I’m very curious about the Enlightened Language and its evolution over time. What are the phonetic rules? The grammatical rules? The writing system? Have they changed over time? It’s said that runes are only used for fanciness. What writing system is used now? When did this change happen?

I confess that I have limited knowledge of this topic, having missed several millennia of its development and having always gravitated towards the sciences in my research, but I will tell you what I know.

The Language is...strange.

Many elves do not realize this, as there is, at this time, more or less one monolithic Enlightened Language, but the Enlightened Language is regional by nature.

If groups of elves live separate from one another, as we did in my youth before light-leaping, the Language evolves independently in each group, slowly changing to match the needs of those who speak it.

It is not a process that is well understood. There is some unknown force at work that seems almost conscious, even omniscient. It is the same force that changes the proportion of abilities in the elvin population to meet our needs—the force that gave us both Fintan and Lord Bronte—Councillor Bronte, now—in the same generation less than a millennium before the onset of the great wars, and has given us two new pyrokinetics in recent years—a poor omen for what is to come.

When I was young, the Languages were almost entirely distinct. Parts of the Languages bled into one another as traders carried words back and forth with them, but the words were only instinctive to the elves of the realms from which they came.

I remember when Fintan first arrived in the Southern Realm. He had studied the Southern Language, but his words were unwieldy, like those of the other species who tried to speak our Language. With time, he improved, but it was still a learned language to him, not instinctive. 

With the discovery of light-leaping, all this changed. Our Languages began to merge. I would awaken with the unfamiliar words of the Northern Language on my tongue, suddenly seeming as though I had spoken them all my life. Fintan would greet me in ways I had never taught him. Our species became one.

In the present day, it is as though we have multiple distinct sets of grammatical and phonetic rules within the same Language. This can even be observed by outsiders. If you pay close attention, you will notice a shift in the sounds of the words as elves switch between topics. An elf speaking of the lush valleys of Eternalia sounds different from an elf speaking of the cold expanses of the Northern tundra.

Some words are from none of the old Languages. I still remember the day that elvinkind awoke with our mouths filled with new words for blood and pain and death—words not just for the other species, but for ourselves. Some consider that the day that the great wars truly started.

A similar process occurs, of course, with the learned languages, particularly those of fractured species like humans, but it occurs to a far lesser extent than in instinctive Languages.
