Angels and Demons by Dan Brown: Review Tour
Tumblr media
Having really enjoyed "The Da Vinci code", I was happy to find out that Dan Brown has other books. I borrowed "Angels and Demons" from a friend. So, this it turned out into. Conspiracy and peril blend in one of the finest mysteries I've ever read. Dan Brown has built a world that is rich in mesmerizing detail, and I could not get enough of it. Mr Brown, I am your fan.
Angels & Demons is a story about a man named Robert Langdon. He is a man who loves “art, symbology, codes, secret societies” and isn’t sure of his faith if you could say he has any at all.
As I already read The Da Vinci Code, I could decipher that Brown's recipe for success is simple: wake Langdon in the middle of the night and send him to some mysterious mission in a European capital, that starts with a guy murdered in a weird way. Team him up with a woman, sorry “beautiful woman” who's somehow related to the victim. Together, they find out a lot of surprising things, mostly having to do with Christianity and secret brotherhoods. It ends well, with Langdon and the woman in love.
The book, and perhaps the movie, is entertaining. But many consider it is also malicious. Barring the similarities with another book, there are quite a lot of inaccuracies, tons of illogical things, time that runs too slow (the whole plot in less than 24 hours) and those obvious "thriller traps". Oh, you've gotta hate those. You can't get the stitched book out of your hands. You learn to eat, wash dishes, walk around, climb to busses, everything, with the book in front of your eyes.
Imagery in the novel is used very successfully. The protagonist, Robert Langdon, Leonardo Vetra, Vittoria Vetra, Camerlengo Carlo Vetrensca, Captain Chartrand and Maximilian Kohler are described with all their experiences and history.
The imagery of churches is also well-depicted. The structure of ambigrams is so well described that the reader can easily imagine how it must look like. The scenes in the novel, of the murdered and branded Cardinals are ghastly, but very well imaged. The process of the Conclave and Papal laws are expounded. The higher-level intrigues are discussed so that an amateur man can appreciate it well.
Dan Brown’s Angel and Demons makes us ask a lot of questions to our own self. It makes us accept the hidden universal truth that may one be born to any religion, one may practice any religion, At the end we all reach at the same point, where one seeks the truth which we consider to be the greatest thing for ourselves.

5 movies that an Engineer should watch
They are weird. They are the nerds. They are the people who are last picked for the cricket team. They are socially awkward. They lock themselves in their room for hours. Then why I chose engineering? Why I chose to be a part of that freaky group of maniacs?
Tumblr media
A similar dilemma arises when B.Tech students tend to reconsider their decision of choosing engineering. Course being herculean, motivation being scarce and still not much in the pocket at the end of the month.
And the answer is that everyone cannot be an engineer. Or let me just rephrase it and here it goes-everyone isn’t so smart to be an engineer.
An engineer may awake in the midmorning and before opening eyes, fragment of thoughts may begin to coalesce into ideas. To be an engineer, one requires a certain type of intelligence that cannot be found in marketing, media or banking sector. You need to be creative like an artist, and detailed like an accountant. It’s a specialty that requires using both the left and right brains.
If you are still not convinced through my words and still searching for inspiration to trigger your spirits I believe a good movie can not only take your mind off your problems but also just might provide you a new brighter perspective towards life.
Concretely, no genre resonates more with people than cinema. Movie storytelling takes us inside deeply flawed, three dimensional characters, whose key moments of achievement, betrayal cognizance remind us of our own potential and frailty. It takes us inside the skin of people quite different from our selves and to places different from our routine surroundings.
Here are five must watch movies for engineers that will provide a closer look at the corrosive effect of power and money, potential of mind and knowledge, temptation and ambiguities which we are bound to face and need of perseverance and hope in taking right decisions.
The Exam
Tumblr media
It is a brilliantly presented work of art which captivates viewers and keeps them engaged. It's often the simplest concepts that can make for the best movies and with Exam everything boils down to one little piece of blank paper. It doesn't get much simpler than that. Eight candidates for a highly desirable corporate job are locked together in an exam room and given a final test with just one question. The eight of them are left in the room with a security guard, while a clock runs down for eighty minutes. But not all is what it seems, and things get messy quickly. Often, we find ourselves in situations in which there is no obvious way out. In such conditions skills like maintaining composure, working in team, taking initiative, thinking out of the box and most importantly attention to detail etc. The movie demonstrates them with near perfection. Exam is a mental tease that requires you to think from beginning to end.
The Social Network
Tumblr media
The super-hot movie about how Facebook was born. Cynosure being the mega-multiple lawsuits that almost immediately emerged amongst the partners involved. The movie is a must see for engineers with spirit of entrepreneurship. The movie provides an elaborate case study of how joint ventures between friends and partners can turn out to be disadvantage. The movie beautifully demonstrates unspoken bonds of friendship. And most of important lessons of all that is money, status and fame can’t buy love or more specifically happiness. The movie tells you what dreams are made of. Every student can make it big, but the road to success is not going to be easy. Also, the legal drama behind the actual story of the Facebook foundation is well portrayed and worth watching.
The Martian
Tumblr media
It is one the best science fiction movie. It’s truly a breath of fresh air because during the day-to-day struggles of being a person, it’s nice to have a reminder that humans have done some really impressive things. Film about pushing the limits of innovation and celebrating our past. It’s hard to hate something so positive. During a manned mission to Mars, the protagonist is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But he has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet with limited supply and time on an unforgiving terrain, conditions which would destroy all hopes of survival of any normal man. The astronauts course of action which leads to his successful rescue prove the importance of never giving up.
Good Will Hunting
Tumblr media
If you have never seen Good Will Hunting, you are insane. I saw this movie in 2007, and actually hated myself for waiting ten years to see it. How can you not be inspired by the story of genius coming in surprising packages and places? Film unfolds events of a mathematician’s life a genius who suffered a clamorous childhood. The movie can be your unforgettable experience you can allow your psyche to get inspired by telling it what exactly it like to follow your dreams. It tells us that there can be no happiness if all that we are worried about is happiness. The same is true for success as well. Similarly, worrying about your future isn’t going to improve your present. Therefore, it is always better to lead life in the present moment; because in the end, what matters is the journey, and not the destination.
3 Idiots
Tumblr media
Most of movie has a meaning. But 3 Idiots is a little different. It is a meaning which has a movie. An undeniable gem of a cinema revolving around two friends are looking for their long-lost companion. They revisit their college days and recall the memories of their friend who inspired them to think differently. Students can learn a great deal from this movie like only hurdle in your path is a bad attitude, it requires extraordinary efforts to achieve extraordinary success. And above never forget to create memories with people you love. It teaches students the truth of life and also says something very powerful i.e., chase excellence and success will follow you. You must keep walking on your path. This movie will never be forgotten by everyone especially for those who had learned a lot of lessons from it. This movie will serve as one of the lights of our long journey in life. It's still a long way to go and we may encounter challenges that'll block our way. But despite all of these, we should always bear in mind that God is the best companion that will never leave us and will lead us the right path to success
The human life is one of learning and experiencing, Engineers are the one who dare to choose to it as their profession, Engineers have a unique quality of picking up ideas and grabbing knowledge from most unorthodox sources. I’ve focussed on movies that I have watched multiple times and would enjoy watching again, especially if introducing them to someone new. In India, while our munnis are getting ‘badnaam’ and sheilas are getting ‘jawaan’, the world of cinema has been creating masterpieces. These are the kinds of inspirational movies that all engineers should have sitting on their shelves. All you have to do is grab some popcorn, watch the movie, and imbibe some wonderful lessons from them. Therefore, these movies will be definitely an educating and fun source of inspiration one needs.

New Horizon
Tumblr media
Few years back, with college students stressing about exams, scrapping pennies to buy their weekly supply of magi and losing themselves in virtual world of social network, starting a company would have been the last thing on their minds. They wondered as they pondered over the possibility of entrepreneurship in college life.
When we speculate on college, questions like what to wear, how do students manage in common bathroom and how often do they party, grapple our minds. But actually we are surpassing the sun but dwelling in dark.
One trait found common between eminent companies like Google, Apple, Microsoft and Facebook is that all these have been founded by people ageing from twenty to twenty six. Is this just a coincidence or harbor a deep reason behind it ?
Now coming back to the question why is college period the best time for diving into the ocean of entrepreneurship. From getting free assistance from professors to possessing a build in network among students, there will never be more availability of resources and opportunities. Apprentices have freedom to create their own work schedule. Thus, there is more room for their entrepreneurship ambitions.
In the world where every head is buzzing with innumerable ideas, very few of them get appreciated. According to a research, only one in five million unfunded startup end up making millions.
It is important to master the nuts and bolts of technology, finance and marketing. But understanding the temperament and outlooking opinion of people is equally decisive. So, catering to the needs, colleges and universities are making possible efforts to apprise the minds of youth by propounding entrepreneurship clubs and committees, which provides zeal to students to make their ideas successful by initiating ardent desire that would do a change in society.
The idea of startup might look luring but if ventured without knowing the crux, it might have many pitfalls. Everyday comes with a new challenge. An aspiring entrepreneur may not sleep peacefully, eat peacefully and work peacefully. He has to learn from his mistakes by realizing the pros and cons and setting up intermediate milestones in regular intervals, keeping watch on his finance. If you are not getting cold feet on surmounting the challenges, then there is no looking back in the journey of becoming an thriving entrepreneur.
