Just to clarify, there's a bill that would STOP credit card companies from controlling who's allowed to spend money on porn or "risque" (read: queer) content. Grace laughed. She dropped her voice and spoke in a murmur that made Mandy’s skin prickle. “Now he knows how much more he can charge for a cold drink, you might be right.”

Mandy smiled at her. Grace reached out as if she were about to touch her face, then let her hand drift back down. “I haven’t seen you around for a while. Did one of your Peaky Blinders do that to you?”

“What?” She touched her face. She sure hadn’t forgotten her bruises. She had just finished her first day back at work, where Mr. Burley had actually shrieked after his usual, “Good morning,” and Mr. Howes had turned her desk around “for better light” so that no one on the floor could see her face. Her shoulder ached fiercely, and a new pain in her lower back was letting her know her kidneys weren’t better yet either.

“No,” she finally answered Grace. “This was the work of a cop.”

Grace’s eyes went wide. She looked at Mandy like she was seeing her in a whole new light, and Mandy wasn’t sure she liked it. Grace’s lips parted as she scanned Mandy’s face, the stiff way she stood and held her arm at her side. “A cop? Which one?”

“I don’t want to brag, Grace, but it was more than one that did this.”

Grace stared at her and grinned, shaking her head. “I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone like you, Mandy. How about I get you another beer? On the house?”
