The swans ring the bell to be fed at the Bishop’s Palace, Wells, Somerset.
The tradition of Swans on the Moat at The Bishop’s Palace( adjacent to Wells Cathedral) goes back to 1870’s when one of Bishop Hervey’s daughters first taught the swans to ring a bell at the Gatehouse for lunch to be fed to them by the caretakers who live in the gatehouse.
You can see the bell just beneath the window of the Gatehouse, with a rope hanging down for the swans to pull.
New generations of swans learn to ring the bell from their parents.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but if you can only read nuanced topics written by people who have experienced those events themselves, then your reading choices might be reduced quite a bit. That being said, it might be better for you to avoid books by old white men if you don't want to read those topics written by them, as SA and rape do happen irl and could appear in their stories
On another note, having the PoV of a rapist doesn't mean the author supports that at all (if anything, it was quite obvious to me that Ken Follett rather hated that particular villain). It's perfectly reasonable for a book to have "problematic" PoVs, they can be interesting and add a lot to the story
Instead of feeling ashamed she was overwhelmed by a sense of her own power. She had resolved not to let people make her a victim, and she had proved she could keep her resolution.
-Ken Follett, Pillars of the Earth
