hi alice! could you talk a bit about incorporating tori and michael’s little storyline in volume 5? it’s so exciting to finally have on-page ace tori!

Well, I've felt for many years that Tori is asexual, which I subconsciously expressed in Solitaire. But that's not an identity I knew anything about when writing Solitaire, so it's never been canon. Heartstopper was the perfect place to make it canon and actually say the word. While it couldn't be a huge storyline due to how much space I have in the Heartstopper books, I'm really happy that it's there. I love Tori and Michael so so so much and getting to tell even a small part of their post-Solitaire story makes me very happy.

Also, aside from sexuality, I kind of love the 'are they dating or not' vibes of Tori and Michael. Are they dating? Are they friends? They're best friends but also maybe kiss or maybe they don't? They're soulmates and eternally bound together but they don't call each other boyfriend and girlfriend? Or do they? What is going on there?? I just enjoy the way they kind of baffle everyone around them.
