The mount of Rhaenys Targaryen the First, the second sister-wife to Aegon the Conqueror. During the time of the Conquest, Meraxes was bigger than Vhagar but smaller than Balerion. It can be said that Meraxes was the most Targaryen-looking dragon, as she had silver scales and golden eyes, much like the trademark hair of the Targaryens.
The she-dragon who was named after one of the old gods of Valyria was an incredible sight. Terrifying, yet curious and adventurous, she loved Rhaenys, who was her sole rider. Their bond was strong and it was said that Rhaenys spent more time riding than both her siblings combined.
Meraxes, along with Vhagar, were the first dragons to hatch on Dragonstone, while Balerion was born and grew up in Old Valyria. There could have also been a chance that Meraxes laid a clutch of eggs before her untimely death.

Nobody tells you that 90% of being a fic writer is telling yourself sternly that you CANNOT start a new wip until you finish one of the old ones, and then failing to write anything at all as your brain sulks like a toddler.

As the moon rose above the grasslands, Dany slipped at last into a restless sleep.
She dreamed. All her cares fell away from her, and all her pains as well, and she seemed to float upward into the sky. She was flying once again, spinning, laughing, dancing, as the stars wheeled around her and whispered secrets in her ear. “To go north, you must journey south. To reach the west, you must go east. To go forward, you must go back. To touch the light you must pass beneath the shadow.”
“Quaithe?” Dany called. “Where are you, Quaithe?”
Then she saw. Her mask is made of starlight.
“Remember who you are, Daenerys,” the stars whispered in a woman’s voice. “The dragons know. Do you?”

Hi! I like Dany alot but after the show, reading her chapters in ADWD scares me a bit. I never thought about the Meereen plot before but everyone seems to think that's the foreshadowing for her being a tyrant/villain? Or maybe that's just in the show. Why do you think GRRM makes Dany struggle so much in Meereen? Is he going a similar route to the show?
I think Daenerys struggles ruling in Meereen for the same reason Jon struggles when he's Lord Commander despite being elected by popular vote, and for the same reason Robb struggles as king in ASOS despite winning all his battles: ruling is hard. And being a protagonist in ASOIAF doesn't erase that.
To be clear, the show has no bearing here. This blog is for the books, and especially in the case of Dany's Meereen storyline, the show and the books are on completely different ends of the spectrum.
Frankly, given the blatant parallels of Jon and Daenerys's storylines in ADWD (and in the other books, to be honest), I find it ridiculous that people use her arc as evidence that she is a villain/a tyrant/going mad, etc. Both are in difficult, unique ruling positions, they're 16/17 years old at most, and despite their mistakes, both have legitimate, unselfish motives (saving as many lives as possible). Why would this be foreshadowing for Dany's downfall but not Jon's?
A lot of this also comes down to people forgetting to take GRRM's writing style into account when they theorize. Martin is notably against making things easy for his characters; he always has been. Daenerys having trouble in Meereen isn't much different than Robb struggling with the Karstarks' betrayal, losing Winterfell, and juggling alliances post AGOT--the only difference is we don't get to be in Robb's head during that, while we get to see exactly what's going on with characters like Daenerys and Jon.
The point is not only that ruling is hard, but ruling well is hard. When is the law just? When is it unfair? When is peace legitimate?
Robb said it best: "Gods be good, why would any man want to be king?"
