the pain is still white-hot and searing; and from the sensation of cool air against the freshly carved skin of her back, rumi can tell that her shirt is ruined. three, large and deep claw marks run from the base of her spine to her shoulder blades, and while they are nothing she won’t survive, the sharp sting of them nearly makes her eyes water.

“it’s fine, mira,” she says between gritted teeth, unsure of how to move to avoid aggravating them further. rumi can hear celine in her head, scolding her to stand—reminding her that every second spent indisposed is an advantage to the enemy.

“besides,” rumi is breathing hard as she struggles to her feet, feeling light-headed as she does. “you do it—” a sharp inhale. “for us. all the time.” her face is set into a hard grimace, but still manages to string together a small, reassuring smile.

six months into their second year, mira was nearly drowned by a water demon and had to be resuscitated by rumi. mira needed two months to fully recover (physically and emotionally). rumi and zoey were given two weeks to recover from the shock and trauma of witnessing that, and then covered for mira by doing a lot of media. publicly, mira's hiatus reason was stated to be due to an undisclosed medical condition and at the advice of her physicians.

ZOEY

eight months prior to the events of the movie, zoey was crushed beneath a large demon, which fractured several ribs and led to a collapsed lung. she took just under a month to recover (hunters heal faster than average humans). the public reason for her hiatus was a mental health break.

mira’s voice—cut from the purest marble, steeped in grit and rubble—could bring even the strongest willed to their knees. rumi is no different. goosebumps erupt across her arms and down her legs, and suddenly, there is nothing she wouldn’t do or say.

“you’ve been watching me?” playful, coy … mostly rhetorical. rumi knows she has. mira has always been the most perceptive of the group, as if she has her finger on their pulse the way that rumi’s lips cover hers now. reluctantly, rumi pulls back, dark eyes lingering on mira’s perfect mouth first before ultimately meeting her gaze.

“what else have you seen?” it’s a dangerous question but so is whatever this is; so are their lives.

rumi reaches out with her right hand to gently caress mira’s face. her touch is feather-light, the pad of her thumb tracing from the corner of mira’s lips along the high rise of her cheek. she’s looking at her mouth again, her heart a trapped bird in her chest. restraint stands, barred, on the opposite side of mira’s bedroom door.

THE FLEETING TOUCHES WERE BEGINNING TO DRIVE MIRA a bit crazy. Accompanied with gazes that settle for moments too long, causing the taller woman to be all too aware of the set of eyes that linger on her. With each passing moment of rehearsal, the tension only continued to grow thicker, until finally ... a breaking point.

When Rumi guides her, she allows in pent up something -- hearing the lock click and suddenly she's so grateful to find the wall against her back. Broken breaths escape her lips, strained moans fumbling forth as her hands grip to Rumi's figure as if a life support.

Each kiss against her neck has Mira biting down on her own lip, eyes fluttering shut. Between the onslaught of physical and verbal affection, it was nearly too much for her to handle, and instead she forces herself to focus on grounding herself for the moment.

" You're one to talk. " She says finally after a moment, voice low and heavy. It's hard for her to focus with the direct pressure, but she manages. " Really made me wonder just how long you were going to last before breaking. "

𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝘼𝘿𝙍𝙀𝙉𝘼𝙇𝙄𝙉𝙀 𝙃𝘼𝙎 𝙒𝙊𝙍𝙉 𝙊𝙁𝙁, and exhaustion has begun to set in. there are fresh burn marks on her arms, licked by gwi-ma's flames, and various cuts and bruises peppered across her skin, but she is otherwise physically unharmed.

she doesn't meet celine's eyes. rumi stares ahead at the ground past her mentor's feet, her hair hanging loosely and unkempt in something that barely constitutes a braid. in her hands, she grasps her chilseonggeom.

"i wasn't going to," she answers flatly. rumi glances up, finally looking at the woman who raised her, fatigue gnawing at the soft edges of her face and the corners of her eyes. she digs her sword carefully in the ground, letting it be the barrier between her and celine.

"it's done," rumi tells her unceremoniously. "the new honmoon is intact, and gwi-ma is either dead or banished. you have what you always wanted, what you trained us for."
