This Peanuts strip fucks me up every time I see it.
Tumblr media
This was the last appearance of Peppermint Patty and Marcie before Charles Schulz's death a few weeks later. As far as I'm aware, it's the last time he ever drew them.
With that context in mind, this already pretty eerie feeling strip becomes an absolute doozy.
I'm already someone who has a hard time with the concept of death, that one day I won't be able to think anymore, or draw anymore. That one day I'll die and my creations will die along with me. So this strip throws me into soul searching existential terror every time I come across it.
It's easy to interpret it as introspection about being at the end of your life. That this is a man coming to terms with his imminent death through his art. I think that part might be intentional, or at least it happened subconsciously. The subtext is definitely there. Schulz is using Peppermint Patty as a mouthpiece for his feelings on his imminent passing, using an abruptly ended football game as a metaphor. There's no fanfare at the end, no grand finale, nobody shakes your hand and says "good game". You did have fun, but... is that really it? The way the art becomes rougher and shakier as it goes on just adds to it. Schulz was probably getting emotional finishing this strip because he knew his time was coming and this was the last time he'd ever draw Peppermint Patty and Marcie.
But if you overthink it, the way I have when it puts me into a mood. If you take all that and pair it with the imagery and dialogue of the strip, along with this being the final appearance of a character Schulz had a lot of affection for, if I can get a little Creepypasta-y for a second, this becomes one of the most haunting pieces of existential horror ever made. It's like a Peanuts equivalent of those Garfield strips where he wakes up in a world where he doesn't exist.
Simply put, it seriously reads like Peppermint Patty herself is dead, and is being ushered into the afterlife by an apparition of Marcie.
Let me lay it out best I can.
Peppermint Patty is in an empty, raining void. For the majority of the strip, the ground isn't even there. Patty is just sitting here in nothingness as she keeps calling out for Charlie Brown, who does not answer, because he is not there. No one is. Marcie appears out of nowhere, just standing there behind her. She tells Patty it's getting dark and she should come with her. The way her tone reads, with the ellipses, it feels unnatural, it has none of Marcie's usual snark. As if she's the angel of death come to bring Peppermint Patty to the afterlife. Patty becomes still and expressionless, you can barely make out her face anymore. The art becomes rougher and shakier, almost distorted. Patty is barely recognizable by the final panel as the dread of her situation sinks in. She realizes her end is here and reflects on it, barely able to comprehend it. She asks the apparition of Marcie if they "had fun", as if she's questioning if the life she lived was worth it. She did have fun, but she thought it would be different. She thought there would be more to it. But this is it. It's over. "Marcie" leaves as Peppermint Patty is left to grapple with this in her final ever appearance in a Peanuts comic strip.
Charles Schulz is dying, and he's taking Peppermint Patty with him.

Tipped off about the prominent role of the Little Red-Haired Girl, Donna is very much looking forward to seeing The Peanuts Movie. She thinks there’s a real possibility that, this time, Charlie Brown will muster the courage to get off his bench and speak to her at last.
November 6, 2015
(Vanity Fair) – Donna Johnson Wold’s hair, which was once, in her own words, “violently red,” has long since faded to the white you’d expect of an 86-year-old grandmother.
Having lived her whole life in Minneapolis, Wold now resides in a nursing home, where she has recently been undergoing physical therapy. Every day, her husband, Al, drives five miles to visit her so the two of them can sit in the sunshine together and reminisce.
One of Mrs. Wold’s fondest memories happens to be of a relationship she had with another man more than half a century ago. She still has a few reminders of him and that time: a scrawled-upon 1950 desk diary, a music box, and a large collection of decades’ worth of Peanuts comic strips, cut out from the pages of The Minneapolis Star Tribune, many of which revolve around a pretty redhead.
The strips have a special significance for Mrs. Wold. Around the peak of its popularity, Peanuts was published in 2,600 newspapers in 75 countries in 21 languages with a readership of 355 million. And yet, every now and then, it was a secret romantic correspondence, imbued with a hidden meaning only truly understood by its creator and one other person.
“It was the story of his life and mine,” Mrs. Wold says.

Did they bring a Rare Character Back into newest Peanuts Special?
So that trailer for Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical dropped today and it had some great moments shown in it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OG Peanuts designs used for Charlie Brown and gang when they're younger.
Tumblr media
This Peppermint Patty and Marcie moment.
Tumblr media
Brown Sibling Cuteness
Tumblr media
Sally being an adorable Horse Girl.
But the thing that caught my attention the second time viewing it was one of the kids at the camp.
Before I bring it up, here's a quick history lesson:
Tumblr media
This is Dolores. She only appeared in some educational filmstrips from the 70s that are pretty rare. One had been discovered a while ago, hence where this shot came from.
Tumblr media
And here's a random shot from the trailer. Note the girl next to Sally that isn't Eudora. Then compare her to this shot of Dolores from one of the filmstrips.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tan/brown skin. Freckles. Black hair with curly pigtails. Purple shirt, black shorts, and white shoes.
Did they bring back Dolores??? If they did, then that is AWESOME!!
Here are more shots where she appears.

A Peanuts board book based around a Thanksgiving theme.Where the last one I found had Charlie Brown hanging out with Rerun he’s oddly absent from this one but in place is a wild mix of characters all over the history of the series.Take for example how we have Eudora, the original Patty, and Peppermint together. It can be taken a step further for according to the back this was produced in 2020.

Thomas Headcanons: Molly
Tumblr media
Another D16 (LNER #8783) actually made a cameo appearance in the RWS, in the story Toby’s Seaside Holiday. My headcanon is that this engine and Molly are one and the same.
Tumblr media
This means that Molly was built in July 1923, and ended up becoming one of two D16s allocated to pull the Royal Train - the Royal Family’s holiday residence at Sandringham was located slap bang in the middle of ex-Great Eastern territory.
Molly was originally unnamed when built, but gained the name Royal Phoenix in connection with her special duties. She didn’t gain the name of Molly until a few years later, but it wasn’t until shortly before she entered NWR service that that name became official.
Although the RWS shows 8783 with a nameplate, the real engine was never named, although most fans refer to them as Royal Claude. There is also an ongoing project to build a replica of 8783, with the builders intending to name it Phoenix. So I simply mashed the two names together.
Molly was also used as a guinea pig for various modifications to the D16 class, including a vacuum ejector, an extended smokebox, a Belpaire firebox, and a larger, superheated boiler. These modifications were later applied to the rest of the class.
Molly’s Royal duties were suspended during the War, and downsized considerably afterwards, as bigger engines became available to pull the Royal Train in East Anglia. She was still kept in immaculate condition, for use as a standby engine (remaining in apple green even after Nationalization), but from here on out, she mainly worked among the common engines.
She actually took her fade into obscurity surprisingly well, as the War had helped her realized that any job was better than none. Besides which, she’d never really cared much for being in the spotlight anyway, and she was glad not to be subjected to as much public scrutiny as she’d received as Royal Phoenix.
Molly was withdrawn from BR in August 1958, placed on the out-of-use line at Stratford Works, and stayed there for a full year before suddenly disappearing. Official records suggest she was scrapped, but in fact she’d been purchased for potential private preservation - wow, try saying that three times fast! - by someone who recognized her importance as Royal Phoenix, and hoped to restore her to working order.
Sadly, nothing came of this proposal, and Molly remained in storage for a number of years on her owner’s premises. This was then followed by a mere cosmetic restoration, and then being displayed at a number of public places. It was during one such exhibition in Cambridge, in 1970, that Molly was offered the chance of a full restoration by the NWR, along with the chance to work with them. Obviously she accepted this offer, and she arrived on Sodor a month later.
Molly’s restoration was completed in 1972, but she didn’t officially enter NWR service right away. This was because one of the conditions of her sale had been that her previous owner could keep her to fulfil some outstanding public display commitments. These resulted in high demand for Molly to provide additional motive power for several up-and-coming heritage railways.
Incidentally, Molly also gained her yellow livery (a slightly subtler shade than shown) during this restoration. She chose it herself, having been inspired by the dandelions she’d seen growing around her out-of-use siding at Stratford. This livery was derided by enthusiasts for being wildly inauthentic - and to be fair, it kind of was - but Molly’s usual response was that they could either have an inauthentically-coloured Claude Hamilton, or no Claude Hamilton at all!
Once all her various display and heritage commitments had been fulfilled, Molly finally entered NWR service in 1977. Although she was up for anything that needed doing, she was a little disappointed when her first job turned out to be hauling empty trucks - particularly because some of the other engines teased her for doing unimportant work.
As in canon, Thomas tried to make Molly’s trucks look important, by using tarpaulins to give the impression of a loaded train. This backfired when a signalman mistook Molly’s train for another one carrying important goods to Tidmouth Docks, and signalled her accordingly. This caused her to pass through Tidmouth Station, where her cover was blown - quite literally - in full view of a number of engines.
Fortunately, external circumstances helped to salvage the situation. As it turned out, Molly’s empty trucks were in fact urgently needed at the Docks, to be loaded with cargo from a diverted tramp steamer. Both Molly and Thomas were praised afterwards for their quick thinking and resourcefulness, and not wanting to risk getting into trouble by revealing what they’d actually been trying to do, the two engines simply went with it and accepted the praise. Neither of them have revealed the truth to this day.
Having briefly met Molly a couple of times in the past, Toby gets on well with her. In fact, he’s the only engine on Sodor who’s aware of her Royal connections, but they’ve both agreed not to tell anyone else - Molly wouldn’t like the attention, and Toby reckons nobody would believe him anyway.
The only thing that gives the game away is the fact that Molly still carries her Royal Phoenix nameplates. Nobody’s yet asked about them, but just in case, Molly’s cover is that they were simply an eccentric addition by her previous owner.

Tw: Death, Blood, Implied Gore
Happy Traintober, and happy reading ;)
Once, in a little valley of the Island of Sodor, before the Skarloey was the Skarloey Railway, there lived a timeworn steam engine named Cadogan. She was the first of her kind, known for her heartwarming whistles and the warmth of her vintage red color, Cadogan had seen many seasons cycle through the green hills of the island. She was a marvel of engineering, a pride of the station, most cherished by the little children who would wave to her as she puffed past, sending clouds of steam spiralling into the sky.
But as time marched on, her brilliance dulled. Technology advanced; newer, faster engines glided effortlessly along the tracks. Cadogan began to feel the gnawing fear that came with obsolescence, the relentless threat of the scrap yard looming over her. Whispers among the workshops grew louder, each echoing the unthinkable: “It’s time for Cadogan to retire.”
One crisp winter evening, as the sun dipped beyond the hills and cast long shadows over the rails, Cadogan sat in her shed, a heavy heart trapped within her iron frame. The fear of being dissolved into lifeless metal spurred something within her. The sound of the wheels against the tracks, the longing for the cheers of her passengers, it brought her to tears. The body she possessed could not accept her fate among piles of rust and decay. In a moment of desperation, Cadogan closed her eyes and wished with every ounce of steam in her boiler.
Suddenly, a warmth surged through her, igniting an ancient magic, a chance she never knew she had. In a flicker of golden glitter and a burst of steam, Cadogan transformed, her essence shifting from iron and steel into the flesh of a young woman. Her hair flowed like black smoke, and her eyes now gleamed with fire and life. Overjoyed but still filled with fear, Cadogan fled from her old life.
She raced through the misty woods, her heart pounding fiercely with newfound freedom, but the fear of being discovered still chased her. She was a creature of the tracks, yet here she stood, vulnerable in a world where she once was mightier than her human form could ever hope to be. It wasn't long before the townsfolk noticed a woman who looked almost exactly like her engine counterpart. They quickly realised it was Cadogan herself, trying to flee from the railway to Lady knows where. Some marvelled at her bravery to escape, but some believed she was an omen, a wraith signalling the end of the railway.
One fateful evening, weeks after her initial escape, Cadogan found herself at the edge of a bridge that loomed over a rushing river, the moon glowing white on the horizon. Questions swirled within her. Could she remain human? Would others accept a woman born from an engine? The doubts clawing at her mind twisted her heart into knots. Just then, a group of workers approached. They were armed with old tools and bows, faces twisted in disgust. They had come to reclaim the escapee of Sodor, a mission that included her fate as well.
Seeing the determination in their eyes, Cadogan understood the truth; they had come to take her back, to return her to the looming embrace of scrap. “No! I’m more than what they designed! I'm still useful! I don’t deserve this!!” she shrieked, desperation coursing through her veins. But they were resolute, pushing forward, and as her fear turned to rage, she was pressed to the edge of the bridge, heart pounding wildly.
With a sudden wave of anger, she scrambled to keep her distance, ready to leap into the freedom of the river below. They soon noticed her anger was turning into aggression, and saw she grabbed a huge stick and pointed it at them, backing away slowly. “I refuse to let you kill me! I’m getting across this damn bridge whether you like it or not!” So, the workers had no choice but to draw their bows. “Stay away from me!” she yelled, and in her turmoil, she felt an arrow pierce through her abdomen. In the fragile moment between horror and self-preservation, she felt herself fall back. Time froze as she lost her footing, falling into the depths below.
She screamed something wicked, a scream that could make ears bleed. The rushing waters greeted her with a cold embrace, and for a moment, she could breathe. Yet as she sank below the surface, the realisation struck her like an arrow. There was no escape from her own demise. She couldn't outrun her fate. Underwater and beneath the weight of her newfound humanity, she saw visions of tracks, glowing sickly warm in her memory, the laughter she had brought, the love she felt, the children who waved.
But alas, she couldn’t find her strength, the water paralysing her whole body. The world went dark for our Cadogan. But suddenly, a bright light flashed before her, a last wave of magic surged through her, resurrecting her spirit. She pulled herself from the abyss, thinking she could fly, but it was too late; the bridge, the lives above, and the hope she chased were irretrievably lost.
The workers had gone, leaving only the haunting echo of what could have been—a glimpse of a life forever marred by horror. Cadogan stepped onto the bridge, feeling lighter than ever before. She looked off to the side and saw her lifeless engine corpse, stuck between two huge rocks. She didn't even feel scared or shocked, she just stood there, and looking down on her body, saw the arrow... The arrow that had killed her, forever doomed to be lodged through her body.
She soon realised what she was—an engine dressed like a woman cast adrift, forever trapped on the isle that once adored her.
As the last curls of steam rose into the moonlit sky, Cadogan realised she was now alone and dead, not only an engine trying to escape but a creature of sorrow forged in the waters of loss. The only sounds that remained were the whispering wind that stirred between the trees, and the rushing of water over her body pressing against the silence of a bridge that would bear her grief for the ages.
But workers will tell you, on a full moonlit night, they can see the woman, running across the bridge, the arrow still lodged deep in her body, trying to pull it out. But she never does pull out the arrow, or reach the other side, for no matter the condition of the rails and bridge, she always slips and falls, screaming the same wicked screech as she did when she first fell and plunging into the water below.
