Chapter 2: The Journey

The journey begins with a long road and too many steps.

He goes, because of course he does, and when she is done retching, he helps her to her feet, drapes her chin over his shoulder as he hikes her trousers up for her.

‘I’m not an invalid,’ she protests, but it’s meek, too quiet. She sounds defeated and he hates it.

‘I know,’ he says, ‘but you are not well.’

‘It’s just a pregnancy.’

‘Bullshit,’ Vincent says.

 He feels her swallow against his shoulder, and they do not speak again. They climb back into the car in silence, she buckles herself in, picks at a granola bar, stares out of the window as he drives. He opens a bottle of water one handed, swallows a mouthful, and extends it to her. She refuses, settles herself into her seat and closes her eyes. He turns his gaze back to the empty wild before them, and the only sound is the rumble of the road beneath them.

Another AO3 thing I’m curious about, how do yall decide if something is good enough to read? Usually I follow a rule of 1 kudos for every 10 hits. One because it’s easy math and two it’s yet to fail me. Thoughts? Do you just go for it and pray it’s good?
