favourite first watches of 2018 ♡ the wind (dir. victor sjöström, 1928)
man — puny but irresistible — encroaching forever on nature’s vastness, gradually, very gradually wresting away her strange secrets, subduing her fierce elements — conquers the earth! this is the story of a woman who came into the domain of the winds.

The film was shot by the great Leon Shamroy; the colour in Leave Her to Heaven is something I always refer to in my own films, from New York, New York to The Aviator. It’s a very strange film, very odd, very compelling. The first time I saw the picture was in the early 70s. I was sick, and I was up all night stuck in an apartment in L.A. I was watching films on and off, trying to get some sleep, and I was sort of half-asleep and there was this image that came up on the TV, kind of like an apparition. So, the images from this film, her face in this picture – the picture will always be suspended between me trying to get two very clear breaths really; it became like a hallucination dominated by Gene Tierney’s face, reflected in the windows seventeen stories up in L.A. Blue eyes, vibrant lipstick, and a strangely calm disposition.
There’s the scene in the beginning of Leave Her to Heaven when she’s on the train reading, and Cornel Wilde notices her. She’s staring at him. She just continues to stare and stare; it’s a really uncomfortable moment, an uncomfortably long time. He’s looking at her and he’s actually creating his own idealised version of her. That is who he falls in love with later on; his idea of her. What makes this so special, I think ultimately, is this very, very raw vulnerability that’s under this beautiful mask; something dark. Dark heart, broken heart, hiding behind an angel face. You see it in the eyes; even when she’s wearing the sunglasses, you can still see the eyes.
Her performance is like a person who’s really on the brink, she’s in a very dark place, you know? And in the end, you somehow though – after all these terrible things that she does – you still kind of feel for her, and ultimately, she controls the picture and everybody in the story; from the grave at the end. - Martin Scorsese, “Gene Tierney: A Forgotten Star”
Gene Tierney in Leave Her to Heaven (1945), which was 1 of 25 films inducted into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 2018. This curated database serves to preserve films that are considered to be the most influential in American history.
