It has officially happened enough times that like. I feel the need to make a formal post about it because good fucking god.
Jay Nakamura is an Asian man. His last name is one of the most common Japanese last names... ever. His first name is extremely common in Asian communities and is likely a romanization or shortening of the many many asian names that start with the syllable 'jay'. From a (fictional, but created BY ASIAN MEN specifically as a commentary on japan/korea) Asian country that is historically exploited by the United States. His entire story focuses on the fact that he does not have white privilege and is often exploited by white people. He LOOKS LIKE THIS.
The fact that Jay is nonwhite and is marginalized for being nonwhite is something that has been acknowledged multiple times by multiple authors. Namely Nicole Maines, his current main writer, who has retweeted analysis threads and made comments about how his development and radicalization is informed by this lack of privilege.
Yet numerous people have approached me, specifically when I am actively talking about how important it is that Jay is a man of color, and gone, well, isn't he white?
I cannot even BEGIN to FATHOM why this happens. You have to be a certain kind of dumb to look at JUST HIS NAME and go, ah, a white man. Do people think Nakamura is a French name or something?
But I can guess it comes down to a few things:
People just don't see Asian folk as people of color, I guess, outside of when they can be fetishized. This actually has been a problem in DC fandom specifically for a long time; I've noticed it particularly with Cass Cain and Damian Wayne, where their heritage will either be erased in favor of their white halves, or they'll be sexualized in the context of their cultures being orientalized.
In this same vein, race is often treated by fandom as purely cosmetic, and not something that could impact how a character is meant to be read or thought about in the story. This is part of how you get headcanons that end up leaning into racial stereotypes.
Jay is very obviously visibly queer. White people tend to assume we are the arbiters of queerness. Therefore, whenever a character has queer signifiers (dyed hair, piercings, etc), is queer, they are presumed to be white. It's the goddamn pink hair again, people can never be normal about it!
People who don't want to look racist online, but who also don't like Jay (and haven't read his stuff), are trying to convince themselves and others that they aren't actually putting down a character of color.
jay hasn't had a writer to whitewash him yet, so the fans gotta pick up the slack

I love how on Tumblr, "media literacy" has become "Um, just because someone writes about this doesn't mean they're endorsing this. I hate all these media puritans ruining everything."
I'm sad to inform you that knowing when and whether an author is endorsing something, implying something, saying something, is also part of media literacy. Knowing when they are doing this and when they're not is part of media literacy. Assuming that no author has ever endorsed a bad thing is how you fall for proper gander. It's not media literacy to always assume that nobody ever has agreed with the morally reprehensible ideas in their work.
Sometimes, authors are endorsing something, and you need to be aware when that happens, and you also need to be aware when you're doing it as an author. All media isn't horny dubcon fanfic where you and the author know it's problematic IRL but you get off to it in the privacy of your brain. Sometimes very smart people can convince you of something that'll hurt others in the real world. Sometimes very dumb people will romanticize something without realizing they're doing it and you'll be caught up in it without realizing that you are.
Being aware of this is also media literacy. Being aware of the narrative tools used to affect your thinking is media literacy. Deciding on your own whether you agree with an author or not is media literacy. Enjoying characters doing bad things and allowing authors to create flawed or cruel characters for the sake of a story is perfectly fine, but it is not the same as being media literate. Being smug about how you never think an author has bad intentions tells me you're edgy, not that you're media literate. You can't use one rule to apply to all media. That's not how media literacy works. Sorry! Sorry! Sorry! Aheem heem. Anyway.

Nah because why are you only mentioning Kenan and John Henry when pointing out the racism in the Superfam fandom? I checked their tags on your account. You have next to no posts about just discussing their characters and stories. The only times you mention Nat is to prop up your faves. So don't go acting all mighty and progressive because you also mostly ignore their existence. There is a problem in the Superfam fandom when it comes to poc and how often they get ignored, but bringing those poc only to try and appear better than someone else makes you part of the problem. Unless I'm missing some essays about Kenan's growth from a bully to a hero, what it means for John Henry to be a human hero in a city full of Supers and Nat following her uncle's example on your account, then you are no better than the ones you criticize. You need to get off your high horse and stop mentioning poc only when it's convenient. You are just being performative. It's clear those are characters you don't care about. Such a shame though, all three are really interesting.
Hi Chris Kent fan! I know its you. You've been harassing me and several other of my mutuals for the last week, and considering you are using the same rhetoric here you've used unsuccessfully on my mutuals, it really isn't hard to tell who would feel devoted enough to say this.
There are three things that are hilarious about this ask.
My primary fandom presence isn't on tumblr. I am actually on this website the least: So yes, you HAVE missed on a TON of essays about these two and how I feel about them, because you don't actually know me and you haven't even seen MOST of the things I have to say about DC comics as a whole. My primary fandom presence is on the Supertruth discord server which several of the people I am defending in this weird little flame war of yours are part of (hi @ultfreakme!) and have seen me talk about these characters and their stories at length. You do not know me well enough to assert whether or not I like a character by doing a cursory search of my blog.
Your little 'character blurbs' that are supposed to display your DEEP INTIMATE KNOWLEDGE of these characters, SUPERIOR TO MINE, are really shallow and innaccurate. Like, fanon levels of summarization. John Henry's character has very little to do with being a human in a town of supers nowadays and is largely focused on his complicated relationship with the military Industrial Complex (see Superwoman, Steelworks) as an inventor of supertechnology, Natasha is WAY more than just the nephew of John (SHE WAS PART OF THE AUTHORITY) and in fact a huge part of her presence in 52 was escaping out from under John's shadow, not following in his footsteps. You get the closest with Kenan: Yeah, he was a bully turned Super, that's absolutely the pitch GLY was using to sell Kenan as a character, but is that ALL he is to you? You're not going to mention his whole story also being a double for criticism of the Chinese government? His conflict with his parents and struggling to figure out what 'doing good' even means? What about Baixi, Deilan? (That enough analysis for you to be satisfied with some arbitrary level of 'caring'?)
The 'favorite character' in question you are accusing me of using these poc to prop up is Jay Fucking Nakamura, A MAN OF COLOR, AND ALSO A SUPERFAM CHARACTER YOU FUCKERS EXCLUDE ON THE REGULAR. He is an asian indigenous man IN THE TEXT and he is the DC character I post about THE MOST on this website. It is SUPER funny to accuse me of what, using POC to uplift the... other poc...? Thats based of me, I had no idea I was doing it! Like seriously saying this while Jay is my PFP is CRAZY funny. Do you HEAR yourself? And don't start on the "well jay isn't superfam!' nonsense because PAUL KAMINSKI, GROUP EDITOR FOR THE SUPERFAMILY, HAS SAID HE IS. But when have YOU guys cared about what the media you claim to like actually says, aye?
But lets say none of the above is true. Lets say you were right and I was just PRETENDING to care about some of my favorite characters in the entire DC franchise because... because of woke?
It doesn't change the fact that literally less than 24 hours ago you were in my inbox trying to argue that posting 'kent family' as opposed to 'superfamily' was a great Get Out of Jail Free card for excluding characters of color. It doesn't change the fact that you guys repeatedly include Chris over the canon POC within the superfamily. It doesn't change the fact that calling that behavior out is NECESSARY, regardless on if a person 'posts enough' about the characters they're trying to defend from fandom racism. It doesn't change the fact that, according to you 'agreeing' with me in this ask, you decided that picking a fight with someone who made a point you agreed with was somehow the best course of action.
But you don't agree, do you? And that's kind of what its been about all along. The fandom love of Chris Kent is changing as people notice that he is, a) not a good character b) consistently favored over better non-white characters c) repeatedly used as a tool in arguments to put other characters within the superfam down. And now that people are calling this what it is- white favoritism- you are feeling attacked because you are attached to Chris but NOT to these characters people are now pushing. So you are scrambling for reasons to tell people who express these thoughts that they're actually the bigoted ones in some way. What does that accomplish other than squashing long overdue discussions of fandom racism?
I'm not here for it. You can fuck right off.

It is heinously racist to call the Asian man trying to liberate his country from a fucking dictator who tortured him, his mother, and thousands of other civilians a "pervert terrorist" because he’s dating one half of a fanon ship you. I don't care if you ship damijon, re-examine why you're calling Jay a pervert(Asian men are always put into such boxes), a terrorist(for doing nothing but trying to save his country), and why 90% of your creators paint Talia to be entirely evil and make Damian hate her while embracing Bruce and being drawn white as a fucking sheet.
Just say you half-read like 10 issues of super sons and leave if you don't like Jay instead of saying shit on par with the most ignorant racists on the planet.
Jon isn't some hapless idiot seduced by Jay. He WANTS Jay, equally, and pursued him and saw that Jay had a dark past & said "yeah I fucking love him still" and took down the entire goddamn justice league for him. Jon gave him a ring & ditched his hero duties to go hang with Jay. Jon Kent loves Jay in Canon and if you cannot accept that really simple fact & throw tantrums being racist to creators & to jonjay fans instead of staying in your corner of the fandom, fuck you.
#jay nakamura#jon kent#dc comics#these people are so incredibly racist it’s actually crazy#infantilizing the white boy and demonizing the man of color oh where have I seen this before#Asian characters can not exist without fan culture sexualizing and/or demonizing them#it’s also crazy how these people are openly racist to Jayjon fans

Okay, I wasn't going to say anything about it, but y'all are just being ridiculous now, so I have to say it.
A common criticism of Jay Nakamura is the idea that he only got romantically involved with Jon to get Jon to help him with what he was doing. And this is meant to be like, an indictment of Jay, that he somehow manipulated Jon into helping him out and that's bad, but like... lets pretend that's true for a second, okay?
The explicit text of Son of Kal El is that Jay is a displaced indigenous refugee who is trying to liberate his country and his people from a western-sponsored dictator (and the literal slavery he has imposed upon them).
So according to this take, Jay had to romantically manipulate Jon into... helping him take a stand against colonialism. He had to trick Superman into helping him do something i hope we all agree is objectively correct. Specifically by bribing him with romantic affection.
I just wanna know: In what universe is that an indictment of Jay and not Jon?
Like, that's a world where Jon had to get something out of the arrangement to consider doing the objectively right thing. That's fucked up! Extremely fucked up! And I would never villify Jay, who again I remind you escaped actual enslavement, for needing to do that to get help for himself and his people! Why would you?
#jay nakamura#jon kent#dc comics#this!!!#people need to read the comic before they criticize Jay#and look at SOKE in the perspective of race and liberation

I broke my silence. Nah, I need someone to talk to me about JonJay, since they are still underrated by the fandom. Like, they started being hated out of nowhere. That nonsense about Damian hating Jay, about what if Jon showed Jay Damian, he would immediately reject it. Demi is literally a fan of Jay and his blog, he literally contributed to Jay and Jon getting together at the 2022 Pride, Jay calls Damian by name and basically sees him without a mask in his real guise, which suggests that he trusts him just enough to show his real personality. He praises him, well, to many of his friends and even relatives (Grayson). This is complete nonsense that the fandom made up is killing me. People also say that Jay is not registered. What? Like, yes, I would also like to know more about him, but this does not mean that he does not have a personality. The entire plot of the comic revolves around him and his story, how in this case can he not have his own character and personality?( like, we literally see that he is a very brave and smart young man who knows how to make difficult decisions. He is also quite daring, he won’t go into his pocket for words, he can express everything he thinks. Jay is very smart and cunning, he knows how to achieve his own and will stand by his interests to the last.) It really scares me how people either don’t want to understand his character. I also saw someone talking about how Jon might cheat on Jay and Nya because the author of her comic released a post about the SuperDreamer (that's what the ship is called). What? In terms of, this bro refused to kiss his boyfriend on the another universe simply because it's not his Jay and people seriously believe that Jon will cheat with another person when he's literally loyal to only one and we're literally shown that, well, he's incapable of cheating on Jay because so much loves him. This is so stupid. Yes, after all, in one of the comics Jon calls a day with Jay “Mental Health Day.” I don’t understand what’s wrong with people. And it seems to me that no matter what happens, Jay will always remain Jon’s main and important love interest. My beloved boys deserve more attention and love from the fandom. I hope that someday they will grow to realize that they are perfect for each other and only at this moment will I find peace
Anon, Anon you are so correct and I love you and I have been sitting with this frustration since 2021 and I am tired.
I know exactly why people don't give Jay a chance:
Xenophobia
Racism
Biases against actual queer people
It gets in the way of the fanon ship; Damian x Jon
A good 99% of the hate I see comes from Damian and Jon shippers who were, for some reason under the impression that Jon being bisexual means he will date Damian....who is not only 3 years younger than him but also just barely out of middle school while Jon is in college.
Most people are still also attached to Super Sons comics, and have yet to come to terms with the fact that Jon is aged up, he is not getting aged down, and Super Sons as it once was is not coming back. So they don't bother reading SOKE or AOSJK or any Jon appearance that occurs where it's JUST Jon (because if you've noticed, the jon kent tag is all damian because they see Jon as Damian's accessory and love interest and not an independent character).
Super Sons mischaracterized both Damian and Jon egregiously while being racist and sexist towards Talia (one very easy example; Damian hates going to school because he's far surpassed that academic level & really only needs school for socialization. Why would Damian who was older than Jon before, willingly go to a grade 3 times below his own where Jon lives, where he needs to get to by helicopter??). Reading that alone means people don't understand Jon, Damian, or Talia(or anyone really).
So when they learn that Damian actually LIKES Jay, that he liked Jay first and enough to introduce him to Dick and potentially a bunch of other batfam characters, they just can't stand it. How dare Damian get in the way of fans shipping him with his best friend(who is 17/18)??? Wdym Damian is happily dating a girl named Nika aka Flatline! Now let's be sexist to the 14 year old girl and call her evil manipulative bitch!!!
Why on Earth would Jon like Jay??? He's not Damian!
And that's another thing; Jay is not Damian and that is all these haters need to destroy Jay and dismiss him. This isn't about character arcs, or canon, or storytelling. It's about being mad that fanon isn't real.
I used to try to get them to at least give SOKE a chance. I wanted to be polite and have a proper discussion but things got overtly racist. I've had people tell me that Jay is seducing Jon, he is evil, he is a criminal who has no morals, he isn't "Asian enough". Me and a bunch of twitter mutuals experienced actual racism, towards ourselves, when talking to these people. I had to delete my account because it was affecting my mental health and I couldn't take it. We also experienced lots of biphobic and homophobic takes (especially about the pink hair which was very fun for a bisexual Asian with pink hair at the time). About how Jay is some "kpop knock off" or "creep" because he and Jon shared a fully consensual kiss. Like yes Karen explain to me how the immigrant Asian kid who just wants to save his country from a colonizer is evil because he kissed a white boy. Do tell me about how he's "mind controlling" Jon to love him. We didn't even have those words thrown around when Saturn Girl legit mind-controlled Jon. But of course! It's because she's white and no one actually read that Legion run. It can pass for heterosexual so who cares!
And the cheating thing grinds my gears it actually makes me want to go scream.
SURE! Let's have the bisexual character cheat! You know let's just forget about how bi people are already stereotyped as sluts and cheaters. Or that Jon's Superman and he straight up said "I'm not going to cheat on Jay."
I think Nicole Maines isn't going to touch JayJon, her run with Dreamer ends around the same time as or before Pride Month and we are getting a pride month jayjon story(unconfirmed yet officially but a cover artist is hinting that's the case). If she does though, if this story is signed-off and it happens through cheating I'm just gonna have to stop reading DC.
I think cheating plots are idiotic, especially with Superfam. Their whole thing is "truth justice better tomorrow." They strive to do good and be kind and honest. Wtf am I taking away if you so severely hurt a person you claim to love? I think they are a lazy and a cheap way to generate bad drama.
If you want drama and for SuperDreamer to happen, at least make JayJon have a proper break up. Making Jon cheat would assassinate his character and Dreamer's because NIA KNOWS JAY. In the story Nia's appearing, she's being sent in to attack Jay's country. It's not even a character flaw atp it's just you two are being hypocritical and choosing to hurt a friend who's done nothing but be kind(lest we forget, Jay was cleaning up Jon's reputation and lost his secret identity FOR JON. He's the one who stayed calm while Jon was about to fight when Nia first showed up).
If Nia is chill with Superman cheating with her on Jay and is simultaneously attacking his country(though it is under Waller's pressure), I will simply leave. What's the point? It's not like POC characters in Superfam get enough respect anyways, especially the Asian ones (I see you Kong Kenan, I SEE YOU). The Steels are fortunately getting more time but that happened after decades and decades (and I've still got no news on Nat and Traci 13 DC GET IT TOGETHER, Nat still doesn't get enough focus imo). I sound really mean towards Dreamer rn but I actually really enjoy the Jon and Nia friendship. I just fucking hate cheaters though, those kind of plots are always exhausting and ill-thought out and the characters become garbage. Because like, you're a superhero, a symbol of goodness and striving to do better. Cheating is actively taking a decision to hurt a person in a deeply personal way. Why would I believe a single thing you say about "truth" when you can't even give that to someone close to you?
I think we should just let the haters stew on their nonsense and find people who create a positive fandom space. My block list for blogs and tags is a mile long. If they can't see how well-written and balanced Jon and Jay are for each other, that's a loss for them and they may....continue to seethe or whatever it is they do.
If you aren't on the supertruth discord server yet or know of it, I'd highly recommend joining!! It's very fun
This was a mess of a response and I let my emotions get too far away from me I am so sorry. I really understand you Anon <3<3 Hugs and comfort from me!!
#jon kent#jay nakamura#jayjon#soke#YES#my feelings exactly#you dont have to love Jay just don’t resort to racism when making fun of him

The World-Building of Gamorra
While I’m on the topic of Jay and Jon I think it’d be very interesting and very good world building if DC expanded upon Gamorra as a country and Jay’s ties to it (especially as someone who’s Japanese which is pretty much what Gamorra is based off of)…

So I’ve been reading The Authority which is the comic where Henry Bendix and Gamorra originated from. Before you look into the series, I highly do not recommend reading it unless it’s a simple wiki article since the series notoriously has very disgusting, disturbing and triggering themes.
The author of The Boys wrote a run for it, enough said.
.
.

So in The Authority, Gamorra, like its DC counterpart, is an obviously Asian country in the Asian Pacific that is technologically advanced. It was once called Parousia but is now named after and ruled by a dictator, Kaizen Gamorra, who turns its inhabitants into super soldiers and invests in weapons for terrorism as he wants to show Gamorra’s “superiority” to the world. (Ironically enough the word “kaizen” 改善 in Japanese means “good change” or “improvement”.)

The citizens and inhabitants of the island blindly follow him and throw their lives away for him, throughout the series he has hundreds of his own men killed by the protagonists because of it. Later on, after one last attempt of terrorism and world domination, he is ultimately defeated and Gamorra’s fate is unknown.

The country of Gamorra was, believe it or not, rebooted in the New 52 prior to Son of Kal-El where Kaizen Gamorra is back once again as a dictator that engages in terrorism and warfare in a series called Team 7.

He is later killed and Gamorra is ultimately destroyed by a tsunami caused by a member of Team 7 as an act of revenge since Kaizen Gamorra killed his family. Kaizen Gamorra’s son later on conquers a country called Rheelasia which he names “New Gamorra” but is also defeated. The fate of Gamorra in this series is once again, unknown but is implied due to the events of Son of Kal-El that it rebuilds and forms a democracy.
Which would be a great prequel/tie-in for Jay.

So as we know, in Son of Kal-el, Gamorra is an Asian country that got taken over by Henry Bendix who uses its inhabitants for biological experiments. Not much else is explained as far as the state of the country prior to Bendix taking over.

It is shown that the citizens are aware of the terrible state the country is now in under his leadership. Some even trying to escape by boat and Bendix trying to cover up the story as well as the rest of the world turning a blind eye to it👀

Nothing else is explained other than Jay having been experimented on and wanting to save and free the country from its dictatorship and that his mother was the former president.
Now here’s where I start going off on tangents and headcanons:
So, I really think they should’ve explained why Gamorra was so eager to vote Bendix in. Obviously it’s because they thought he’d be a better president, but that leaves the question, why did the citizens think he would be better than Sara Nakamura? Especially since he wasn’t a citizen of Gamorra. It’s only said he’d promise them a better economy and way of living, but what was the state of the economy before then? It obviously must’ve been really shitty if they were so eager to vote a total stranger as their president.

So my theory is, if DC is smart enough to bring this info back into light, Gamorra must’ve still been in shambles especially after years of its own bloody history of terrorism, biological experiments and warfare as well as the tsunami caused by Team 7.
I like to think when Sara got elected she was trying to reverse the damages caused by Kaizen Gamorra and Team 7, and convert Gamorra into a simple democratic country that kept to itself with no more investments into weapons and warfare.
The citizens were probably unhappy with that change as they felt it weakened the image, status and economy of the country so Bendix probably swooped in and did a “Make Gamorra Great Again” campaign that won the people over. They probably were aware of the re-introduction of biological experiments and warfare but likely thought it was to demonstrate Gamorra’s might rather than be turned into weapons for Bendix to use for his own plans.
It’d be amazing if DC made a prequel/sequel series that covered and expanded on all of this…
It’d also be amazing if they had Jay and Jon visit Gamorra more often since:
A. It’s Jay’s original home and birthplace.
B. It’s the country Jay and Jon spent a whole arc trying to save so why the fuck would they not spend more time there even if it’s in shambles Tom Taylor…😐

Not to mention as someone who’s Japanese I like how it’s drawn and how it resembles Tokyo and Shibuya.
I would love it if Jay taught Jon the history and culture and how despite its terrible past, Jay still cares about his country and wants to rebuild it for the better and prevent shitty ideals and occurrences from ever happening again, especially as the former president’s son. They could possibly have an arc where Jay and Jon uproot the remaining imperialists in Gamorra who believe it should still invest in weapons and militaristic ideals and even supported Bendix. Maybe they could even move there together in the future…🤭
Anyway that’s about it, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

continuing my adventures of looking up old dc comics fandom drama, i honestly commend the writing team for making jay sooooo ambiguous in his nature and intentions towards superman in the first couple of issues that like half the fandom thought he was a villain, including the homophobes. no doubt bruce’s lil “you cannae trust the gamorran” fueled that speculation as well. HOWEVER, i think it also stands to be said that by the time SOKE vol two wrapped up, it was pretty clear that jon was NOT dickmatized, and actually did recognize that he was basically being recruited for an insurgency group, and was FINE with it. like the whole build up the first volume was that jon DIDN’T like that a superman’s morals had to “be a certain way,” and sure, superman won’t club a seal to death to feed a pregnant polar bear, but he’ll sure as heck give the polar bear the resources to do so herself.
sure he won’t strangle bendix himself, but he’s not gonna let crimes against humanity and posthumanity go unpunished. jon knew saving a boatful of refugees was gonna have SOMEBODY call him a traitorous alien terrorist, and to no one’s surprise, lex and bendix did just that. jay tryna seduce him into doing more probably came to no one’s surprise bc jon could actually DO things to further their cause. not to say jay wasn’t slick, cuz he most certainly was, but by the time we was wrappin up SOKE vol 2, jon’s pretty clear that even IF jay tried to seduce him to use his power against bendix, it’s only because jon LET him. you dont fall asleep on a man’s couch and put your full trust in him and NOT desire him some typa way. this wasn’t even a pull. jon straight up trusted that man to look after him in his most vulnerable state AND THEY HADN’T EVEN KISSED!!
and you also don’t spend your teenage years in a hell earth being routinely manipulated and abused and NOT know when someone’s playing the long game. despite jay’s game (and this is speculating he even HAS a game), jon i believe genuinely loves him, and i think the same is true for jay. jon had no reason to go out of his way the way he did after the initial heroics. he CHOSE to continue helping. similarly, jay coulda cut his losses after bendix almost murked them at the kent farm, but continued to keep his shit going bc even a death warrant is ok if he can manage to expose bendix long enough to save his people. unstoppable superman meeting and falling in love with an immovable revolutionary? if dc wasn’t so homophobic, we would already have three animated series and a movie by now. this is straight up a fantasy horror romance, and i support it!
