Error Bars Tutorial (With Standard Deviation)- Using Microsoft Word
Have different standard deviations for each data point? Not a graphing whiz? Having trouble inserting your error bars? Look no further!
Ok so I’m using Microsoft Word 2007, but it should be fairly similar for all versions … Firstly you want to go to “Insert” > “Chart” and pick the kind of graph you want. I’m going to go with a scatter plot.
Tumblr media
After you select your chart, (you can change the layout of the graph using “Quick Layout” like i did) a microsoft excel window will automatically open alongside word. This is the window in which you will enter your data in (x,y) format.
Tumblr media
After entering in your data (i’ve picked random numbers as an example) you’re going to want to create your own row underneath all that, and enter in your standard deviation points (in relation to the x,y points entered above).
So for example, 4.5 is the standard deviation value that goes along with the point (0.7, 2.7), 6.3 is the standard deviation value that goes along with the point (1.8, 3.2) etc.
You’re screen should now look something like this:
Tumblr media
Next you want to close the excel window and go back to your graph. Under “Layout”, select “Error Bars” and then “More Error Bar Options” under the drop down menu.
Tumblr media
Then once the box pops up, you tick off the bubble that says “Custom Values" and then "Specify Value" Now your window should look something like this:
Tumblr media
We’re almost done! Now this will lead you once again to the alongside excel sheet with a little box that says ‘Custom Error Bars’. Use your cursor to highlight that entire row of standard deviations that we entered in earlier. Then hit "Ok”
Tumblr media
Close your excel sheet and ta da! Error bars have appeared on your graph. You can now delete the horizontal ones if you do not want them, or the vertical ones by clicking and hitting “Delete” on your keyboard… Your graph will end up looking something like this:
Tumblr media
Voila! You’re now an error bar pro! Happy lab writing :)
