Announcing the new release of WALLS AND PALS

[Pals FM: Floor Materials Vol.2]

[Pals FM: Floor Materials Vol.2] is the second dance music compilation from WALLS AND PALS. The aim is to share various ideas of dance floors instead of lingering on a certain genre or style, and while being DJ Friendly, it also serves as an exchange ground where production techniques of artists co-exist. All four tracks in [Vol.2] correspond with the common purpose of bringing out ‘Floor Materials’, keeping distinct identity from each musician.

In ‘Cofrica’, rapper and producer Simo of Y2K92 injects his long-time affection of Detroit flavor into a minimalistic form. Conversely, DOTT from the Thai label More Rice brings intricate and complex rhythms centered around the step sequencer in ‘Antibody Movement’, walking a fine line between House and Techno while the essence of Tech House is preserved. And in ‘Pump It Up’, ACIDWORK demonstrates what the outcome would be when Electro runs through digital instruments and samplers. Last but not least, Seo John, who put out his first EP [DIVE] last year from the label GODDEZZ, follows up with ‘miQro’, creating a different side of Trance that is more adequate for clubs or concrete spaces rather than outdoor raves or festivals.

In the same manner with the preceding release [Pals FM: Floor Materials Vol.1], [Vol.2] is a compilation executed by fellow Asian musicians across the region. Beyond the reopened borders, and just like the excitement and stimulus at unusual events, this compilation serves to contribute to the dancefloor as an interesting ‘Material’ than simply as a ‘Tool’.

[Pals FM: Floor Materials Vol.2]는 WALLS AND PALS의 두 번째 댄스 음악 컴필레이션이다. 하나의 장르나 스타일에 머무르는 대신 댄스 플로어에 대한 여러 아이디어를 다루고자 했으며, 디제이 친화적인 동시에 프로듀서들의 작법이 공존하는 교류의 장을 지향한다. 그렇게 [Vol.2]는 수록된 네 트랙 모두 ‘Floor Materials’라는 공통의 의도 하에 서로 구별되는 정체성을 갖는다.

래퍼 겸 프로듀서 Simo of Y2K92가 ‘Cofrica’를 통해 그의 오랜 관심사인 디트로이트라는 키워드를 ‘미니멀’한 형식에 담았다면, 반대로 태국 레이블 More Rice의 DOTT는 ‘Antibody Movement’로 테크 하우스가 테크 하우스다울 때, 그 하우스와 테크노의 즐거운 경계에서 스텝 시퀀서 기반의 복잡다단한 리듬을 이끌어낸다. 일렉트로가 디지털 악기와 샘플러를 거치면 어떤 모습이 될 수 있는가에 대한 자문자답과 같은 ACIDWORK의 ‘Pump It Up’에 이어, 지난해 레이블 GODDEZZ에서 첫 EP [DIVE]를 발매한 Seo John은 ‘miQro’로 레이브나 페스티벌보다 클럽이나 콘크리트 공간과 더 친밀할 트랜스의 이면을 연출한다.

이처럼 [Vol.2] 또한 전작 [Pals FM: Floor Materials Vol.1]과 마찬가지로 아시아의 동료 음악가들이 모여 완성한 컴필레이션이다. 다시 열린 국경을 넘어 낯선 클럽 및 파티를 방문할 때의 긴장 혹은 자극과 같이, 목적성 뚜렷한 도구(Tool)보다는 사용법이 궁금한 재료(Material)의 형태로 댄스 플로어에 기여하고자 한다.

Announcing the new release of WALLS AND PALS [Pals FM: Floor Materials Vol.1]

[Pals FM: Floor Materials] is a compilation series for the dance floors. It is the second release of the label WALLS AND PALS, a follow up to the debut EP [Pure Elements…] by ACIDWORK last year. Fellow artists who got acquainted on dance floors or interacted by exchanging views about electronic/dance music each expressed their ideas of dance floors for this release.

But the focus of the compilation is on displaying free and creative ideas about dance floors rather than simply a ‘DJ Tool’ which normally leans more towards DJ’s convenience. In other words, it’s a project compiled with numerous forms of dance floor and time slot kept in mind, rather than just strictly ‘For Club Use’. That being so, this record is a modern dance compilation made by today’s DJs and producers from different cities, and at the same time, a piece of record that implies the virtue of classic 12”/Maxi single which includes various versions such as radio edits, dance remixes, instrumentals to explore a wide range of possibilities for the tracks and the record itself. Regardless of venue and time, It can’t go wrong to have such a record in a DJ’s record bag.

In [Vol.1], the starting point of the compilation series, label co-founders Mogwaa and Jesse You, Osaka’s producer GUCHI, and Klasse Wrecks co-owner Mr. Ho have contributed their own shares. A-side starts with Mogwaa’s ‘Provision 8216’, a dark dance floor groover with spatial texture, followed by GUCHI’s ‘THE FUTURE OF EMOTIONS’, a full-scale techno track deploying noise and arpeggio in a creative way. On the B-Side features ‘Silly and bright’, a sunset electro by Jesse You and ‘#1’, Mr. Ho’s funky burner where you can check out a different side from the producer. With everything put together, [Pals FM: Floor Materials] serves to work as a versatile ‘Material’ than as a ‘Tool’. [Pals FM: Floor Materials]는 댄스 플로어를 위한 음악을 담은 컴필레이션이다. 지난해 ACIDWORK의 데뷔 EP [Pure Elements…]에 이은 레이블 WALLS AND PALS의 두 번째 발매작이기도 하다. 댄스 플로어에서 만나 가까워졌거나, 혹은 전자 음악과 댄스 음악에 대한 이야기를 나누며 교류를 시작한 동료 음악가들이 각자 자신이 생각하는 댄스 플로어를 표현했다. 하지만 일반적으로 ‘툴(Tool)’이라 칭하는, 일반적으로 무엇보다 디제이의 편의를 고려한 레코드보다 댄스 플로어에 대한 더 자유로운 아이디어를 담고자 했다. 즉, 단호한 ‘For Club Use’라기보다 수많은 댄스 플로어의 형태와 다양한 시간대를 염두에 두고 엮은 기획에 가깝다. 그러니 이 레코드는 지금 여러 도시의 무대에서 활동하는 디제이 겸 프로듀서들이 만든 현대적 댄스 레코드인 동시에, 라디오 에디트부터 댄스 리믹스와 인스트루멘탈까지 한 장의 레코드로 곡과 매체의 가능성을 모두 시험해 본, 전통적 의미의 12’’/MAXI 싱글의 미덕 또한 포함한다고 볼 수 있다. 그런 레코드는 어떤 시기와 장소를 가정하든 예외 없이 레코드 가방에 넣어두기에 좋다. 컴필레이션 시리즈의 출발점인 [Vol.1]에는 WALLS AND PALS의 공동 설립자인 Mogwaa와 Jesse You, 오사카의 프로듀서 GUCHI, Klasse Wrecks를 이끄는 Mr. Ho가 참여했다. 저음과 공간감으로 어두운 댄스 플로어를 연출한 모과의 ‘Provision 8216’이 A면의 문을 열고, 노이즈와 아르페지오를 창의적으로 활용한 GUCHI의 본격 테크노 ‘THE FUTURE OF EMOTIONS’가 뒤따른다. B면엔 Jesse You의 일몰 일렉트로 ‘Silly and bright’, 그리고 Mr. Ho의 색다른 모습을 확인할 수 있는 훵키한 ‘#1’이 수록됐다. 이렇듯 [Pals FM: Floor Materials]는 도구(Tool)보다는 재료(Material)로서 유연하게 기능하고자 한다.

스스로를 제한된 구역으로 몰아넣고 그 안에서 최대치를 발휘할 때 마침내 생겨나는 소리의 미덕이 있다. 미니멀한 구성으로 ‘맥시멈 사운드’를 구축하는 작법이라 말할 수도 있을 것이다. 하드웨어 악기를 중심으로 각각의 소리에 존재감을 부여하는 방식을 통해, ACIDWORK의 프로덕션은 자기만의 에너지를 갖는다.

이 7곡의 ‘Pure Elements’는 그가 사용한 하드웨어 악기로부터 탄생했다. RS7000 그루브박스, JV-1080 사운드 모듈, SH-101와 Alpha Juno-1 신시사이저 등은 시대를 상징하는 악기인 동시에 장르 사운드의 핵심으로 이용되곤 했다. ACIDWORK는 이런 댄스 음악의 표준이라 부를만한 악기들을 때로 클리셰 그대로, 때로 실험적으로 활용하며 독창적 패턴과 소리를 찾았다. 그렇게 정수에 가까운 악기로부터 순수한 것을 만들었다. 순수하다는 것은 결국 다른 것이 섞이지 않았다는 말이고, 역설적으로 ACIDWORK는 그의 표현에 따르면 “섞어서 재미있게” 그런 지점에 도달했다.

예컨대 악기 이름 자체가 제목이 된 ‘DRUM-X’에 쓰인 Pearl Drum-X 모듈은 곡의 드럼과 아무 관계가 없다. SH-101의 실시간 베이스라인 컨트롤, RS7000에서 발견한 패드나 코드 소스는 익숙한 듯 익숙하지 않고, 단순한 가운데 은근히 규칙을 흔드는 쾌감을 준다. 트랜시한 아르페지오가 디트로이트 식으로 강하게 컴프레스된 킥과 만나고(‘Misty Morning’), ‘아웃트로’라고 양보하지 않는 강력하고 무거운 서브가 등장한다(‘Over’). 그렇게 [Pure Elements…] EP엔 기존 댄스 음악의 에너지와 더불어 흔치 않은 방식으로 가공 및 조합한 소리를 듣는 즐거움이 있다.

ACIDWORK는 2015년경 프로듀싱을 시작해, 서울의 음악 신에서 다양한 모습으로 활동해온 프로듀서다. [Pure Elements…]는 그의 데뷔 EP지만, 한편 자신의 아카이브 일부를 공개하며 새로운 시작을 알리는 음반이기도 하다. 그의 음악적 ‘Pure Elements’가 하드웨어 악기와 그 재해석에 기인한다면, 선별의 관점에서 이 EP를 ACIDWORK의 여러 데모 중 ‘Pure Elements’라 구분할 수도 있을 것이다. 레이블 WALLS AND PALS의 출발과 함께, [Pure Elements…]는 현재 ACIDWORK의 시선이 어디 머무르는지 보여주는 좋은 단서가 된다.

It’s no surprise that virtue of sound can be achieved when you drive yourself into a limited zone and try to get the best out of what you have. It could be said that it’s a method to get the ‘maximum sound’ out from a minimal setup. Using hardware instruments as his main tools, ACIDWORK empowers presence into each sound segment to create its own energy in the context.

These 7 ‘Pure Elements’ were extracted from his hardware instruments. Instruments like the RS7000 groovebox, JV-1080 sound module, SH-101 and Alpha Juno-1 synthesizer fairly represent a certain era and have been used as production gears that establish the core of genre sounds. ACIDWORK created original sounds and patterns utilizing such standard dance music instruments, as a cliché at times, sometimes more experimentally. That is to say, he created his ‘Pure’ elements with the instruments of the essence. Being pure means there are no additives but it’s interesting that ACIDWORK, reached that certain point by “mixing and messing around” sort of way.

For instance, The Pearl Drum-X module used in the song ‘DRUM-X’ named by the instrument itself, has no relation with the drum source used in the track. The real time bassline control of SH-101 and the chords or pads from RS7000 sounds familiar yet novel, simple but also provides a sense of euphoria by stealthily twisting the rules. Trancey arpeggio meets up with a heavily compressed Detroit style kick drum(‘Misty Morning’) and an unyielding powerful sub appears unexpectedly at the outro(‘Over’). To sum up, [Pure Elements…] EP provides all the joyful factors, energetic dance music vibes combined with uniquely manipulated sounds and patterns.

ACIDWORK started producing in around 2015 and have been active in Seoul’s music scene as a producer. [Pure Elements…] is a debut EP, but also an album that announces a new beginning for the artist releasing selective tracks from his archive. Considering that his musical purity comes from the hardware instruments and their reinterpretation, this EP would be regarded as the ‘Pure Elements’ among many of his demos. Along with the start of the label WALLS AND PALS, [Pure Elements…] shows the current vision of ACIDWORK.
