The Good Inevitable; “Are contemporary people too much reliant on technology?”
Technology is vital in our everyday life. A person must be dreaming if he/she thinks our society can still function without it. It has changed the many ways we work as "contemporary" and interactive beings for efficiency. The convenience that it offers to us limited human beings is its selling point. According to the 2020 Global Digital Overview by Data Reportal, "more than 5.19 billion people now use mobile phones, globally, with the average internet user now spending 6 hours and 43 minutes online each day." We are in a time of conversion, bit by bit, the way we do things traditionally has changed. Canvass paintings turned into JPGs, blocky textbooks, and various learning materials turned into PDFs, clacky folders of files turned into word documents in the cloud, and millions of cash bills turned into e-money, etc. It is hard to name anything that has not been replaced by the expansion of modern technology.
Tumblr media
Based on the many experiences we have had, especially during this pandemic, we can vividly observe how we have become reliant on technology. However, it should not have to be a bad thing. Although our generation has become too reliant on technology, it should not be perceived negatively.
The development of technology is a homage to human intelligence. The Earth has existed for a very long time. It is estimated to be at least 4.54 billion years old (National Geographic Society, n.d.). On the other hand, humans started to use stone tools with only 2.5 mya (Wilford, 2002). However, despite their short existence, they have changed the planet unimaginably. A factor of this is the ability of the species to think differently compared to others. Their capability of thinking ideas to make their lives easier eventually lead to the technology we have today.
The current circumstance where some are negatively perceiving how people of today are giving justice to the fruits of hard work and innovation from the past generation is ironic. Our godfathers developed technology for these specific reasons: to ease our lives and to help the disabled. Micah Altman, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and chief scientist for the MIT Libraries Knowledge Science Program, wrote, “In the last 50 years, the internet has been transformative and disruptive. In the next 50, information, communication, and AI technology show every sign of being even more so."  However, many people also believe that we can manipulate this development to change humanity positively. Stephen Hawking, the iconic Theoretical physicist, himself said that "Intelligence is the ability to adapt change" and with that, despite the possibility of "computers (AI) overtaking humanity in a hundred years", we humans have the capability "to make sure that these computers align their goals with ours."
There is a good and bad to everything, so we should strive to balance. As to how many scientists, professionals, and philosophers such as Aristotle believed that there is a golden mean in everything, understanding both the negative and positive effects of certain situations help us develop ourselves in pursuit of development. In terms of the current generation, addiction to technology is a different story. I believe that it is solely the individual's responsibility on how he/she should handle the technology available to them and not blame the ever-amazing work of the genius and talented.
The development of technology is inevitable, but also remember that we created this technology with our power to change, think, and feel. Despite our biological limitations, I believe that even though the day may come where technology will conquer most of our lives, we can still drive for the better.

A take on Analyzing different ways of speech delivery.
Tumblr media
Nelson Mandela
On 1994, history was made on South Africa as Neslon Mandela was elected the First Democratic President of the country. Over the course of his revolutionary 5-year term, he made great changes to his nation, teaming up with America and other nations to give a second hope for South Africa. As he informed his nation about their achievents, and as he gave wisdom, he inspired a lot through his voice, spiting change in the nation who had just fled from a regime of racism and segregation. Through his speeches and address to the nation, he was able to encourage open communication towards freedom, justice, and forgiveness.
Tumblr media
Emma Watson
Emma Watson is a British Actress and Model, she was a speaker on the United Nation's HeForShe campaign, a solidarity movement for gender equality, last 2014. Reflecting on her past experiences as a growing woman, she remembers instances wherein her aggressiveness as a human being greatly affected people's perception of her. She questioned over many years, why all are not given equal treatment, and prefer to live by the humanity's conventional image of what a woman, and especially what a man should be. She has discussed the idea of feminism and it becoming synonymus to "man-hating". Her heartfelt way of delivering her persuasive speech touched the hearts of many, stating points that in order for gender equality to be achieved, harmful and destructive stereotypes of masculinity have to change.
Tumblr media
Darren Tay Wen Jie
During the 2016 Public Speaking World Championship, Darren Tay Wen Jie was delcared champion. He won, not only because of his message of empowernment, but also his method of delivery. Because of his entertaining approach of portraying his ideas, such as role playing, he was able to captivate the audience's attention to a substantial level. This boosted the morale of the speech and its influence. In the end, he was able to share effectively, securing his place in the championship.
The three examples of speech delivery shown here might be different and unique in its own way, but they shine and strike great influence nonetheless. This justifies the fact that whatever or however a speech is delivered, and eventhough some methods of speech delivery might be unfamiliar to our minds, it doesn't matter as long as the speaker or listener gets to interact and share their wisdom, ideologies, and beliefs with each other.

News Anchor “Raffy Teshiba Tulfo”
Tumblr media
Rafael "Raffy" Teshiba Tulfo, born on March 12, 1960, is a Filipino broadcast journalist whose work focuses on government and private sector issues. He is currently an anchor on "Frontline Pilipinas" - a Philippine television news broadcasting show broadcast by TV5 and OnePH, and many more. But more prominently, he is famously known for his weekday afternoon radio program "Wanted Sa Radyo" on Radyo 5 92.3 News FM. The program focuses on aiding the poor and on issues with domestic affairs and other societal injustices.
Observing his performance as a news anchor on Frontline Pilipinas, I can say that his way of introducing each news story is efficient. His cadence is calm and soothing; his facial expressions are monotone; he speaks clearly and is well-dictated. And you can also tell that he breathes through his diaphragm when he delivers, giving him the ability to talk more without pausing. All these verbal and non-verbal cues are vital to news anchors to guide the audience through the news without getting distracted nor startled.
Until recently, the said anchor who is also the host of "Wanted sa Radyo" earned the name "Idol Raffy", for his acts in bridging people who are in conflict and are unable to communicate correctly. During these moments, you see a different Raffy Tulfo. It is observable that his wording in this show is more firm and straight to the point while maintaining his calm cadence. He is not afraid to jab, curse, and face the wrongdoers, especially if he knows who's responsible for the issue, which is admirable. You can say that he and his show is a Channel (element of communication) for conflicted people and people who have no power to raise their voice and express their emotions and opinions while letting the audience learn lessons and insights at the same time.
Overall, I can say that Sir Raffy Tulfo is definitely an example and an icon of justice to appreciate and look up to.

“The King’s Speech” Movie Synopsis and Analysis
By: Windolf Arrho L. Arcuino  (11-Competence)
Synopsis:
Dating back to the 1920s, Prince Albert, the Duke of York, suffers a speech impediment where he stammers when talking. Despite being part of the Royal Family and being raised to do public affairs, he has problems in doing so. After countless attempts seeking a cure from different therapists, they eventually stumbled upon Lionel Louge, a speech therapist from Australia. At first, Prince Albert wasn't sure about Lionel's ways, but after a long process of speech therapy, tongue twisters, and diaphragmatic exercises, the Duke's condition seemed better. Time passed as Prince Albert eventually had to step in on the throne as King George VI. Days into his monarchy, the King, unfortunately, discovered that Lionel was a quack. With the King's trust broken, Lionel had to explain himself saying, he never claimed to be a doctor and had earned experience from treating his fellow soldiers at war. And with a strong friendship, the King forgave Lionel. Years passed, and with help from his speech therapist, King George VI successfully delivered his first wartime speech on the declaration of war with Germany. King George VI lived to be a great king, leading the UK bravely through times of war and darkness.
Analysis:
The King's Speech is a Historical Film, directed by Tom Hooper and written by David Seidler. The film transports us back to the late 1920s featuring the story behind King Geoge VI and his monarchy. Played by Colin Firth, King George VI suffered a speech impediment where he stammers when he tries to communicate. To cope with this, he encounters Lionel Louge (played by Geoffrey Rush), a speech therapist from Australia, where they formed a friendship. Eventually, through years of therapy, King George VI was able to perform speeches in front of his people and the whole world.
Looking at the film technically, I was baffled how by how they were able to create scenes that embody England during Queen Elizabeth II's childhood. Movie Sets such as the Royal Palace fascinate me about their culture and the monarchy. Details, such as the casts' clothing, vintage items such as old cars, airplanes, cigarette containers, and as they like to call it, "wireless" microphones & radio, screams that they had a big budget making this film.
The dialogues were well-baked, words like "shan't" and other British slangs we're present. The actors were amazingly talented; the chemistry between each cast member is what made the film sell. Actor Colin's "stammering" was true-to-life, and once he had that mental breakdown, I couldn't help but feel his emotion too. I fell in love with Hellen Carter's (the Duke's Wife) performance once again, as she nailed this role and all the other roles she played in films such as Alice in Wonderland as the Red Queen and Cinderella's Fairy God-Mother. And of course, Mr. Geoffrey's perfectly embodied how sagacious Lionel was.
But of course, despite its wonders, the film was not historically accurate. According to The New Republic Website, the picture forgot to mention that David, the Prince of Wales, at that time was also "an ardent admirer of Hitler and fascism." The film had to cater to a broader audience; thus, they sanitized his character and others too. But overall, this does not dim the light of the film's message. And the film's purpose itself.
One thing that made this film a hit for me was the fact that this film focused on the lives of the Royale Family behind their public facade. Showcasing the struggles of these people, these people on pedestals, seeing how they also suffer hardships and conflicts within themselves, remind us that no human is truly secure in this world. The story of how King George VI grew from a traumatized and confused duke to a great and noble king inspires me to improve in any way possible too. I could easily see that King George's stammers made him socially anxious.  I bear similar internal conflicts that affect my performance as a student, but slowly I am making strides to be a better communicator verbally.  I want to improve; thus, I believe I can. I thank this film for showing me that.

In our first few lessons, we learned all about Conic Sections: a figure formed when a plane intersects a double right circular cone. There are 3 types of Conic Sections: a Parabola, a Hyperbola, and an Ellipse, each with their own unique characteristics.
There are many things that I learned in this lesson, one of which is how conic sections relate to real life and real life structures. Because of conic sections mathematicians, engineers, and people in general now have the ability to create bridges, whispering chambers, and many more buildings where we can see conic sections in them.
It is a wonderful thing indeed.

Jimmy Nelson- an English photographer, talked about his journey through many years of his profession and the lessons that come with them.
It all started when he went to Northern Mongolia to document the Tsaatan Indigenous Tribe. He wanted to showcase the tribe through pictures. After months of traveling & two weeks of hiking through a frozen valley, he finally found them. But unfortunately, the only medium he can use to communicate with the tribe was faux.  But to his surprise, he eventually went home with a beautiful picture of the tribe. But how?
Two weeks into following the Tsaatans, he eventually found a way to communicate with them through humility. He and the tribe understood each other not because of the translator, but because of human perception.
As I ponder on his experience, I then recalled the idea of how human communication developed. The first humans did not communicate through words but still managed to form tribes, like the Tsaatans, wherein they bonded and survived. They eventually learned to make sounds with their mouths and link them to an idea, signal or thought.
Astonishing, as I thought to myself: the power to communicate, perceive, and evolve.
Today, verbal communication plays a vital role in society. It serves as the primary way to express our opinions and experiences to other people.  But sometimes, we also tend to forget that the most heartfelt way of communicating is through love, humility, and action.
Communicating with others through love, humility, and action hits differently compared to just talking with words. You might say you love someone or something, but without any action, you cannot justify that love.
In the Philippines, a lot of politicians say they serve because they love our country. But the truth is, a lot of politicians serve because they don't love our country; they love the money they receive from it.
During the pandemic, the truth on many corrupt acts selfish politicians did has been revealed. It is shameful to present what humankind has become to our ancestors. So we: the future of our nation, should not take an example of these mistakes. Instead, we should tread on a new path, believing in how we can still fix this world through love and upright communication.
Who knows, this might be the answer to enlightenment itself.

Humans have not been present on Earth for a long time, but our species has caused the most amount of change on this planet. Because of our ability to express our ideas and thoughts in complex and intricate ways, several scholars have invested their time in understanding and developing ways to understand this gift. Thus, the models of communications were created.
We were tasked to create our take on the models of communication; this is my interpretation of communication based on the ideas of other theorists.
Communication is a process of exchanging ideas, emotions, and perceptions between one person to another. In order to communicate, there must be a sender and a receiver of information. The sender encodes a message through a medium: a phone call or just plain talking. On the other hand, the receiver analyzes/decodes the information given to give feedback back to the sender. To communicate effectively, both parties must exchange thoughts to get a specific point of view on a topic. Hence, the sender and receiver must exchange roles in doing so.
Other factors affect communication too, take an example of the Communication Environment. Depending on the conversation setting, the way the message is conveyed from one person to another is altered; formal conversations are created at work settings, while more personal conversations are done at home or on dates.
There are many more factors that affect how communication goes. But the most crucial thing to communicating is, having empathy and understanding to whom you are conversing.

Following the theme of sugar and candy,  this slogan represents one of the crucial issues we have today in this pandemic.
In these times, manipulated news is a big problem.  Altered facts received from sources are fed to the general public to spread optimism and hope; which is wrong since that optimism can often lead to misunderstandings and mistakes.
Some people also tend to exaggerate good news to a level where it tarnishes the truth. Because of this, some people think that the pandemic is curving down, but it's not. The state of our country is going more downhill as time passes.
Take the example of our city. Ormoc, despite the government doing tremendous work protecting its people from the virus. Some citizens are relying too much on their protection. This leads to a lot of them going outside for leisure purposes and not of requirement. Now we have the price to pay: the 2nd wave of the virus we are currently under in.
What we should do today is base our thoughts about the pandemic on real records and not on the opinions of other people whose drive to work is fed by politics and selfish benefit. And even though human psychology plays a role in why we break protocols from time to time, we should discipline ourselves from doing so. Hence the thought, "treat yourself some sour truths instead of sugar-coated lies."
