I’ve just gotten home from a wonderful night with James (my family friend), his girl friend, and two of her friends. It was a beautiful summer’s night spent at a French restaurant with amazing tapas. I also, in the summer breeze, shared a flourless chocolate cake with Ri Le and wolfed down some Halal cart with Amir Lankarani. Yesterday I laughed my way into the night with Alex Sadler and Jonathan Brown, talking about random bad American movies and talking about how single we all are and singing along to a live cover of the Lumineers. I also had a heart-to-heart with Katherine Hu about our fears, hopes, and excitements about our first semester at HLS, and I shared some green tea Lady M crepe cake with Claire Tao. The day before that I ate some bull frogs with Hao Qi, Wanzhen and Charles in Flushing. I am grateful for friends who are able to listen, take me in for who I am, and celebrate and hold up each other.

Today we had a great, productive day. I think that my attitude towards snorkeling has changed. I am no longer as aversed to it because today I was able to get my own snorkel mask, which I will treasure for a long time to come because after I use it I do not feel nauseous and do not have a headache. Today we went spearfishing, made some new friends, filleted those fish, and had hot pot. In general it’s been a wonderful day!

Haha my day’s been good too! I saw a documentary called Hospital directed by Frederick Wiseman that recorded the day-to-day minutiae of a busy Manhattan hospital emergency room in the 60’s (this is with Rosalind’s film club). I quite liked it! I think it’s a bit disguised as this piece of observational documentary/direct cinema but in actuality contains such dramatic narrative and manipulative editing. And especially in a moment like the one we’re in rn it was a challenge to “see” death and illness in a hospital institutional context and not look away. Then had played some tennis b/c my family has decided to take up tennis lessons as a family lmao then read some tings made dinner then watched this incredible silent film from 1935 called New Women which I really loved! Also my mango wine is now fermented! We had a lil wine-opening ceremony 🦋
Also saw this yesterday outside of a Buddhist temple and meant to send the photo to Aim! It made me smile.
My mother, sister and I also went out for brunch to this vegan cafe, and then we visited a quilt museum. There we learned about Hawaiian pattern (reflective symmetrical pattern which resembles water ripples). we learned that Queen Liliukalani spent much time quilting when she was under house arrest. We also learned that the Hawaiian flag was banned after the kingdom was overthrown and it wasn’t until the US annexed Hawaii that the flag was allowed to be flown again. In the meantime Hawaiian people created quilts to keep honoring their kingdom.

I had a dream that we all had wings and could fly, but if we were feeling down or unenergetic then we would fall to the ground. At first the camera lens would be trained on one main character, but then, seamlessly would change its focus onto a different person. In this case the person who the camera lens changed to is Claire. It was just stunning because Claire used her skills to explore this new landscape. The ceiling of this new space we found looked like the grand canyon, and she would float up to the ceiling and look through each of the crevice, just curious about this new world and her new power. I think there’s something unsettling about changing the main character of the film so unceremoniously.

Panel on Art Criticism and Power in the Art World
Antwaun Sargent - when introducing the work of the new artists the first question should be what they are trying to show with their work so in that way it's more of a conversation instead of just a shut down critique (think back  othe writing MFA seminar system of not letting the creator speak) - And also being aware that sometimes critics don't take the work seriously (to the point of factual inaccuracy) and that's part of why certain artists (especially artists of color) will be reinforced to operate with their communities
Now - it's no longer the older system (however sexist, racist it is, etc) Self hype versus institutional hype
He doesn't think the institutions' powers have diminished that much at all (even if its readership has decreased)
What's happening online is praise and curation, and un-priase by omission - people are being lazy - it's an argument (disagreement, expand, etc) = it's lazy! "tell us what to think, we will not do anything beyond what you say" - this implies that the critic should have a creative role
No one's modeling the negative critic, but there's a lot of negativity negative criticism that has been used by the auction house to sell Jeff Koons - even that will be appropriated and used

New material age - metals like cobalt for battery You can trace human history through what has been taken out of the ground, through metals
So now in all of our best batteries the key elements are lithium and cobalt, stacked one on top of each other; in electric cars there can be up to 5-6 kg of cobalt. In the very beginning there was copper extraction - because there were actual copper sticking out of the ground. And in the the beginning cobalt was retained because it often hangs out with copper or nickel, and those are heavily mined metals. And actually up until the 50’s when mining companies got cobalt they put it in the waste pile because they didnt want to disrupt the already low price of cobalt. Because there was no demand for it in the market.
They mentioned the use of machine learning to find out where cobalt is. It is estimated that our current supply of cobalt will last us only around less than 10 years. And how their data is very sparse right now and very diverse. But that the machine learning would be able to interpret the data and eliminate the biases of someone like a human geographer/navigator.
