1. Writing, thinking, and looking critically
I believe Jackson Pollock went from using abstract imagery in his painting to removing all imagery in his famous “drip” paintings because he was studying with Thomas Hart Benton. Pollock idolized Benton, his mentor, throughout their entire time together and even after they went their way. When they first met, Benton had just started to paint a mural representing American life, becoming the leading American painter. When Benton went away because of his success, Pollock then started to find his own voice as an artist. He went from painting realism to experimenting with abstract art. Pollock had his first major commission to paint a Mural. Shortly after, people started to hear about him. Pollock admired Benton and tried to paint the mural Benton dreamed of doing, paintings for America, but when he failed, he got mad and started to throw the paint onto the canvas. He could not do what Benton was able to do, but even though he could not do it the way he wished, he was determined to do it the way he could. That is how his “drip” painting came to life. Pollock went from realism to abstract art and removed all imagery because he found his own way of making art.

Virtual Sketchbook 3
Francesco Granacci painted The Assumption of the Virgin. Granacci created this artwork on an oil-on wood panel. The dimensions are 90 x 81 inches. Granacci used the colors blue, yellow, gold, red, orange, brown, green, purple, silver, white and black in this artwork. This artwork has two angels, five people, and what looks like the Virgin. The five men are surrounding what looks like a grave, and above the grave, the Virgin is located with two angels surrounding the Virgin in the air. There is balance in this artwork, creating a feeling of stability with the help of symmetry and asymmetry. There is symmetry in which both sides have the same elements in the same position in the air. However, the space underneath has asymmetry. Rhythm is created by applying similar colors and arranging shapes and lines together to create a flow. There is also contrast both between the colors and the subjects. It has rhythm, unity, and variety, together making the elements fit comfortably and creating space for the eyes to rest and areas of interest. I believe the essential principle used is the emphasis on creating an area of the composition that is visually dominant and command the viewer's attention. This artwork represents the Virgin (as it says in the title) being praised by people underneath. This artwork makes me feel joy, openness, and calm because of how all the elements are used together. The Assumption of the Virgin is associated with the Renaissance, and the one that commissioned it was the Medici Chapel in Florence, which celebrated the Medici family. This artwork reflects Florentine style, and even though the painting was primarily made for someone else, the way Granacci was able to tell a story so well makes me believe that he may have believed in the story. Additionally, his use of principles of design like asymmetrical balance, emphasis, and directional forces, show us that he is an excellent painter. I believe that Granacci was trying to say through his artwork that The Virgin's death was not like any other death. Instead, angels took the Virgin into heaven, her soul and body. I think Granacci's message comes across very well, and we can clearly understand it with all the elements in his artwork. This painting is important because it represents an important event in Roman Catholicism; The Virgin assumed into heaven. Also, it was a revolutionary composition. Because while earlier religious paintings had been relatively static, this painting has energy and life. I picked this artwork because it stood out to me. Every element focuses on the Virgin being taken up into heaven, and I wanted to know more about its history.

JOURNALING
Principles of Design:
Unity and Variety:
Unity is when different elements work together in a composition and create a sense of wholeness.
Variety is the use of different visual elements in a composition
Tumblr media
Balance: Balance is how elements of art relate to each other in composition with regard to the visual weight to create a visual equilibrium. There are two different ways to achieve balance, either with symmetry or asymmetry.
Symmetrical balance: Symmetry is when the work of art when equal weights are on equal sides of a composition. It may be a mirror image of itself.
Tumblr media
Asymmetrical balance: Asymmetry is the opposite; the sides do not have equal weights. Alternatively, different elements are balanced throughout the work; either in shape, size, meaning, and/or light and contrast.
Tumblr media
Emphasis and subordination:
Emphasis is used to attract the viewer's attention to a main spot or subject of an art work; this main focus is called focal point. The point where the artist wants most attention.
Tumblr media
Subordination is the opposite effect of emphasis; it is areas where the artist wants to make less importance
Tumblr media
Directional forces:
Directional forces are used by artist to impact the viewer’s look at a work of art by arranging elements in the work so it can move the viewer’s eyes around the art.
Tumblr media
Repetition and Rhythm:
Repetition is when elements are repeating many times in a work of art.
Tumblr media
Rhythm is the repetition of elements in a work of art with associated variations.
Tumblr media
Scale and Proportion:
Scale is the size of object in the artwork.
Tumblr media
Proportion is the relation based on size between object in a artwork.

Andrea di Lione, TOBIT BURYING THE DEAD (CHAPTER 3:1).
This artwork contains implied lines that form geometric shapes like a triangle with the head of the white figure as its apex, implied depth, linear perspective, focal points, complementary colors, unity and variety, asymmetrical balance, directional forces, and scale and proportion.
3. Connect art to your world
Colors affect people's lives in many different ways. My high school in Norway was really into making study groups different colors that could help with our mood and help us focus better, and honestly, at first, I thought it was a waste of money and time to make it different for the students. I did not see how the colors of the walls in a room could help me as a student. I hated the colors they used; it did not look pretty at all, but I did not care and wanted to use the room regardless of the color. I remember one study room in particular which was colored green; all four walls in the room, and the saturation was really high so I did not think it looked pretty. Before using the green study room, I did not know what to expect. My principal told us that he painted the room green to help us when studying, which I did not believe would help, so when using the room for the first time, I noticed a difference. I was more peaceful, felt more balance while doing work, and most importantly it increased my productivity!  I had never done that much schoolwork before, as I did that day. From that day on, I used the green room as many times as possible and it helped me a lot through high school; it changed my high school work experience totally. After my first time using the room, I noticed I liked the color. The room had a nice middle-value hue and it was relaxing. Even though the green color helped me, I like more unsaturated hues, like pastel colors, and low saturation.
I have always liked the analogous color schemes, and that is the one color scheme I would pick for my life. That is because the colors in the analogous scheme are pretty similar with no high contrast which brings me peace and is relaxing to watch.

My top 5 interactive designs, according to me:
1. Uber
2. Nike
3. Netflix
4. Spotify
5. Instagram
My favorite interactive design is Spotify. What makes a good interactive design for me is that it needs to make it available for users to achieve their goals in the best way. This can be achieved by the correct use of words, aesthetics, visual representations, and space. It needs to be easy to use and easy to learn how to use. I believe words are one of the most important ones because they should be simple to understand, and at the same time communicate the right information. Also, it should not be too many words and sentences as this can make it confusing and hard to read. Spotify is a perfect example of how to make a good interactive design, in my opinion. The intent of Spotify, as they explain, is to “unlock the potential of human creativity” by allowing the artist to show their art/music, and fans have the opportunity to listen, enjoy, and be inspired by it. I truly believe Spotify fulfill its purpose; I know people who listen to music and it inspires them to paint or dance. I also know people who started posting music on Spotify a while ago, and today they are getting more known for each day that goes by!

Virtual Sketchbook 1
Part 1 - Writing and Research:
La Sagrada Família, designed by the architect Antoni Gaudí was started in 1882 and is still under construction and is assumed to be finished around 2026. It is a Catholic cathedral located in Barcelona, Spain.
5 new facts about La Sagrada Familia/architect:
It has been under construction for over a century.
Gaudí, the architect, is buried in a tomb on the underground level of the Sagrada Familia.
Builders of the Sagrada Familia are immortalized in stone.
It is the tallest religious building in Europe.
The interior ceiling mimics trees.
Sagrada Familia is extremely famous, and I have seen it before, so I knew a lot about it before doing this assignment; therefore, my initial view of this building has not changed. It is an architectural icon, and the inside is full of spirituality. I have looked at the magnificent ceiling multiple times before, but it is only after doing this assignment that I can see something different. I know the Sagrada Familia is inspired by nature, and it can be seen everywhere in the building, but I only now can see the interior ceiling mimicking trees and branches.

Part 2 - Art and Writing:
Tumblr media
This is a painting I made inspired by a picture I found on Pinterest. When I painted this picture, I had recently moved away from my home country and was having a hard time away from my friends and family. Therefore, painting this was an escape from the world and finding something to enjoy. I will say this is a beautiful painting. I am not saying it is painted beautifully, but every time I look at it, it gives me a feeling of enjoyment and happiness; therefore, I believe it is a beautiful painting.
Part 3 - Writing a Self-Portrait:
When I go to see art I start by looking; then, I try to describe what I see. Lastly, I try to interpret it, give it a meaning, and express the feelings I get by looking at the art. All this I learned over time. I have learned to look, describe, and explain what I see so I can try to see the art from the artist’s point of view and see what the artist is trying to tell us.
I am a 20-year-old girl, half Mexican and half Norwegian, and I speak Spanish, Norwegian, and English fluently. My mom and dad met while working at Disney World in Orlando; they married and moved to Norway, where I was born and raised. My family and I moved to Florida from Norway (almost two years ago). I love traveling and I have been lucky enough to travel to a few countries in Europe. I love hanging out with my friends and family. Before moving to Florida, I danced five times a week, and I loved it. Dancing was my passion, it was a fun journey, and I have danced for as long as I can remember. I like to hang out with my friends, go to the beach, and shop at the amazing shopping malls in my free time here in Florida. I am a very hard-working person, and I take schoolwork too seriously at times. What makes me unique is that I really enjoy learning new things, and I am constantly seeking out new opportunities, even though I am a shy person.
