𝐌𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐀 𝐈𝐍𝐅𝐋𝐔𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐒

rules: list 10 movies/shows/music/books that help you get into the proper mindset for your character ! 

1. This iconic Quick.silver screen from Apocalypse

Let me tell you guys a little story. It’s 2018 and this image of a character pops in my head. He’s way too tall, gigantic levels of tall, and muscular with chin-length hair and piercing eyes. He’s wearing a leather jacket, has drumming sticks in his hands, and he is listening to some music. But then he slows down time in various ways. The music in his ears and his drumming sticks are on beat but the bird flying by him moves turtle levels slow. To any passerby he’d look like he teleported. He also had this sidekick ( who turned out to be Aurora —  but that’s a story for another day )

This started somewhat after I watched this scene. I always imagined that Quicksilver slowed down time here. I liked this idea because you know the actual momentum could not just harm anyone he touches but destroy everything around him. So, you can credit this scene as the first inspiration for Augustus Wang. It was a few weeks after this scene that my boy was born in my head and I could just see him fully. 

Note: I do not support this gross whitewashing of the character. I just liked this one scene. I don’t care about his portrayal. 

2. This Face Claim Interview 

Face claim time. Now, I just told you about this image in my head. He was very vivid. More vivid than any other character I ever conjured up in my twisted little head. He also had very specific mannerisms. Mischievous and piercing eyes, an insolent smirk, this know-it-all look that screamed overconfidence, and a laid-back demeanour. So laid back, that you’d see his very large form sprawled on some sofa with a drumming stick on his chest and a book covering his face. 

Then I saw this guy and this interview and I knew in my cold little heart that he was meant to play my darling boy. You need a chaotic handsome asshole to play a chaotic handsome asshole. It still baffles me how I found a second ( first was actor lee hyun jae ) who looked exactly how I pictured the boy in my head. And, I mean exact. They’re even the same height. So, yes, this interview is him to a T. Look at how tall, chaotic, and pretty he is !  

3. Cage The Elephant - Tok.yo Smoke

This song has his vibes to a T. His laid-back energy mixed with his wit is pretty apparent in this song. 

4. Kafka On The Shore - Haruki Murakami 

This magical realism mixed with music being a powerful force makes this book very Augustus-esque. It’s also the book he gave Aurora when they first started becoming friends and it was his first time giving anyone his favorite copy of a book. They would also meet up to read it together. So, this book means a lot to him. It’s his favorite book of all time. So, whenever I even see the cover of this book I’m reminded of Augustus. 

5. His Face Claim Drumming

This man is Augustus Alexander Wang and you cannot tell me otherwise. He’s so beautiful it physically hurts me watching him. 

6. Kas.hmir - Led Zepp.elin

This song makes me think of him. Zeppelin are also his all time favourite band. Yes, he’s basic.  

7. Dashboard Prophets - All You Want

This band has such an Augustus musical and lyrical vibe. I wish they were on Spotify. They’re is also one of his favourite bands. 

8. And.y Black - My Way

These lyrics are very much him. However, this more fun yet badass version fits Augustus more. 

9. KoF Themes - Esa.ka?  

This is my Augustus power play theme song. Like, you know how every character in games and movies has this specific theme when they use their powers ? This is his. 

10. Guar.dians of The Gal.axy Movies

Because I always saw him traveling the multiverses and having adventures with Aurora and mayhaps Jack a hundred or two hundred years down the line.

  “ thank you, thank you, ”  a dramatic bow, more like the end of a performance than a game.  “ . . . and sorry— that I made a timeline where ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks Do Shakespeare’ is a thing. that’s the worst butterfly effect that ever could have happened. ­”  a bit dramatic of a claim, but those chipmunks were menaces to the ears of all.   he regards gus’ request with a look of amused surprise, brows quirked at him.  “ yeah, I could do that… but why would you want me to? I’d drag you all over the court even more than I am now. ”  he’s just messing with gus; that’s just the way it is in the court, smarmily trash-talking with confidence while you dribble the ball tauntingly in front of the other. only the strongest can survive in the harsh world of sports !!!  …  and yet, his tune completely changes from swagger to a betrayed sulk, when gus snatches the ball from his hands.  “ hey. I wanted to try that thing where you spin the ball with your hands… ”  oh, how quickly the tables turn… now he makes his own request, ever the demanding husband/malewife that he is — he demands to be entertained !  “ you better do a cool slam dunk before we leave, or I’ll never forgive you. like ‘michael jordan in space jam’ cool. ”  their ‘marriage’ is once again threatened by the pettiest of things.    but his eyes now hold the familiar sheen of curiosity, always eager to learn more about people — and gus is especially interesting !  “ hey, did you play any sports growing up? ”  he really did want to know, but also, he was hoping gus was lulled into a false sense of security by his friendly tone; he makes a sudden SWIPE for the ball. SUPRISE ATTACK !

  He  found  the  notion  of  the  cursed  timeline  far  more  comic  than  upsetting.  Unfortunately,  Augustus  didn’t  share  Tida’s  abhorrence  for  Alvin,  Theodore,  and  Simon.   “  Imagine  that  squeaky  voice  doing  the   ‘  to  be,  or  not  be  ’   soliloquy  from  the  nunnery  scene.  Damn,  now  I  wanna  hear  it.  Where’s  Aana  when  you  actually  want  to  hear  her  bad  voice  impressions  ? ”   A  good  question,  but  one  he  didn’t  care  to  seek  an  answer  for.

  Augustus  seemed  far  more  occupied  with  Tida’s  gloating.  He  arched  his  eyebrows  half-amused  and  half-challengingly  as  he  dribbled  the  basketball.   “  Hey,  Tee,  why  don’t  you  wait  till  it’s  sundown  ?   Then  you  can  gloat  in  the  dark.  ”   He  made  a  face  as  soon  as  he  said  the  pun  as  if  he  tasted  something  sour.  Damn  Aurora’s  influence  had  hexed  them  all  into  punning  !

  “  Come  on,  I’m  the  space-time  continuum  warping  guy,  duh  ! ”   he  grinned  brightly.    “  I  think  I  can  handle  whatever  you  throw  at  me.  Then,  maybe,  I’ll  get  the  chance  to  power  play  and  speed  right  past  you.  ”   Well,  he  sounded  cheeky.  

  The  topic  changed  though  and  Augustus  was  content  to  shift  with  it.   “  A  little.  I  didn’t  play  any  sports  when  I  was  a  kid,  but  then  I  hit  my  growth  spurt  and  got  these  magnificent  wide  shoulders.  Suddenly,  everybody  wanted  me  to  play  sports.  I  obliged.  That  was  around  the  time  I  knew  your  ex-girlfriend.  She  was  cool,  almost  like  an  older  sister.  ”   

   He  couldn’t  help  but  laugh  when  Tida  swiped  the  ball.   “  What  about  you  ?  I  think  you  were  definitely  a  champ,   ”   he  commented,  adoringly.   “  You’re  really  good  at  this  sports  stuff.  It’s  fascinating  watching  your  magnificent  hair  floof  bounce  while  you  play.  ”

  “  Chiang  makes  the  shot  and  the  crowd  goes  wild  !   Nature  is  healing.  Vampires  have  decided  to  not  be  assholes  anymore  and  a  chipmunk  has  written  the  next  Hamlet  ! ”   The  enthusiasm  colouring  his  tone  was  accompanied  by  a  round  of  applause  for  Tida.  Amusement  glinted  in  those  piercing  eyes  as  he  covered  the  distance  between  them  in  two  short  steps.   “  Shit,  Tee,  I  knew  you  can  run  fast  but  you  just  completely  quicksilvered  your  way  past  me  and  to  the  hoop.  ”

   He  snared  the  basketball  from  Tida’s  grasp,   “  this  is  a  fun  training  session.  Can  you  please  make  a  basketball  out  of  water  though  ?  I  think  we’ll  still  be  able  to  play.  I’m  the  space-time  continuum  guy,  duh.  ”

  The  stillness  of  the  crawling  night  didn’t  bother  him.  Nor  that  the  needles  of  the  clock  were  waltzing  into  the  morning  hours.  He  knew  people  ought  to  be  asleep  at  three  in  the  morning.  But  no  one  in  the  household  could  let  Augustus  feel  as  if  he  were  alone  in  the  grand  scheme  of  things.  Now,  what  was  it  this  time  ?    

  He  didn’t  even  flinch  when  his  door  was  thrown  open,  seemingly  content  in  being  sprawled  across  his  king-size  bed.   “  The  purple  one,  ”   his  raspy  drawl  contrasted  Tida’s  animated  dialogue.   “  So,  I  can  beat  you  up  silly  with  my  fabulous  red  bag.  ”   There  it  was  !    His   signature  mischief  colored  his  tone.

  “  No,  but  I  think  I’d  be  the  green  one,  ”   he  seemed  serious  now  as  he  tucked  his  arms  underneath  the  back  of  his  head.  It  was  an  imperative  question  after  all   !   “  He  seems  the  smartest.  And  as  well  know,  I’m  the  smartest  one.  ”

   it's  commitment,  it's  devotion,  it  goes  often  without  saying,  but  is  felt  nonetheless.  it's  accepting  that  you  would  travel  to  hell  and  back  for  them  if  they  asked  and  knowing  that  they  would  do  the  same  for  you.  it's  an  old  ache,  long  after  they've  burrowed  deep  into  your  chest  and  settled  there  like  a  weight-  grounding,  an  anchor  point.  even  when  you're  apart,  you  can  still  feel  the  shape  of  them,  it's  like  phantom  pain.  neither  of  you  can  help  but  succumb  to  the  other's  gravity,  yet  neither  of  you  fear  the  collision.  it  means  that  you  trust  them,  that  they  make  you  feel  safe,  that  they  feel  like  home.

💢  —  What  are  some  habits  they  have  that  will  take  getting  used  to  ?

Though  his  wittiness  is  often  seen  as  attractive,  his  wise-cracking,  know-it-all  responses  can  get  annoying.  He  always  has  something  funny  or  sarcastic  to  say.  He  also  has  a  habit  of  pushing  most  people  away.  Another,  smaller  habit  that  can  be  irksome  is  his  habit  to  drum  on  any  surface  with  anything.  It  can  be  anything  from  using  pencils  or  his  fingers  on  a  table  to  using  spoons  on  a  tray.

🍧  —  Do  they  still  have  any  objects  from  their  childhood  ?  What  significance  does  it  have  to  them  ?   What  would  their  reaction  be  if  they  lost  it  ?

This  is  so  cute,  but  it  was  the  first  album  he  ever  owned,  Led  Zeppelin  IV.  It  was  then  he  knew  he  wanted  to  do  music  and  by  high  school,  he  played  three  instruments  and  wrote  many  songs.  It’s  also  something  that  connects  him  to  his  dad  as  the  two  bonded  over  rock  music.

A  close  second  is  an  astronomy  book  for  kids  he  had  picked  up.  It’s  very  ‘loved’  and  you  can  tell  from  its  bent  spine  and  pages  that  are  worn  from  reading.

🍃  —  Do  they  enjoy  being  in  nature  ?    What  is  their  favourite  outdoor  activity  ?

I  think  he  does,  especially  in  gardens  and  parks.  He  also  loves  to  hike  and  he  goes  for  a  run  whenever  he  can.  He  also  spends  a  lot  of  time  reading  outdoors.  His  favourite  outdoor  activity  would  be  stargazing  though.  He  always  has  these  stargazing  sessions  with  his  best  friend  Aurora  and  they  talk  about  anything  but  mostly  it’s  about  space,  philosophy,  and  politics.

🎭  —  Do  they  act  differently  around  certain  people  ?   What's  different  between  the  way  they  act  around  friends,  family,  strangers,  etc.  ?

He  does,  but  it’s  not  on  purpose.  He  is  definitely  a  lot  more  affectionate  with  his  people:  Aurora,  and  Jack,  his  sister  Cassie,  and  Tida  and  Taewon.  Augustus  isn’t  a  touchy  person,  if  you  touch  him  he  doesn’t  mind  but  he  doesn’t  actively  go  around  touching  people.

With  his  people,  he  is  very  physically  affectionate  like  he’d  scoot  closer  and  just  somehow  be  touching  them.  He  seeks  their  touch  actively.  He  is  also  a  more  active  listener,  softer,  more  compassionate,  and  caring  with  these  people.  It’s  very  different  from  how  he  interacts  with  others.  Usually,  he  is  indifferent  and  funny  with  other  people.  Though  he  is  an  extrovert,  you  can  tell  he  keeps  a  barrier  with  others  that  he  doesn’t  with  his  people.

He  is  also  playfully  mean  to  Jack  and  Aurora,  it’s  something  natural.  It’s  how  they  express  love  with  one  another.  He  is  also  more  childish  with  them.

With  Aurora  who  is  his  best  friend  and  divine  counterpart,  he  shares  a  very  inherently  friendship-based  connection  that  has  the  two  completely  on  the  same  wavelength  at  all  times.  They  have  the  same  humor,  they  understand  each  other’s  ideas,  and  they  just  know  how  the  other  feels  without  a  word.  So,  the  two  are  like  Tweedle-Dee  and  Tweedle-Dum.

🎀  —  How  would  they  fit  into  other  worlds  /  aus  ?    what  aus  would  you  like  to  try  out  ?   What  fictional  world  would  they  fit  /  not  fit  into  ?

I  don’t  have  any  aus  for  my  characters  to  be  honest.  And  he  can  fit  into  any  fictional  world  because  he  can  travel  through  time  and  universes.  I  also  have  a  side-plot  where  he  travels  across  universes  with  Jack  and  Aurora.

❤️    —  Their  love  languages  ?

Okay,  so  from  what  I  can  tell  from  how  he  is  in  the  relationships  that  mean  most  to  him,  the  most  prominent  is  spending  quality  time.  He’d  give  you  his  full  undivided  attention  if  he  cares  about  you.  The  more  subtle  and  saved  only  for  the  chosen  few  are  gift-giving  and  acts  of  service.

He  has  this  tendency  to  get  the  person  he  loves  things  he’d  think  they’d  want.  They  are  personalized  gifts  he  spent  a  lot  of  time  on  and  they  convey  his  emotions  but  he  passes  it  off  as  something  he  bought  on  impulse.  It  came  from  his  dad  who  gave  him  albums  because  of  their  connection.  So,  for  example,  he’d  get  Tida  something  shark-themed  or  an  album  he’d  think  Tida  would  like.  He  gets  Jack  car-related  things  or  some  item  Jack  needs  but  doesn’t  say.  He  gets  Aurora  books  and  they  read  them  at  the  same  time  or  music  boxes  or  anything  that  reminds  him  of  her.  When  they  were  dating,  he’d  give  Aurora  jewelry  items  or  things  that  expressed  emotions  better  than  words.

Augustus  doesn’t  really  go  out  of  his  way  to  do  anything  for  anyone,  so  if  he  makes  you  food  or  does  anything  to  help  you  out,  he  loves  you.  And,  he  does  love  the  people  I  mentioned.  However,  he  gets  shy  about  it  and  doesn’t  even  take  credit  for  them.

💚  —  What  things  make  your  oc  feel  comforted  ?   Hugs,  kisses,  food  ?

He  likes  it  when  the  people  he  loves  would  sit  next  to  him  in  silence  or  make  a  joke.  It’s  this  assurance  that  he  isn’t  alone.  He  only  speaks  his  emotions  with  Aurora  and  Jack,  but  he  does  try  and  express  how  he’s  feeling  in  more  vague  ways  to  Tida.  Hugs  and  physical  affection  are  very  appreciated.  He  just  wants  to  feel  connected.
