Hannibal Lecter is also such a good example of a character who causes their own problems at a very fundamental level. Hannibal is always searching for connection, always probing his patients to see if any of them are angry enough and broken enough to match him.

He’s lonely. He’s starved for affection. When he does find his match, he destroys his entire life for him multiple times. He goes to prison because he can’t get over Will. He makes grand, sweeping, fucked up romantic gestures.

But the reason that Hannibal is so alone is because he’s a monster. He’s starved for affection because (almost) no one could hold genuine affection for what he does, and what he does is a deliberate and specific choice. Hannibal’s kills are only portrayed as impulsive in Italy, when it’s used as a tool to show how far he’s fallen. Even then, it’s not compulsive—Hannibal isn’t driven by a Need To Kill, he’s just shown as making bad decisions.

He is lonely and isolated as a direct and appropriate result of his actions, and any sympathy that his situation engenders always has to be balanced with the knowledge that he’d chosen this over and over and over again.

Hannibal: Someone killed the bailiff and the judge, so now people think you actually might be innocent 

Will: ok cool, but why would the killer do that?
