Violet watched Flint struggle with how best to respond to her observation, which silently confirmed her suspicions about the actual nature of his relationship with both of her biological parents. In her travels, she had heard conflicting stories about Thomas Hamilton's final days before Bedlam, and his subsequent imprisonment there. The accepted story was that her mother had been caught in an affair with a mutual friend that had driven him mad, but if there had been anything she learned from this journey was that no story was as black and white as it seemed.

And she knew what it was like to love unconventionally herself.

Moving to sit next to James, Violet explained, "The summer before I got the letter, I met a girl, she was so bright, beautiful, and determined. We both cared about each other deeply as well." She said, looking at him to see if he understood. "But her father caught us, sleeping under a willow tree and shipped her off to France to marry some aristocratic tool. Thankfully, my father is far more understanding about such things but there's not a day that goes by that the loss of her doesn't weigh heavy on me."

Moving her hand from his shoulder, she took his hand and squeezed it, softly saying, "I'm sorry, for what England took from you, they both must have loved you very deeply."
