idk if it's just me or if it's the quadruple dose of antihistamines I'm on, but I had the weirdest dream about a Hungarian theater adaptation of Gideon the Ninth. There was an on-stage Griddlehark kiss, but they made wear Gideon wear a skirt and made her overall far less butch than in canon. Also hardly anyone died and the finale of the show included the whole cast getting stuck on a desert island. There was a huge island structure with cool stage effects including real water, but like, what.

Also the night before that I dreamed that after Budapest Pride was banned, the next logical step was to hold it outside of Budapest, like, rurally, marching through agglomeration towns north alongside the Danube, past the suburbs of Dunakeszi and all the fish-and-chips places in Göd. Some people followed along on boats. There was a float with wizards on it, and not sexy wizards either.

Any time I get even a mildly disruptive health condition I suddenly remember the question of "jesus fuck how do people with chronic pain do this". Of course I know the answer is "with great difficulty" and "because they don't have an alternative," but still.

Idk if I want to brag or complain or just tmi, but I managed to produce some spectacular contact dermatitis this week. (I'm mostly fine now, but there were truly massive boils involved.)

The government banned Budapest Pride, the mayor of Budapest tried to exploit a legal loophole by organising it as a municipal technically-not-actually-pride event, the police declared that they're banning it anyway, the mayor is insisting that they can't ban it for the reasons they're citing because it still isn't technically pride, it looks like the official policy for this year's pride march is going to be:

I still think its the funniest shit ever that when I used to volunteer at planned parenthood every week even though I walked past mostly the same protesters every single time they were begging me not to get an abortion theres other options yadda yadda. It's really hard to imagine Europe without New World plants. Can you imagine Italian food without tomato, Irish or Polish food without potato, Hungarian food without paprika? Medieval European food was thoroughly maizeless and unpotatoed.

One of my favourite anachronisms is that the Hungarian epic poem Toldi, written in the 19th but set in the 14th century, casually talks about servants shucking corn. Like no, they could not have done that, not in the 1340s.

The messed-up thing is that European seagulls didn't encounter any form of potato until the Early Modern era, it's an American plant that didn't become a staple crop over here until the late 1700s. So imagine a seagull woefully eating a turnip.

I just don’t get it. How can our society act so goddamned normal about seahorses. How can anybody so casually accept that that’s a fish???

This is one of nature’s most anatomically perverse of all beasts. A FISH, like a carp or a bass or a beta is a fish, but it bent its body straight up only to bend its head permanently back down. It stretched its skull into a pipe. It tapered its tail like a lizard, specifically like a chameleon. It can also move its eyes independently by the way, you know, like a chameleon. Fun fact, it can change color to express its mood, like you know whatever does that. It doesn’t properly swim anymore. It buzzes its few remaining fins like an insect’s wings to float itself around at a snail’s pace. It lives its whole life clinging to coral branches or seaweed, which means it decided to become a “tree dweller” in an environment where gravity didn’t even matter anyway. The males get pregnant. They make noises at each other by rubbing some of their neck bones together. Every day, EVERY DAY a mated pair does a little dance and a little neck bone song so they remember which two seahorses they were. They’re a beautiful precious obscenity. Nothing so adorable ever made such a strong case against a logical creator.

They have as little skin and meat as they could get away with. Their skeleton is almost all they are.
