Tobias Hellkvist - SWE

Tobias Hellkvist (b. 1984) is a Swedish composer, sound designer, foley- and sound artist. Whilst being best known musically for his ambient, drone and electroacoustic output, which has been released worldwide on labels like Home Normal (UK/JPN), Dronarivm (RUS), Fluid Audio (UK) and Dragon’s Eye Recordings (US), he's also been active in genres such as punk, folk, indie rock and electronica since the early 2000's.

After releasing his first widely distributed solo album back in 2010, Hellkvist has gained recognition for his music in which he combines dense layers of heavily processed drones and synthesized textures with acoustic instruments and field recordings, blending electronic and organic sound worlds together. His cinematic atmospheres has been referred to as dynamic, varied and “packed full of life”, however some of his works are very minimal and invites the listener into a focused state of mindful listening and awareness.

Over the years, Hellkvist has taken part in various compilations, remix projects and collaborations, and has grown a small following in Japan and parts of Europe and North America. He's performed live shows in Copenhagen, London and Los Angeles and his compositions has been used in indie short films, commercials, art installations and performances.

Among Hellkvist's most recent projects is a trans-continental collaboration with Andrew Tasselmyer of Hotel Neon, dubbed Mordançage. Born from a shared interest in sound design and painstakingly crafted from a diverse range of sound sources from around the globe, the duo's 2018 debut album released via UK ambient label Fluid Audio encompasses 45 minutes of majestic, shimmering ambiance that belies the detailed and precise recording process that created it.

2018 saw Hellkvist composing his first score for a short film, as well as finishing another full-length album set for release in June 2019.

Aside from the music, Hellkvist also works as a professional sound designer and foley artist - a career that was recently crowned with receiving double Emmy nominations (2017 and 2018) for his sound work on the animated TV-series LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures. He's also working on the highly popular LEGO Ninjago: Masters Of Spinjitzu series, which has received several nominations and awards worldwide during recent years.

Aside from his professional sound design career, he’s also doing occasional production, mixing and mastering work for other artists and labels, and is constantly crafting songs in a wide array of genres for TV/film licensing purposes under the name Toby Henny, currently represented by Marmoset Music in Portland, Oregon.

Home Normal press release: After being thoroughly shaped and fine-tuned over the course of the past 3 years, 'Vesterhavet' is the first proper full-length album from Swedish electroacoustic composer Tobias Hellkvist since his two landmark releases on Home Normal - 2010's 'Evolutions' and 2012's 'Everything Is Connected'. Even though he hasn't been inactive since then, having had several works released by labels such as Dragon's Eye Recordings, Dronarivm and lesser known Tokyo Droning and Small Fragments - 'Vesterhavet' however, does in many ways pick up where his last full-length left off almost four years ago. "I started working on this album directly after 'Everything Is Connected' was finished, so it kind of makes sense if this feels like a continuation of that sound. However, I've definitely explored some new ways of working on this album, both technically and musically", Hellkvist says. After self-releasing a five track version of the album in March 2016, we came together with Tobias and decided it was a great shame that ‘Vesterhavet’ did not have a physical release of the album. We decided that it would partner his reissue of ‘Kaskelot’ perfectly as it really highlights the breadth of his work from the beautifully direct melodies of ‘Kaskelot’, compared to the massive sounding layers of subtle melody that lie in ‘Vesterhavet’. Tobias decided to remaster the original album and extend it with a part 6 himself appearing on the CD. Alongside this is this gorgeous 12 minute remix by Warmth as a bonus download from the Home Normal store which does not appear on the CD. This puts a close to a four year period of creation for this truly epic work, and we are really proud to once again be working with such a talented artist as Tobias once again on our fourth outing together. Thank you.

Visual Concept

Inspired by the rippling waters of Vesterhavet, the visual concept is to compliment the sound bath of drone and sound, with an equally immersive bath of light and color. 

Using as many LED Water Effect DMX Lighting Fixtures as budget and logistics allow for, the lights will be situated in an array around the venue to create the most immersive effect. Working closely with Tobias on the composition of his performance, the audio/visual dynamic will become complete by choreographing parameters of light intensity and color with the mood and dynamics of the audio performance.
