Crazy how like 90% of the United States' involvement in WW2 stemmed from our competition with Japan for colonial conquests in the Pacific which happened to lead us into our only anti-fascist alliance in our entire history which was de facto abandoned before the war was even over for the more important goal of containing communism and this has been reframed in the decades since as "the United States beat the Nazis"

This is not related to my blog, but it's personally important. Please read it.

It breaks my heart to know that I'm so unwelcome in my own country. So far I've wanted to leave for an opportunity at a better life, because it's becoming impossible to be well off financially here. But now I want to leave out of fear for my safety. This enables homophobic and transphobic attacks.

I'm out publicly, people know of my identity. I live in a small town inna bigoted country, it was dangerous enough already to come out like this. But now? Now that the aggressive people see that the government is with them? Now I'm truly terrified. I can only hope I will be lucky enough not to be targeted, but I know many, many others will become victims. This is not okay.

It just adds insult to injury that they do this during pride month of all times.

sure. let's start with what the EU does to its own member states--in 2009, the EU bailed the greek government out of severe debt on the condition that they establish brutal austerity measures, cutting public spending and welfare. these measures served to immiserate and destroy the lives of thousands of greek people:

Since the implementation of the austerity programme, Greece has reduced its ratio of health-care expenditure to GDP to one of the lowest within the EU, with 50% less public hospital funding in 2015 than in 2009. This reduction has left hospitals with a deficit in basic supplies, while consumers are challenged by transient drug shortages.

the most brutal treatment, however, the EU of course reserves for migrants from the global south. the EU sets strict migration quotas and uses its member states as weapons against desperate people fleeing across the mediterranean. boats are prevented from landing, migrants that do make it to land are repelled with brutal violence, and refugees are deported back to countries where their lives are in lethal danger. these policies have led to many, many deaths--and the refugees and migrants who do survive are treating fucking inhumanely.

Just your reminder that the British treated Jews horrifically. They sent ships of Jewish refugees back to Europe where they were killed by the Nazis, they imprisoned Holocaust survivors who had lost their homes, they refused to take in Germany's Jews during the Evían conference. The first ever blood libel was in England, and England was the first European country to expell its Jews.

The most important thing in the battle about the “abortion problem” is that abortions should be safe, free and widely available to people who need or “want” them. Literally. That is all. Even before the overturning of Roe v. Wade, we were fighting a battle for that. We can argue about societal factors in the need for abortions after abortions are restored as a human right and made available. Now is not the time to spend your energy analyzing it. People are dying. There will always be a need for abortion, no matter what. There will never be a time where every pregnancy conceived is viable and wanted. That is not biologically possible.

I am saying this because I see comments all the time that are like “Abortion is a necessary evil. In an ideal world there will be no need for it. If only pregnant people had the resources to keep their precious little babies. But they don’t so I guess I’m pro-choice 🥺” and it makes me irate because that is not the core of the cause of the need for abortion. You are feeding into the misogyny the right has poured into the abortion debate by pretending it is caused by the downfall of the nuclear family and not a basic human need that will always exist. Unlearn that preconceived notion about what abortion is and who is getting them.
