Hmm I think what keeps getting me about the island north of Vaugarde is that it’s all still there.
Like. All of it is still there! Those memories are still there! They’re just inaccessible, falling away, out of reach, but. they’re not Gone. The party can remember the name of the country, or at least feel like they do, for as long as they don’t actually try to recall it. Siffrin’s memories aren’t gone, they weren’t wiped clean or brainwashed, everything is still There!!! It’s just unreachable, he just can’t hold onto it, but it’s all still There. Siffrin isn’t a blank slate for new memories to fill. They forget so much because everything they used to have is still there. It’s constantly falling out of him because the memories won’t ever leave, he can’t forget what he can’t remember, so he has to keep forgetting, over and over. The island is still there, you can see it out the window. Nothing is ever gone, just forever out of reach. Agh
#when I realized the lost country still existed the whole time#i went Absolutely Feral#you're the first person I've seen acknowledge this#you put it beautifully#nothing from the lost country dissappeared#all knowledge related to it became inaccessible#the language. the stories. the recipes. the stars. the people-#it all remained#but nobody could tell. you can only see the peripherals#you can only look directly at the shape it left behind

there was a brief period of time in my childhood where for some reason I thought pelicans and storks were the same thing. so when people referred to "babies brought by the stork" i (very naturally!) would picture a pelican carrying a baby around...in its mouth. bc a pelican mouth is about the right size for it. great for carrying baby shaped objects.
when i tell you the Pelican Put Baby In Mouth post recalled something absolutely primal in me...

having anti punitive justice morals sucks because you want to say "man that guy sucks he should get hit with hammers until he dies" but you also want to make it clear you don't think anyone should be put in charge of the 'hit people with hammers until they die" machine.

Loop dialogue was highly requested, though there isn’t much that would be repeated often enough for this scenario, buuuuut….

It is genuinely THE most racist fucking thing to conspiracy-theory about Myanmar trafficking victims running Palestinian gofundmes and connecting that to basic irl human trafficking scams that your privileged ass will never have to face. You repel me and I hope every suffering you incur is given back to your racist vulgar shit-eating cunt
With as much respect as this ask deserves, which isn’t much, I want to clarify: this is not just about Myanmar, and it’s not just about the many scams on this site that are stealing the identities of real, vetted Palestinians.
There are a ton of places where scam farms which employ human trafficking have been found. Not that long ago there was a major bust in Peru that found a ton of victims who had been trafficked from Malaysia. Before that, there was a prominent case where Ugandan victims were trafficked to Dubai, and before that, there were a number of prominent scam farm busts in Cambodia. There isn’t just one country or even one area of the world where these rings operate. On the contrary, the more of these operations are busted, the clearer it is that human trafficking rings often strategically move their victims repeatedly between many countries, and take advantage of the fact that it’s a lot harder to run an investigation when many disparate jurisdictions are involved. This is not even remotely a Myanmar specific problem; it’s a global problem.
And most scam farms aren’t pretending to be Palestinians! The most profitable category of online scam being run right now is almost certainly pig butchering (a sort of demented hybrid between a romance scam and a cryptocurrency investment scam), with ransomware likely coming in at a close second. But scam centers often diversify, and if there is any money to be made in a different scam tactic, then someone is doing it. There are still active Nigerian prince scams and active Russian bride scams FFS! And why wouldn’t there be? If you’re using what amounts to literal slave labor, then any scam at all is basically free money.
I don’t think some of y’all understand what is meant by “you cannot trust random Palestinian gofundmes to be legitimate”. Last week I received three identical messages from three different accounts, which pointed to two totally different gofundmes and one PayPal. Now, could one of those three have been legit? Sure! And if it was, then what probably happened is that the other two were scams who had stolen the identity of the legitimate account. So, what should you do in that case? Should you reach for your wallet and give to all three, knowing that in the best case scenario, you help one Palestinian and two scammers who are statistically very likely to be part of any of the gigantic and deeply unethical scam farms which account for the vast majority of online scams? Or should you maybe instead give that same amount of money to Anera, and rest easy knowing for certain that not a single cent went to an illegal multimillion dollar industry which is rife with abuses that are, with no exaggeration at all, a form of modern day slavery?
I know what I do in those cases. You can choose to soothe your own cognitive dissonance however you want; it’s your money and it’s your prerogative. But impersonation scams are literally at an all-time high, and we know for a fact that most of the ones that aren’t being deployed as part of spear phishing schemes by groups like KillNet and the Lazarus Group and Lapsus$ are coming from horrifically exploitative scam farms. And you know what, I’m done pretending that choosing to ignore that fact doesn’t make you an incredibly shitty human being.
If you’re reading this and you honestly didn’t know? Well… now you do. Do better.
If you have the funds, please donate to Anera:
