this is a longshot and i don’t know if anyone would like this but me, BUT. how cool would it be if this gen we got a more nuanced perspective on nefera and the relationship between her and cleo????? to my knowledge in the first gen nefera just Kind Of Sucked and Was Evil. and as much as i love that nefera and how much she was a campy mean girl, it would be really interesting to have a generation that dives more into how the expectations placed on nefera as heir to the throne/the pressure of being the golden child (and as such fearing constantly losing her position and her father’s favor). cleo and nefera definitely both struggle due to their upbringing (just think about everything with nefera’s birthmark!) and diving deeper into nefera’s perspective would be super interesting. if this gen wanted to get really crazy i’d be curious to see a version of their relationship where nefera IS trying to be a good older sister to cleo, but a combination of her not understanding cleo’s struggles, nefera still valuing their father’s approval over being a better ally, and cleo being set up by their father to view nefera as competition for his affection combine to create a rockier relationship where cleo is actively rebuffing nefera trying to reach out, instead of their g1 vibe where nefera torments cleo

for as pretty and high quality as the new monster high series is, it is a shame that the animation clearly being more expensive leaves the school as a whole looking kind of empty. like the webisodes cost 3 dollars to produce, but because of that they could at least pump out a bunch of generic monster designs to put in the halls. so far in the new series it feels like only the main characters attend monster high, you never seem to see a crowded cafeteria or a bunch of monsters walking between classes, which does make the school feel more lifeless :(

Alright as a latine is time to talk about the g3 Lagoona thing

Yes, she is a Spicy Latina estereotype but that isn't the problem here actually

Let me explain: the spicy latino character was born from a white perspective of what a latino woman is: loud, agressive, obnoxius and, of course, "exotic and caliente" (khe chucha-)

And here's a thing: I really love seeing a latino character beat the shit out of someone, as a very feisty and many times "agressive" type of person that just so happens to be chilean. I have written latino characters that fall under the spicy latino archetype because I find it fun and as a way to reclaim the label by giving them depth without taking away "the spice"

And this is a normal sentiment I see with many of my peers and other latinos online: we are proud about our energy, our party spirit, the united sentiment against white knight gringos, our dances and our cultural diversity from family to family (I sadly dont, part of my ancestry was french and they were assholes-)

But also, this g3 Lagoona make many latines, uncomfortable. Is it because she is feisty and agressive? Not for me at least.

The thing that makes it weird is that it was written by a white dude on a suit thinking that writting "I'm like chili mango, I'm sweet and I'm spicy" was a good idea like what the fuck

And is really sad cause I really love the song actually, this thing is what you listen on the radio or at a party on the background. And the "soy una fiera with razor sharp teeth" is my favorite verse cause it already shows you a big part of her character.

I love the idea of Lagoona being a cute, telenovela and romance enjoyer while also being a bit of a menace that can kill you in second. But I cannot ignore the part where, at the end of the day, this probably wasn't written by a latine person doing it for the sake of reapropiating the estereotype, but the actual idea that a white man has of us.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe there was a sensitivity writer in there that told them how to explore a spicy latino character without reducing them to only that and allow her to grow and learn new things. But without being sure, it was probably someone who said "I'm latino" and then is a 4th gen inmigrant that has only lived on the USA or europe.

Anyway, I'm snatching her character for my rewrite you'll see soon

with all the emphasis on lagoona having unrealistic expectations around romance….. REALLY manifesting that if we must get gil, the arc is about her romanticizing and ignoring the problems in the relationship (because they’re in love! everything has to work out!) before finally taking off her rose colored glasses and realizing the truth (gil is The Worst)

is it bad to say i kind of like clawdeen’s budget look more than her signature 😭. like i know a lot of patterns and whatnot are part of her style but the animal print on the moon pattern felt like it took it a bit far? the toned down look makes me appreciate her outfit a lot more

my headcanon going into the animated series is that the reason clawdeen keeps saying “my werewolf [blank]” is that she’s overcompensating because she just discovered that she’s a werewolf and is trying to keep drawing attention to it because she’s insecure, especially give that all(?) of the other werewolves at monster high would’ve just been raised immersed in monster and werewolf culture
