Jayâs Paperbook of Poems |
Jay(a)
Before we start this time, let me make a little side note. I love this song. Iâm a big fan of Radiohead, Iâm a big fan of The Bends, and Iâm the biggest fan of (Nice Dream). Itâs the lyrics, itâs the way itâs sung, the melody, the end DEAR GOD the freaking endâŠ.. I love it. Itâs my entire personality, it tells my whole story, I just connect with it. The lyrics touch my heart and made me tear up on several different occasions, twice in public when I was listening to it with my sister. Itâs just. On a different level in my opinion. If youâve never listened to the song, I URGEEE you to not spend another second in your life without listening to it. Now if you go, it starts weak, I know. Wait for it. (At least if youâre like me because my sister says this is one of the worst Radiohead songs) also fun fact! This song played on âHow I Met Your Motherâ when Ted got into a car crash when taking a Taxi! And when his friends were called to the hospital. Anyways,
âThey love me like I was a brother, they protect me, listen to meâ
Let me start with, âAs iron sharpens iron, brother sharpens brotherâ, and continue with saying this will be about Skybound Jay, so prepare yourself for the angst (and for fanon input). The scene Iâm having in mind is Jay in his cell, retelling his sweeter moments in life in his head. If you donât know the song, itâs talking about more of an imaginary, I-know-itâll-never-happen-but-itâs-nice-to-think-about kinda scenario. So this is prisoner Jay, lost all hope of his friends actually coming, so now heâs kinda accepting his situation and replays his life âIâve lived a good lifeâ kind of moment (also like how your brain replays your life 7 minutes while you die or something?). Anyways after years of isolation, Jay is accepted into a bigger family with a ton of brothers and sister, and he couldnât be happier to be recognized as a brother to them. They protect him, they listen to him
âThey dug me my very own garden, gave me sunshine, make me happyâ
Now for me, the garden isnât flowers or vegetables or any of that, but rather a metaphor. Whats a garden? Itâs a place that holds duplicates of the same thing, that are still so different. Each thing grows differently, natured a little more/less. I find the garden to be some kind of happy memory garden that the ninja dug Jay. Sunshine that helped him grow as a person (mentally and physically)
âNice dreamâ x3
Now Jay is recognizing the situation to be a complete daydream that would just not take place ever again
âI call up my friend, the good Angel, but sheâs out with her answerphone. She says that sheâd love to come help, but, the sea would electrocute us allâ
I connected between the two lines because I think theyâre very important for interpretation. Personally, mention of a âsheâ, âseaâ, and âangelâ when itâs from Jayâs point of view. Itâs totally Nya. I think thatâs Jay trying to find comfort in thinking about Nya, but remember that water and lightning cannot go together, and is bluntly attacked by his memories about the times heâs wronged her, or misunderstood her. Specifically a scene I have in mind is when they were undercover, and Jay tried to buy lunch for them both (though Nya ended up paying). They say down, and Nya explained that she loves him (sheâd love to come help) as a friend (but the sea would electrocute us all). So Jay brings Nya up (call up my friend, the good Angel), only to have it completely handed back to him (but sheâs out with her answerphone, aka sheâs not answering, she isnât reciprocating.)
âNice dreamâ x7
I like that it repeats, because itâs a painful reminder for, this case, Jay, that what heâs now yearning for, will never actually occur, and he wonât be able to achieve that sort of peace. Ever.
â(If you think that youâre strong enough) Nice dream (if you think you belong enough) Nice dreamâ x2
The crippling anxiety and regret sliding into Jayâs daydream. Maybe he hears the pirates, maybe he keeps remembering he isnât strong enough and will soon be done for, maybe he remembers that so long as he thinks heâs still a part of the team, heâll manage to hold hope that he will be rescued. Remember, Jay is faced with Physical and Mental challenges on that ship. He keeps telling himself âjust a little moreâ (if you think that youâre strong enough) âitâs going to be okayâ (nice dream) âtheyâre coming soonâ (if you think you belong enough) âI will be okayâ (nice dream)
âIâm coming homeâ x4
After those horrific, realistic thoughts, Jay is coming back âhomeâ, aka to his daydream euphoria. He just isnât able to cope with his reality as a hopeless prisoner, with everything being his fault, with everything he went through, he doesnât want to understand his situation, but run away from it.
âNice dreamâ x4
And thatâs him running away from it.
