I look forward to more people discovering just how impactful what Jodie Whittaker did as the 13th doctor was.
To me, she ran her own marathon at a sprint, breaking down boundaries without so much as a word for those who had put them in place.
And she seemingly did it all with joy, and respect, and kindness (jfc if you ever get the chance to meet her she is so kind I cannot put it into words).
She is an incredible ambassador for the ability of representation to inspire, to recognise, to reconfigure (dare i say also to regenerate lol).
#Reblogging this one more time before I skedaddle from here for the forseeable#thirteenth doctor#jodie whittaker#Doctor who

i think the worst thing about the whole “anti-woke” culture is how it’s not only dumbing down people (folks are literally forgetting pronouns are an actual word class, an inseperable part of grammar and everyday speech) but also praising meanness and insensibility above all. it has managed to make malice and unkindness synonymous with factfulness and reason as if intelligence didn’t stem from emotions. as if feelings weren’t the very core of human beings. as if knowledge wasn’t achieved through passion, sympathy, and open-mindedness. as if the whole crux of this entire anti-wokeness movement wasn’t rooted in pure unadulterated emotion of hatred and hostility.
#This exactly#this has fuelled the tories horrid hatred of people with mental illness and disabilities I think#I mean they’ve always been like that but it’s driven it further

actually that ao3 post about calculating kudos-to-hits ratios to decide if a fic is worth reading has me so pissed off. someone put real time and energy into something they are SHARING WITH YOU FOR FREE on a site where you can quite literally filter and search by anything you want and you're STILL trying to find a foolproof method to find stuff that's "good enough to read"???
YOU ARE NOT THE TARGET AUDIENCE FOR EVERYTHING
you don't have to like or read everything in a given fandom or tag, but you also don't have to be a cunt about it and imply that it's not worth reading. this is the kind of shit that moves people to stop creating altogether, and to see people agreeing in the tags is so disheartening. absolutely unserious behavior.

I just have to remind myself sometimes that no matter what anyone else says, the way a piece of media makes me feel and the positive impact it has had on my queer identity is valid, and that tearing myself apart thinking I have to defend it or questioning my own place within queer communities is not at all important when compared to the almost tangible sense of 'rightness' that piece of media helped me to feel about myself.

The way RTD has handled the Thirteenth Doctor's legacy so far makes me really uneasy, to be honest. And I don't mean plot elements (it's really positive that he's leaning into the timeless child so much so far!), I mean how (imo) Jodie's doctor reconfigured who the Doctor can be and who can see themselves in the Doctor.
Her doctor is the first 'woman doctor' but that is not to consign her, nor is it to put assumptions on who her doctor might/should be. The understanding of what 'woman' means felt reconfigured, expanded upon- she's an alien, she's not going to play by the rules some humans love to put on such a designator! It's a possibility not compulsory, a jumping off point for fluid ideas about the self. Her costume is a recognisable representation of this idea- intended by Jodie to be genderfluid, for anyone to wear. It is both inclusive and expansive, beyond binary (there's so much I could say about her performance to which this also applies).*
So, RTD seemingly not understanding this, or perhaps not willing to stand by this decision and instead bowing to how bigots might react (so putting their binary, restricted understanding ahead of those who celebrated Jodie's doctor and felt represented by her in importance?), and getting rid of her costume feels... disheartening.
So yeah, I'm uneasy about how 13 might be referenced or represented in any way going forward. It's usually fun when a current doctor references a past self, but so far, 13's costumes been incinerated and RTD's dropped in some really (imo) stupid jokes about 'the woman doctor.' We've seen very little of his tenure yet, and I don't want to put my cart before my horses but it's not a great start.
It gives the impression that he took his own understanding of what the 'woman doctor' should mean as his compass rather than engaging with Jodie's doctor, honestly. We shall see, and I want to be optimistic, but it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
*This is not to say that the doctors that came before Jodie don't also offer sights of reconfiguration. I really like that her predecessors, to some extent, also break down ideas about male-presenting characters. But her doctor is a clear break with the status quo (she's not portrayed by a cis, white man)

Seeing a post about how sexism is a good compromise for a ‘good’ episode of Doctor Who get thousands of likes is both aggravating and depressing. That the discrimination of women is less important to those people makes complete sense of why some people just aren’t willing to ever enjoy a 13 episode, or her as a Doctor.
It is really kind of soul destroying (?) to see such an opinion widely agreed with when posts discussing and raising concerns about misogyny and sexism within the show and the fan base get such little traction, or a whole heap of vitriol.
Stupid opinion. But what would I know, I’m just a woman.
