Post Production Mastery Journal
This class was different than the other ones I have taken here. I felt confused at times and thought we needed more time to learn what it takes to become good editors. Using avid was a throwback for me since I used it in my undergrad. There where many changes since I hadn't used it in years though. Those changes threw me off especially since I am used to using other editing software.
The class taught me how to work with avid better but did not make me like it at all.I feel we missed some time in the class and did not spend much time in the dubbing stage. There was so much more I was hoping to learn that I am having a hard time explaining. Rob was a great teacher and fun to be around. He cared about what he taught and really knew what made a good film. We were challenged and had to really think about what we wanted the film to be.
There where aspects of editing that I did not know about before this class such as the DIT and how many formats a film is delivered in. All of the technical stuff was so much at the beginning and I felt like the first assignment needed to come later. I do understand the need to find out what we know, but most people who don’t edit professionally would not know that material.
In all, I had a good time. I would like to come back a few days and take a few more of the classes to get a better understanding of avid and its workflow. It’s a different beast than final cut or adobe but something major studios use and a program we must have knowledge of.

Production Mastery Journal
I enjoyed my time in production this month. It was a great challenge coming off of the first shoot in pre-production. The whole class spent so much time working on the first shoot that we were behind going into the second one. By putting to much focus on the first shoot we lacked when it came time to prepare for the main film. It was great that the film was shot on location was great because we didn't have to build anything and it looked better on the screen.
Being on location for three days and then in the soundstage for another really was a great experience. While at the drive-in I was able to see what it was like to be out somewhere that had established rules, people working there, and really valuable property that we had to put back just the way it was. Leading the art department was great because I was able to be creative and also have a great deal of responsibility. Leading the team of six was great because they were able to take direction and take charge whenever necessary.
What was so great about being the production designer was being able to work closely with the director and DP. Being in every meeting and every location scout was great, even if it took away from the time I got to spend with family. There were some frustrating things during this time, such as not being able to communicate clearly all the time with the DP. That was hard because when problems came up and they had something to do with art, we would get looked at or talked about. Things would have gone smoother if we would have talked about it on the first scout, but it seemed they did not see the importance of art and want to have those discussions. We had to come to them instead of them coming to us with problems.
Other than that, it was a great experience. I learned to communicate better and sometimes just sit back and watch. Even in a key position, my role was to give the director what she wanted, so I learned to not over think things and just let it come up naturally. I always had a backup plan of materials on standby just in case we needed them on set. I hope to work in the art department again in the future and look forward to making new projects with my class.

For this journal post, I was charged with analyzing a short film that I watched outside of class. The film I choose to analyze was called "Video", written and directed by Randy Yang. The logline of this film for me, if it had one, would be "Two friends come face to face with the awkward truths about prejudice and race and record it with unforeseen consequences". The theme I would have for this film would be it's sometimes difficult to see what others think. The genre would be drama because of the steep and difficult elements the film goes at. The tone is serious with a bit of humor in the beginning. The inciting incident of this film is while walking home to young African American women see a middle-aged Caucasian woman, stopping to degrade a black homeless man asking for change on the street. While speaking to a man about why he should move to another street to beg and why he is amounting to nothing in her eyes. The two women record the women throughout her rant on the man. The woman see's the two recording the video and asked them to stop, once they refuse and say they will put it on the internet she starts to offer them money in exchange for not putting the video up. The first plot point is the argument the Caucasian woman has with the African American homeless man on the street. In this plot point, we see the prejudice the woman has against the man and this leads into the discussion with the two young women over the video. The second plot point is the discussion the two young women have as they are waiting for the middle-aged women to come back with their money. In this conversation, the two argue over whether they should still post the video after she gives them the money or to not post the video and just take the money. This leads to a fight between the two young women in the street that might change their friendship. The mid-point happens when the three women are walking to the bank to get the money. The camera focuses on the two black women as they follow and the emotions that they are feeling towards the older lady and themselves without any dialogue. The climax of the film is the fight at the end between the two young women. One wants to post the video while the other wants to be fair and delete the video for the money. While trying to take the phone from her friend the girls start fighting and this leads to then on the ground with the older women coming in to break it up. The resolution of the film comes when the friend that wanted to post the video walks away in anger. As the other one gets up, she remembers what her friend said about the lady only seeing them as black and not important. She gets up and does not take the money, instead, she asks the women what she really sees her as and after a few short answers, the women finally says and a young black girl. The denouncement of the film is the girl that didn't want to post the video walking away and leaving the older women standing in the street. We don't get a final answer on what happens after that, but we can tell by the tears in her eyes and silence that she is confused and looking for a way to process all the events and statements that were just said to her. The production design in this film was minimum is any at all. This film was shot on a few blocks in an urban upscale neighborhood. They used the houses and stores that were around them to achieve the urban city look they were going for. For the costumes, they want for a professional look for the older Caucasian woman. She was in a nice professional green dress that could be worn to a formal party or a nice walk around the city. For the two African American women, they chose more laid-back jeans and shirts for them. To me, they distinguished the two by having the one who liked to fight and wanted to put the video out in a loose tank top and the other one in a tighter shirt with light-colored words on it. The Cinematography on this film was unique in that it was shot in one take with no cuts. They used natural light that blended in with the actor's choice of makeup and costume. The whole film was handheld and that made it a little hard to watch sometimes. When they moved up to the older women ahead of the two younger women and when they shot the women from the front the footsteps were noticeable because of the jumpiness of the camera. I thought the composition of the characters was great in that we never left them throughout the film. We always saw them throughout the film and that gave us time to really get to know them and how they thought and acted. The sound of this film was all diegetic. We only heard the characters speaking and the things that were around them. The editing had good pacing with no cuts in the whole film. With the film being all one take some scenes lasted too long. This gave us time to really see the characters emotional state and get to know them. Some of the things I would and am including in my film next month are the use of natural resources as my production design. That was the reason I told the producers about the drive in as that would take much of the stress of building things and would save us money on material. Some of the practical issues facing my team can be overcome by pulling resources from our class. For example, instead of using copyrighted posters from old movies, I can make posters of movies done in my class from my classmates.

For my latest assignment, I recently watched the short film Brian Divided by Josiah Haworth, Joon Shik, and Joon Soo. This film about a man on a date with the two personalities in his brain going to war over how to talk to the lady. This film mixes humor with real emotion. This was an animated film so they played around with the colors and sounds to match the moves.
It was a very fast paced film with much action but held a great story. They stuck to a basic plot line of a nervous guy on a date with a woman way out of his league. He is nervous and his two senses try and help with navigating the date while messing it up. In the end, they both notice as she walks out of the date and work together to save the date.
The editing was spotless and transitioned from the inside of the brain to the outside seamlessly. The sound really puts you in the restaurant with the two main characters and you got a great sense of the moods. The cinematography was great for an animated film. They were able to exaggerate the looks and the lighting perfectly. It felt like the live action movie “The Mask”.
A film similar to this is  “Inside Out”. I believe this was made before that film and could very well have served as the inspiration for that film. The film gave me a sense of a normal happy ending with the twist at the end of going into the woman's mind and seeing what she was thinking. Her brain fell in love and made her act goofy and fall in love which, in turn, caused the other brain to panic.
This is a student film and there are little things that could have been better such as the voices being better recorded. That is the little thing I saw out of what I thought was a perfect film.
