                      her eyes met his and knot formed in her stomach.  he loved her, truly, and she loved him even more.  she loved him so much that it hurt her.  it hurt to remember all the pain he caused him, yet in his mind, none of that compared to the hope she gave him.  to think such a selfish girl could be his glimpse at a better future.

                      letting go of his, she quickly reached up to hold his face in her hands.  her hands were trembling, but only slightly ( learning to hide things like that had become a necessity in life ).  her thumb grazes his cheek as she looked over him, inspecting the very life she both freed and imprisoned.  

                       " you speak too highly of me.  i do not deserve such an honor…  though, i am glad you found it in your heart to continue to love such a selfish soul such as mine. “

                     still holding his face, she leaned a bit closer, her lips hovering over his.  even now, in her guilt, she still wished to indulge herself in his love.  it was wrong, she knew he deserved someone much better than her in this second chance of existence.  

                        ” you were right about me loving you until the end…  i never stopped loving you nor do i plan to stop any time in the future.  you will forever be my knight, my husband… the man who holds my heart. “

                                 “ you know, a simple i love you, too would suffice. ” he smiled softly, moving to grab her hands once they reach his face. he entwines their fingers once again. if he could stay like this forever, he would be satisfied. well, almost. he would truly be satisfied if he could rid grainne of her guilt. though that was a seemingly impossible wish. 

                                                “ i never doubted you. ” it hurt him to think on what grainne must have went through without him. what his children went through. he wanted to be with them for so much longer. he hardly got to be with his children. he hardly got to be with his wife. as much as he cherished every second he spent with grainne, he couldn’t help wanting more. and now that she was here, diarmuid couldn’t help but selfishly wish for something like that. to say he’d moved on from the past was a foolish lie. he had said that before so he wouldn’t have to face the truth -- that even though he had forgiven fionn, he missed his children, he missed his wife dearly. 

                                                “ i missed you, grainne. ” diarmuid leaned in to kiss her, a short and gentle kiss. he leaned his forehead lightly on grainne’s, not wanting to separate from her at all. “ i missed us. ”

                      normally, she would be overjoyed to feel him over every inch of her.  not to say she didn’t enjoy it, simply that her mind was currently elsewhere.  she kept that to herself, letting him continue to kiss her, hoping that her thoughts would drown in the love being given to her.  it did not happen though and the lancer quickly began to take notice as her returning affection lacked more and more and became distant.

                      her heart skipped a beat at his smile and the feeling on her hands in his.  this was not something she deserved.  the death of the man in front of her was her fault, something that she had deeply engraved into herself when she was living as a widow.  her eyes turned away, unable to meet the gaze of the man in front of her.  

                          “ …i am just trying to understand…  how you can be so forgiving to the woman who ruined your life, who became your downfall.  i know you do not wish to hear me speak like that though- ”

                                 “ it’s because you don’t see it from my perspective. ” to emphasize, he reached a hand to cup her cheek, turning her face so she would look him in the eyes. “ see? ” he joked a bit, giving her a smile. he hoped that she would see the love for her reflected in his eyes. that was a bit cliched, though, wasn’t it?

                                               “ you’re the one who made my life worth living. of course, i will always live as a knight -- ” even if he didn’t act like it all the time-- “ -- but being with you was ... so much better than that. you gave me purpose beyond serving someone else. ... well, i lived to serve you, but ... at least i knew you would love me until the end. ” 

                                               “ you gave me a family. you gave me so much to live for, so much more than living for death. ” he kissed her hand, feeling a wave of mixed emotion and affection thinking on those times. “ i think of you and i think of the start of the life i dreamed of, not the end of my life. i know ... that it’s difficult for you to see it that way, but ... that is how i see it. ”

                                diarmuid and grainne had been spending their time away from the battlefield doing what most reunited couples would do -- kiss, of course. diarmuid had made it his mission to kiss every part of her reincarnated body, to show her just how much he loved her. how much he missed her. how much he wanted to spend the rest of this life, and every life, with her. however, he noticed that she wasn’t quite herself since they reunited. but how could she be? diarmuid himself wasn’t the same, either, he just had more time to process everything as a heroic spirit. he pushed himself up and off of her to sit face-to-face. 

                                             “ what’s on your mind? ” he smiled gently at her, taking her hands in his. “ don’t tell me nothing, i know that face. ” // @mageas

                               “ huh? an old man? ” he scoffed, though he knew she was just teasing so he wouldn’t worry about her. in response to her squishing his face, he ruffled her hair a bit. “ you know, i’m not trying to demean your abilities. i’m just concerned for your well-being because i love you. ” then he took her hands, swinging them back and forth a bit. “ hmm ... maybe we can make a meal together? ” it wasn’t something they’ gotten to do properly during their lives, and diarmuid was really enjoying catching up on all the domesticity that had been stolen from them.

                              he returns the hug and deepens the kiss, thankful for any affection he gets from her now ( because he knows how easily it can be taken away ). he holds onto her for a minute before pulling away, noticing her exhaustion. “ did you strain yourself? you look tired, you should get some rest. ”
