But wait, I thought Mystra got into a relationship with Gale when he was 8 as his teacher or something. Even if they weren't a couple, that's still predatory. At least that's what's been going around . . .

Okay, let me lay out a timeline for you.

1385 - Start of the Spellplague, Year of the Blue Fire (4e manual)

1395 - The Blue Fire stopped burning and you can use arcane magic, but the Weave was still very damaged and the plague still ravaged the land

1479 - Elminster starts to go about the business of resurrecting Mystra (Elminster Enraged by Ed Greenwood)

1480 - Spellplague officially over. Weave back online

1487 - Mystra "whole" again and takes back her mantle of godhood

1492 - Start of BG3

SO, the earliest Gale could become Mystra's Chosen was 12 years prior the game when Elminster was recruiting people to aid in her resurrection. (Gale helping in her resurrection gives further context to why he was gungho about retrieving lost "parts" of Mystra. He was just doing what he previously done as her Chosen but went a step too far with the Karsite Weave.)

According to Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms (I do not recommend this mobile game), Gale is 35. He would have been 23 in 1480, and he was 8 years old in 1465. Mystra literally could not have even communicated to 8-year-old Gale back then, let alone been his teacher.

I think the confusion stems from one of Elminster's in-game epilogue letters where he reminisces on first meeting Gale.

Do you recall the day we first met, m'boy? You could have been no more than eight summers' old, clutching your mother's apron, eyebrows singed off by the fireball you'd unleashed into your neighbour's rose bush.

This does not mean Mystra was involved. Forgotten Realms gods are not omnipotent and omnipresent, including Mystra. Not every spider is an agent of Lolth, Sharess isn't at every furry orgy, and not all magic involves Mystra.

Unless there's a story I missed where 8-year-old Gale learned magic from a strangely mystical bear, I don't think he and Mystra were involved until he was already a fully trained magic user from one of the most prestigious wizard schools in Faerûn.

the thing about astarion is that i do think that he is COMICALLY his own worst enemy but i also recognize that the reason for that is that he hit a sharp genre shift at 100000 mph. one second you're the hot and kinda tragic but expendable minion of a d&d boss and the next you're the romancable companion in the party. this little man was built to have his lore discovered in a notebook while looting his corpse after you've killed cazador and all the sudden everyone's like hey astarion. do you want to sit by the fire and tell us about yourself :) we all like you and want you happy :) and he's like what the fuuuuck. what the fuuuuuuuuuuuckkkkkk????

however i do still find him funny about it, sorry man
