dare to share those words with her or ever allow them to slip off his tongue, she still knew how to make his speechless. There was something different about her hair and she aged beautifully. Though, everyone knew Vera would grow up to be a beautiful young woman from the discussion in their teen years. Clearing his throat, snapping out of his once former heart eyes at the woman Rylan used to think about on the daily, he breathed out before focusing on the crowd swarming around as people further invested in conversations. Cynthia, his mother, was a personal ping pong around the room, thanking everyone for appearing long before Rylan even had a chance to make his rounds that way. Though, her next words caused his gun metal hues to immediately tuck into a roll, lips pressing into a fine line. It was something he knew Vera would’ve called him out on even though, he didn’t need the proper clarification over his work. It was a simple manor of him attempting to make small talk with the woman whom he hadn’t seen in ages, though, it felt like ages. She was the only person Rylan ever allowed to put him back in his place. “I was making small talk,” he informed after a moment of silence. The hues, who were avoiding the female, fell on her gaze and he could feel as his heart thumped for her. It was insane to imagine how much time passed over between them. “After all, what has it been? Ten or so years? Something along those lines? A lot has changed so the sight of us remembering each other quirks and whatnot has easily become a blurry sight.” A lie, but it was but it wasn’t any intention to rile either one of them up. He didn’t forget about her. It didn’t mean she remembered him. Not from what he heard. “Figured it was nice to ask someone who wasn’t an old man, who has the slightest idea, or even, my mother, for that matter, literally tells me everything is perfect every two seconds.” The explanation probably wasn’t worthy but nonetheless, he exposed it right off the tip of his tongue. Attempting a weak smile toward her direction but it flattened moments later, just like the state of his expression.
“Anyway,” he mumbled to himself, gun metal hues glazing around the room. This felt surreal. He wasn’t the type of person to feel in these settings. Everything about it just felt really weird and unreal. Like this was a dream, in which he could predict with his abilities, but they always changed. A lot changed from the first moment when he first visioned it. “How are you?” He finally found it in him to find out. To show an ounce he cared. He wasn’t the type of guy to fully hide his emotions. He wore them quite in the open but he was quiet as well. Minding his business and further getting himself invested in work because it took a lot out of him.
Tumblr media
“And I was providing it. What, did my opinion offend you?” Her chin jutted outwards him, a hard frown forming on her brows as she drove the attack home. Her words were quick, agile, and already fully formed before he’d even gotten his statement out it seemed. But that was Vera, always on the defense, always the quick thinker. “Eight years,” She clarified precisely, then suddenly dropped her gaze away and allowed her stiff posture to melt a little. Vera didn’t want to appear as if she’d been crossing every day off on the calendar, but she found it hard to forget things. Dates, details, names, people... Perhaps it was why she was so good at her job. A job Rylan would have known nothing about, she reminded herself, since he’d decided to totally uproot himself from her life eight years ago.
When he mentioned his mother, Vera felt a pang of something in her gut which turned into guilt. She’d seen the woman not five minutes ago, but had taken to ducking behind a planter vase to avoid any source of social contact. Vera just didn’t feel like it. She felt like being at home with her movies and her wine bottle or strewn among someone else's expensive linen until she’d creep out the next morning without even so much as a phone number trail. Initially, she’d been excited for this event. Now... she just wanted to go home.
His Anyway made her look back up at him involuntarily. A knee-jerk reaction she hadn’t anticipated and regretted the moment their eyes met again. There was still something there. She couldn’t describe it, in any language or conceptual way, just that she felt it when she looked at him. A dead-weight inside her, the kind a person might buy a plane ticket for or say something they might regret, or regret worse if they don’t. It was a confusing feeling. And so... Vera did what she did best, and tried to drive it to the far back of her mind and into the vault.
“Really? We are going to do it like this?” She asked, tone dry as she looked at him in disappointment. On the contrary, Vera didn’t know what other way she would have it. A part of her wanted to be kind to him because she knew that truly, deep down, he surely deserved it from her. But another part was still hurt. Another part of her held a grudge so fierce and so habitual that by now, it only burdened her with resentment. “I’m fine. I work hard, I keep myself busy and honestly, I don’t think I owe you any more details on the matter. If you actually cared then maybe you wouldn’t have completely disappeared from my life out of the blue. However,” She said curtly, bravely looking back at him now. “Seeing as this is a chance meeting, and you can barely even look me in the eye for more than four seconds, I am willing to make the judgment that you don’t care and this is equally as uncomfortable for you as it is for me. So shall we do ourselves a favor and not pretend as if we’re happy for one another in a crowded room full of strangers?”

silverkillersonya‌:
“An au pair?” Sonya raised her eyebrows and then shook her head. “Oh, no, not at all. I despise how au pairs are treated in this country. Have you read of the schemes and abuse and exploitation of those women who come to Norway to be au pairs? Tsk, tsk…I do not think I could be a nanny full time,” she admitted. While she could handle kids in short doses, usually for her own personal gain, she lacked any hint of a maternal instinct. She was that type of horrible person who could watch a child drowning and do nothing, blaming it on the child’s own naiveté. “Well, let me know if you would like anything else,” she said with a smile. She criss-crossed her legs and popped another piece of popcorn in her mouth. “Yes. I will watch a film and then take Mateo to his family. Make sure he is safe and sound. Your daughter and her cousin look excited. Are they looking forward to a specific film?”
Tumblr media
Vera’s lips thinned, working for the legal system, she was quite aware of the trauma some women went through in different ways in this country. But she decided to keep an apathetic stance on the matter for the sake of this woman whom she didn’t trust. “I had to ask,” She said. “Some women haven’t got the option to get out of it once they’re in it. So, I had to ask. I’m skeptical of nanny’s for this reason.” She was skeptical of people in general, after half the things she’d seen in her time.
Looking at the little boy as the woman spoke, Vera tilted her head, swearing in a flash of a second that he looked a bit familiar. But as Mateo moved another inch, it was gone. Vera wondered if she needed a coffee or if her week of stress was getting to her tonight. Blinking out of it, she laughed. “Oh, no, they are always like this together. They are at the erm... repeating... copy-cat age. Everything her cousin does, she has to do too and the same works both ways.” Vera struggled to describe it in English but got there in the end. “But Ida, she’s...” Vera shook her head, not even sure where to begin on describing her daughter. “Very much like me. Though, I would have to say warmer. Much warmer, like the sun. Some of the things she says I don’t think I have ever said in my life. It’s good, I think.”

As a doctor, always preaching about one’s health and lifestyle choices to her patients, she often did the opposite. It was rarely she even lashed out on junk food. But, weighing the options of having apples, which she adored, or sweet treats throughout the movie marathon, she leaned toward the latter aspect just for tonight. “Making you fat? Never please, if anything, you’re body goals. Did I never tell you that before?” Ava reassured her older sister, head titling toward the side. A smile did arise on her mouth corners, happily handing off the sweet popcorn toward her now, “So, we got some time before the movie starts.. what’s been new with you? It feels like it been a hot second since I last saw you.” Which was far from it but after all, Ava spent most of her time with Vera and now, she was attempting to spilt time between Alec and her sisters now.
Tumblr media
“You told me. I was just making sure you heard me. I’m being very good at the moment, you need to not distract me.” She thumped her sister playfully on the leg then, eyeing the collection of goods and deciding that no, she would be picky. She had to be picky, if she was going to keep her diet in such good order. “Mmmm, not entirely much that I can tell you. There’s no movement on the main case,” She didn’t want to mention the Edwards files in public while people were still on edge about it, she knew that Ava would know whom she was talking about. “I’m afraid it’s only turning me crazy. I think I’m actually losing hair at this point, going around in circles. I think it’s close to being filed away as something unsolvable for now.” Looking at Ava, she shrugged. “But that’s old news. What about you?”

“Me, myself, and maybe you if you take that frown off your face,” Morgan rose an eyebrow at her, motioning to the popcorn, “You know you want some of this. Don’t act like I’m not bringing food over as an offering.”
Tumblr media
She looked over the small banquet again, as if just to make sure she wasn’t seeing things. “Maybe it’s an offering of some sort, but did you even check to ask what I might like?” Vera scoffed, “It may not be any of that.”
