Man is my life happier in general on a personal level but boy did it come at the cost of all my creative endeavors. Not even in a stupid 'I'm happy now so I don't have the ~torture~ fueling my art' bullshit kind of way. There's just been no time. And when there's been time there's been very little physical ability. Rinse repeat. Fingers crossed, after the move, this winter I'll actually be able to have both.

Realized that the reason Date Everything doesn't have any characters that appeal to me is because not a single femme-bodied character has visible body hair as far as I've been able to find has really cemented that I have a Type(tm) now and I'm going to have an extra hard time finding it in fiction.

It's pride month so I'll allow myself to express one opinion on the internet :

There are no "exact color" of pride flags.

I see more and more sites and posts talking about the exact hex codes for the lesbian flag, or the right purple for the ace one, and how it should be more or less saturated and I just want to say: pride flags were meant to be sewn in your kitchen. To be spraypainted and to be recognised.

There are no "exact colors" of pride flags because you should do them with what you have ! Nobody should care if you use a crimson red instead of a cherry red or whatever ! Be free ! wave your colors ! The colors you have !

Now that I can put more than two braincells together, I'll elaborate:

Magic is often used in very flashy ways. It's very 'the first human invention was the weapon' kinda vibes. I'm very partial to 'the first human invention was the bag' theory instead. We were gatherers before we were hunters. We needed ways to carry things we gathered. Bag comes before spear.

If you have magic that's common, what does it get used for? Most people aren't going to be out fighting dragons. So what do their ice spells do? What does their 'mage hand's get used for? What does magic do to function in and be a function of the world that people actually live in day by day? And if magic is rare or less common what does that do to the lived experiences of average people? If magic is at least semi-regular but treated with hostility... why? And I'm going to be honest with you; 'because it's dangerous' has always rung very hollow to me. 'It's scary and we don't understand it' is the only reasoning I can think of that's worse. Yeah, humans have been known to react poorly to things we don't understand. And yet we keep making technological advancements all the time that only a fraction of the population has any real understanding of. We play with forces in our homes every day that can and have killed people who made them/work on them. Human responses to that threat is very rarely to outright condemn it forever, instead it's to figure out how to do it safer.

I think that fantasy designers also can under appreciate how the tide of popular thinking among common folk can and has effected change among the 'elites' in the history that most fantasy is at least drawing from aesthetically.

Before we start worrying about fireball, people are going to want to know a fire spell that keeps their ovens lit without fuel, or their forges burning at just the right temperature. Everyday people have made the vast majority of human innovations we take for granted, and they did it to make something in their lives easier, or even just possible. Remember that when you're constructing your magic systems.

Stop thinking about magic systems as swords and start thinking about them as kitchen utensils.

Not to go "if you have ADHD just go for a run" or anything, but I am so serious if you have ADHD you should regularly go outside, no headphones no phone no nothing and just stand and observe for a while until you've had enough. Not until you get bored, until you've had enough. Drink your coffee without watching tiktok. Have a bath without music. Turn down the volume in your headphones. I cannot overstate how much learning to be bored is cruicial with ADHD. Life is not just about pleasure, no matter what your dysregulated dopamine system thinks, and when you teach your brain to be okay with being bored, then boring tasks stop feeling like torture. By letting yourself be bored you are yoinking your system out of the high/low binary and allow for the highs to feel like actual highs and not just anything that isn't low. I am so serious go literally touch grass. Listen to the sounds in your flat. Stimulate your body the way it was designed. It lowers anxiety and makes you feel like you're real and best of all it's completely free
