I think a good amount of it isn't that people don't care about symbolism, they don't care for when and how they were told to think about symbolism. Highschool sucked for a lot of people and "maybe the curtains are just fucking blue, ever think about that?" could just as likely be the result of a teacher talking down to a student about this when they didn't immediately get it.
I'll never understand the "curtains are just blue sometimes" people. I was soooo fucking excited learning about symbolism. You have a story and what the story tells you. Then you have the fact that it was written at all by someone and that's another story. And then there's also hidden extra story info?

My favorite Giuseppe Festino covers from near the end of his run with the Italian sci-fi magazine Robot. These are from late 1978 and 1979. Bold colors, bold compositions.
I featured Festino's work in my free sci-fi art newsletter a few issues back, so check it out for more info. The final one here, with the decaying robot, was for the last issue of the magazine, before it was rebooted in the 2000s.

I was born to be a weird mad scientist on the edge of town. I'm not working towards retirement, I'm working towards having the time and space to work on my strange little projects and occasionally annoy the townsfolk
stop freaking out about getting old and start planning out what kind of old person you're gonna be
