The Artist’s Choice: Page 1
Art takes form in many different ways. It can become a masterpiece overnight, or a three-year project that finally pays off. Since the turn of the century, there has been a growing debate over how art is classified as successful; specifically, how an artist’s process affects the outcome of their art. An artist’s process can be anything: a specified step-by-step list of tactics to create a work, a single night of hastily throwing a work together, a week of planning thrown off by a single change in the idea, or creating whatever comes to mind. Artists and critics all over the world have argued for years over which process yields the most successful art, and whether or not the experience of the individual artist has an impact on that fact. So the question stands: what are the factors leading an artist to choose their style? The question leaves a lot of room for focus, but this essay will revolve around three types of artists and their processes, and the choices and factors that led them there. The first type of artist is the beginning artist. These are the artists that have just begun to figure out their style: what they want and don’t want in a work of art. They trend towards the step-by-step process. The second type of artist is the established artist. These are artists who have a lot of experience and recognition under their belts: they have already created hundreds of works and displayed their work in galleries. They have a following of admirers, or a specific type or art they are known for. These artists vary widely on the process they choose, but the majority trend towards the randomized process. Both processes provide equal opportunity for the stereotyped, formally educated artist; however, there are artists who are not stereotyped and did not receive a formal education. The third type, or self-taught artists, have a process all their own: it will be referred to as the homemade process. Self-taught artists received little to no formal artistic education: they could be anyone you see on the streets. Their process can be any combination of the two formal processes or something entirely different.
