Happy World Vexillology Day! Here’s Whitney Smith (1940-2016), founder of modern vexillology, as a child. From his obituary in the New York Times.

According to #FIAV: "The birthday of modern #vexillology is commonly recognized to be the publication of the first issue of The Flag Bulletin [the first flag studies journal] on October 1, 1961 by Gerhard Grahl and Whitney Smith [pictured].” Celebrate World Vexillology Day on October 1st!

#Repost @vexillologica (@get_repost) ・・・ The flag of the Seto people, which are the native people living south of Lake Peipus, in Estonia and Russia. This region is also called Setomaa. The Seto people speak the Seto language. - The number of Setos is estimated at 10,000. In Russia, according to 2002 census, 197 people declared themselves of Seto nationality. Setos in Estonia consider their language a separate one, not just a dialect of Estonian. - The flag shows a red Nordic Cross embroidered with a traditional waving pattern of the Seto people on a white background. - There was an earlier flag in use by Seto people since 1992 until the adoption of the current flag in 2007. Under that flag the Setos were demanding reunification of their ancestral lands within Estonia, but to no avail. There was also a second version with the much broader red stripes. The old and the new flag recalls the ornamentation of the Seto traditional costumes. - Follow my second account @coaotw for different coats of arms from around the world 🌍 - #vexillologica #vexillology #seto #setomaa #setumaa #flag #flags #russia #estonia #weloveflags #flagsoftheworld (at Estonia)

#Repost @smug_jewface (lower part of table) ・・・ Since it's Canada day, I think I'd repost this interesting find I just happened to stumble upon. Personally, I think that the 11th, 12th and 13th flags are the best ones because they are the most symbolic and less, errr...ugly. Vexillology is one of my favorite subjects and I would LOVE to discuss flags with anyone at any time. #canada #canadaday #flag #vexillum #vexillology #history (at Canada)
