Hinata Hajime wear a short-sleeve white shirt. This is a pretty obvious statement. As well, all the concept art of Hinata we have - of different designs they went through for him - either have short-sleeve white shirts, short-sleeve black shirts, or a long-sleeve black blazer similar to Naegi.

Furthermore, early art used to promote SDR2 in the early days depict a Hinata that looks slightly different but, otherwise, much of the same.

I bring up this information to prove that even in his earliest iterations, Hinata was never really "meant" to wear a long-sleeve white shirt specifically. Not without, at least, a black blazer over it.
The SDR2 artbook even backs this up in this paragraph:
At this point in time, the protagonist's claim to fame for his design was pitched to be a "simple but fresh, short-sleeved shirt". Building upon this, we began to focus the design based on hairstyle, not clothing.
I then find it mildly interesting that there's instances of Hinata being depicted with a long-sleeve shirt in the final game.
For instance, every single Monokuma File animation.
While in-game we can only see a small part of Hinata's hand, the animations in Danganronpa are made up of several moving image files that are typically much larger than what is shown in the final game. In this case, we have the full image of Hinata's hand that is used for the Monokuma File animations, and it depicts him as having a long-sleeve shirt.
Again, due to how these animations are shot, the player would never know this. But I find it interesting regardless that it was clearly drawn this way.
Secondly, there's the image Enoshima shows in Chapter 6.

Which also depicts Hinata as having a long-sleeve shirt (and Enoshima herself too, oddly, despite the fact her shirt is rolled up to her elbows).
There's also Monomi's notebook, where Hinata's arms are not colored in, leading me to believe it's part of his white shirt:
Although it is worth noting the Day 16 entry gets it correct:
I don't think any of this is necessarily "indicative" of Hinata having been planned to once have a long-sleeve shirt, or anything. Actually, I believe all these instances were just mistakes, similar to how a lot of official Sonic the Hedgehog art in the 90's and 2000's mistakenly gave Sonic blue arms; it's an easy mistake to make, especially since Naegi wore long-sleeves.
I assume these minor mistakes were never fixed either by being missed or simply deemed not that big of a deal. But I find it interesting that it has happened more than once.

One thing people seem to miss about Makoto (or maybe I'm the one misreading him? 😅) is that Makoto doesn't really care about talent. But not in a "I hate talent" or "I don't believe in talent" way.
He does acknowledge talent and admires it. But he never really express a strong desire to have one. Sure, he might think "ah, it'd be cool to have a cool talent and be like these cool talented people", but it's never really a driving force for him.
And even when he does get the title of Ultimate Lucky Student, Makoto doesn't really see it as a talent. Nor does he "use" it, like Nagito does. Makoto really thinks he's just some talentless guy who happened to be there and questions if "luck" can really be considered a talent (in contrast to Nagito, who does think his luck is a talent, just a crappy one)
Hell, the reason why he accepted to go to Hope's Peak tells us a lot: he went to Hope's Peak because the ones who graduate from that academy usually get many prospects for the future. And here we can connect to the facts that: 1) Hope doesn't exist in a vacuum, one must hope for something; 2) Makoto's hope is, ultimately, about the future. Makoto goes to Hope's Peak Academy not because he idolizes talent or hope or because he wants to be someone special. He goes to Hope's Peak Academy for the same reason we research colleges before applying: raising the chances of getting a good job so you have a good future. Dude just wants to finish his education and make his curriculum better so he'll be hired easier.
Makoto took one look at everything Hope's Peak Academy was about and said "but will it help me get a well paying job?"
And it bleeds into his interactions with others. He can see beyond their talents because he doesn't place that much weight in the existence of said talents. Yeah, they're incredible and awesome, but... Will them help anyone get a good job? 😂😂 Makoto exists outside of talent.
So, if he were to meet Hajime before the Hope Cultivation Program, Hajime would hate his guts with thrice the prejudice. 1) Makoto's an ordinary guy who got to be part of the Main Course while Hajime, another ordinary guy, can only be a Reserve Course student and because of what? A fuckin lottery!; 2) Makoto is genuinely a good guy and his answer to being disliked is to be kinder, which makes Hajime hate him more because how dare he not be upset when Hajime is so obviously hostile (not directly, he's not doing anything to Makoto because he's not a bully, but his cold and cutting behavior makes his distaste clear); 3) Makoto doesn't??? Actually??? Want??? A talent??? It's everything Hajime wanted and Makoto acts like not having one is not a big deal??? The fuck you're at Hope's Peak for if you don't even care about what it stands for??
#op you get it#dr (esp dr2) is also such a commentary on talent vs personhood#and while the main trio of dr2 rEALLY examines talent vs personhood and to not discard yourself for talent#naegi is still his own commentary -- even if a lighter one but still a very analyzable one -- that you don't need talent#or need to care about talent as long as you're yourself#which is a very nanami pov (makes sense given nanami's role) of 'you don't need talent you just need to believe in yourself' @ hinata#'makoto's hope is ultimately about the future' OH this is such a good point#and oooo now realizing that nanami's 'as long as you believe in yourself you can create your own future' is basically what naegi did#people mention that hope's peak hope(/komaeda's hope) is very abstract and while it's not wrong#when 'hope' isn't used in a way for it to mean something to a specific character#I think that sort of abstract 'hope' is a 'hope for the future' idea. hope's peak's thing is#if you graduate your *future* is guaranteed#so no wonder naegi gets crowned ultimate hope. he's ultimate hope for thinking to the future no matter what#and yeah the fact komaeda for all his 'I'm nothing compared to you ultimates' talk still REALLY identifies himself by/with luck talent#(and I can't blame him for it bc once you have THat much weird luck stuff happen to you you gotta start questioning if luck's#just screwing with you) where most people (naegi) might go 'wow that's lucky/unlucky' and move on and not define themselves by 'luck'#good point too on the reason naegi went to hope's peak vs Hinata's 'I wanted to go somewhere I can be confident in myself'#i do also find it interestng how you can see how the successive dr games extend the idea of what hope 'should' be#that dr1 naegi's hope is hope for the future despite present uncertainty and despair#then dr2 denounces tying hope to talent and instead suggests hope comes from believing in yourself and others#then udg suggests hope comes from reaching out to and sticking with friends#gosh yeah every so often I think about what if hinata learned about the lucky student system how much he'd hate it/the fact he wasn't chose#for it (though I don't think being a lucky student (or having a talent at all tbh) would have given hinata the confidence he wants)#and YEAH on the 'what do you mean you're at Hope's Peak and you don't care about TALENT' hinata also buys so hard into hope's peak#talent superiority narrative and that's why he's not all that happy before dr2#anyway sorry for writing a whole essay in your tags but op this is such a good naegi analysis post that also ties into the#the overarching main ideas of the game#dr#dr talk
