I like how the first half of Don Carlos has the audience watching the title character run around and throw himself onto his knees and beg everyone he knows for some scrap of proof that they love him, and wondering "how can this 23-year-old who (as he claims) has never been in charge of anything ever be responsible for so much chaos? Is this really the guy upon whom the fate of the realm depends?" Meanwhile Posa is in the background, asking himself similar questions.
And then the third act begins, Philip takes center stage, and we (& Posa) learn exactly where he gets it from
