I'm a little fuzzy, are Wasteland and its sequels basically like, unofficial Fallout spinoffs? or are they their own thing and just happen to reference Fallout stuff a lot?

brian fargo produced both. fallout 1 would have been wasteland 2 if they could have secured the ip. there are characters and factions in fallout who simply walked here from wasteland, and obvious stand-ins.

wasteland 2 and 3 are, unavoidably, responses to bethesda's fallout, and there are places where this is subtext.

fallout 1 and wasteland 3 build on shared events in las vegas because they are both sequels to wasteland 1

the ranger monument in fnv is a metaphor for wasteland being buried by a derivative brand that did not appreciate or preserve its values
