The Draftery fig 02: Narrative Exhortations Essay by Athanasiou Geolas; Drawings and writing by Dan Wood, Anasthasia Geolas, Oliviu Lugojan-Ghenciou, Luke Pearson, Thomas Hillier
Tumblr media
6 x 8 in / 88 pp. / color digital / staple bound / edition of 90 / $8  SOLD OUT
"The second issue of The Draftery frames works by architects, artists, and writers alike as alternative models of architectural production. These works are concerned with how architecture is manifested on non-physical sites—how architecture is represented as graphic object rather than as spatial artifact. The authors examine narrative, whether political, ideological, or simply serving to disclose meaning, as an organizing principle in works that function as public exhortations."

Mind Games Geirthrudur Finnbogadottir Hjorvar, Noah Venezia (design)
4.7 x 6.7 in / 152 pp. / offset / paperback $10  SOLD OUT "Mindgames is constituted by four parts – ordered in alternating sequence – to form thirteen chapters in total. Each of the four sections holds a biographical account of its subject: Caligula, Henri Lefebvre, John Lennon and Halldór Laxness. The chapters can be read separately, as they have been conceived to be independent wholes, forming biographies that present portraits of associations rather than particular statements about individual lives. The text, however, is constructed to alternate rhythmically between the main motives. The motives in turn produce variations on particular themes as they modulate into different parts within the totality of the work as a whole. Mindgames was conceived as a way to enjoy information in the tradition of autodidacts of the past – but in a style which is commingled with a reverence towards traditional modes of archiving the world." Designed by Noah Venezia, Werkplaats Typographie, Arnhem / ArtEZ Institute of the Arts."

Perspecta 45: Agency Kurt Evans, Iben Falconer & Ian Mills (Eds.)
Tumblr media
9 x 12 in / 208 pp. / softcover $22  PURCHASE
Architecture has always been intimately intertwined with its social, political, and economic contexts; major events in world history have had correspondingly dramatic effects on the discipline. The Great Depression, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and Hurricane Katrina, for example, were all catalysts for architectural response and resulted in a diversification of the architect’s portfolio. Yet far too often, architects simply react to changes in the world, rather than serving as agents of change themselves.
Perspecta: The Yale Architectural Journal is a student-edited peer-reviewed academic journal published by the MIT Press and Yale School of Architecture, Yale University since 1952. This issue, Perspecta 45: Agency – edited by Kurt Evans, Iben Falconer & Ian Mills; designed by Zak Jensen & Mylinh Trieu Nguyen – takes a broader view, using the concept of agency to explore the future of architecture. The retreat from liability, the barricade of theory, and the silos of specialization have generated a field that is risk-averse and reactive, rather than bold and active. Instead of assuming that architects can only throw up their hands in despair, the editors of this issue of Perspecta invite them to roll up their sleeves and get to work. Prominent architects, scholars, and artists investigate how architects can become agents for change within their own discipline and in the world at large.
Contributors include Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen, Nader Tehrani, Ines Weizman, Jaime Lerner, Urban-Think Tank, Stefano Boeri, Peter Eisenman, Michael Osman, Darryl Collins, Vann Molyvann, Enrique Ramirez, Rania Ghosn, Victor van der Chijs, Bjarke Ingels, Jan Kempenaers, Andrew Shanken, Keller Easterling, Timur Galen, Perspecta 45 & Pierluigi Serraino, Thomas Auer, Joshua Vanwyck & Erik Olsen, Preston Scott Cohen, and Ariane Lourie Harrison."

"Log 26 draws together an array of writers who offer ideas for understanding, judging, inspiring, and making architecture. Circular Facts Mai Abu ElDahab
Tumblr media
5.9 x 10.6 in / 96 pp. / paperback $15  SOLD OUT
"Circular Facts is a collaborative endeavor between three of Europe's most progressive contemporary art organizations: Casco - Office for Art, Design and Theory, Utrecht; Objectif Exhibitions, Antwerp; and The Showroom, London, in partnership with Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen and Electric Palm Tree. The project acted as an informal think tank to discuss the role of small contemporary art organizations in the cultural field and how they envision their future in today's changing times while creating mutually supportive structures for the dissemination of artistic initiatives. Aiming to gather a spectrum of perspectives to explore the roles of specific projects, the multi-cultural group of contributors have produced essays that speak to their experiences within arts institutions, collaborative curatorial initiatives, and research networks. Contributions by Mai Abu ElDahab, Binna Choi, Emily Pethick, Heejin Kim, Anthony Huberman, Will Bradley, Miren Jaio and Leire Veraga, Anna Colin and others."

Guy de Cointet Marie de Brugerolle, Guy de Cointet
Tumblr media
6 x 9 in / 160 pp. / hardcover $34  PURCHASE
"Mentor to a generation of Californian Conceptualists and performance artists, Guy de Cointet (1934-1983) took language as a material from which to generate drawings, plays and performances. De Cointet collected phrases, words and even single letters culled from popular culture and literary sources, and scripted them as dialogues or props for plays inspired by the writings and homonymic compositional methods of Raymond Roussel: in the 1976 play At Sunrise... A Cry Was Heard, for example, a large painting depicting letters bisected by a white sash provides the dialogue of the lead actress, who recites its jumble of letters as if it were ordinary conversation. His drawings were often generated by geometric erasures of found text, leaving behind Concrete-style abstract patterns. A formative figure for Mike Kelley and Paul McCarthy during his tenure at the Otis Art institute, de Cointet is today in the process of being rediscovered; this timely monograph is the first overview of his enigmatic and influential oeuvre."
