If you are looking for a marketing or web company to help you set up a new online presence
In the absence of external information, that would certainly seem a smart choice. After all, an armful of metal (or acrylic) paperweights is a sign that a designer or team is well respected within the industry and celebrated by their colleagues. Except of course if that performance does not mean that at all.
It turns out that some prizes are not as prestigious as they seem. I know this firsthand, because I played the award game earlier in my career.
Nonsense do you say? Let's look at a few things that plague this field ...
1. It is a Pay-for-Play Award model Let me explain how some (almost all) prizes are awarded. They start when a sector group or marketing organization sends out a call for submissions. Normally there is a range of categories, so companies can submit multiple entries.
The registration period takes some time and 'booking costs' are collected for each. The whole thing culminates with a party or event where the prizes are awarded. Almost everyone gets a trophy to take to the office.
Although it is never explicitly mentioned, there is a clear pay-for-play model here. The participating companies submit their work for a fee (often $ 75-250 each) and as an advantage of winning they get the chance to promote their agencies as award-winning. That may be good news for their marketing and sales activities (because it is one), but it does not help entrepreneurs make informed decisions about who they can trust.
2. Some companies give back in a way with a backhand Another way that many agencies earn prizes is almost as sinister. These are creative teams that donate their time to non-profit organizations or goals in exchange for full creative freedom. This means that the web designer agrees to devise a layout for free, but the charity in question has no control over what they receive in return. The argument of the office is that paying customers would never give them such a creative license.
This allows the web design team to flex their creative muscles without having to worry about limitations, such as real-world results. They can experiment with unusual visuals, counterintuitive navigation menus or strange font and color combinations. Or maybe they just leave an F-bomb in the head for effect. The result is unconventional, which means that they will probably win a prize for it. However, the finished product may (usually not) have much business value for the charity that receives it.
Kayak Online Marketing is all about giving back to the community, and we donate our services several times a year to groups that we think they can benefit from, such as Habitat for Humanity. Thinking of strange web designs only to win prizes is not worthwhile for us and would not be conducive to the groups we sincerely want to help.
3. The real prize is the hardest to win Another reason why I subscribe to the value of awards is that they do not have much value for real customers. The accolades are almost always given on the basis of aesthetics, not in practice.
Admittedly, there is a connection between the two, but it is not always as strong as you might think. You can create a web layout that looks good, but does nothing to improve or generate your search positionreal leads. In the same way, prospects will come to your pages - and return to them - based on the strength of your information and your ability to engage your buyer personas, not because it was beautiful or contained an F-bomb.
In our world, the biggest prize you can win is a successful result for your customer. That means a website that changes websites and changes their business. If they are going to give rewards for that, I will pay more attention.
Where are you really looking for a designer and a consultant? Let's face it: the reason why the design industry knows these problems with prices is because entrepreneurs and creative directors know that you will be impressed. It is a cognitive distortion that they use. So it is up to you to be a bit smarter and more critical in your thinking.
Certainly, if you see that a creative team you want to work with has won prizes, that is not a bad thing. But you should not be misled by thinking that you have more information than you actually do.
Pay attention to prices when you look at web designers, just as you would have samples and customer responses. However, if you are looking for real-world results with your next website - in the form of real lead generation, for example, then that should be the focus of your search. View case studies and verified results. Listen to their long-term plans. And above all, see if they can back up their claims by winning prizes they do not pay to receive.
Follow these steps and you will find a design team that can win the ultimate web design award by helping you create more business opportunities through your website.
