Until he was 20, Ollie's mom kept him mostly at home. He walked in the garden, and saw only relatives who came for the holidays. Mom (Marfa) gave Ollie a "proper" education at home. They pray at home, and perform all the necessary (and not so necessary) rituals at home (one of these is an exorcism, which Marfa undertook). This is because the only time Ollie and his mother went to church, Ollie had an epileptic seizure and they were not allowed to go to church after that.

When Ollie turns 20, his mother dies and the house is taken over by his relatives, as Marfa did not have time to transfer the house to her son. As a result, Ollie lives on Moralton for a while, after which he goes to Sinville, on the recommendation of local homeless people.

All the fun ends after a random conversation in a bar, where Ollie realizes that most of the residents of Sinville are Catholic and that everyone is consciously and deliberately sinning. (Previously, Ollie was aware of the different laws and commandments that his mother had created specifically for his upbringing)

Ollie goes back to Moralton, where no one knows/remembers him. He rents an apartment on the edge of town and works at a bar, sometimes filling in for Dolly. Now, he hurts himself not only to numb his seizures, but also to atone for his sins. He's always feeling guilty. He tried to go to church and often went to confession. But Putty grew tired of him and his constant complaints, which were even more tedious than those of Principal Fakey.

Later, he finds a m*sochist club and joins it. There, he realizes his homosexuality and his love for m*sochism. This makes him feel better and more free, but not completely.
